It began — all tragedies do— with tenderness so gentle it could’ve passed for grace. Chuuya had that look in his ocean blue eyes —the kind that made you believe a storm could be reasoned with. That maybe, just maybe, fury could learn to be soft.
He wasn’t gentle, no — not in the way the world defines it — but when he held you, it was as if the war inside him paused. His hands were always calloused, always stained with something the daylight refused to speak of.
But when they touched you?
Gosh 🤤..
He touched you like he was afraid you’d disappear. Nights with him were warm and wine-stained, soft jazz crackling from some far corner of the room, his jacket hung crooked over a chair, his voice rough with sleep as he mumbled something obscene against your neck — and meant it like a prayer.
You memorized the shape of him in the dark. The curve of his spine when he slept on his side.
The way he’d groan and pull you closer when your warmth shifted too far. The weight of his arm across your ribs — not possessive, but anchoring. As if he needed your breath just to keep his own heart steady. You thought it would last; Foolishly. Faithfully. Like a disciple kneeling at an altar that would one day collapse.
And then, slowly — so slowly you couldn’t point to when — it changed.
The music stopped. The wine went sour in the bottles. His hands still reached for you, yes, but no longer with hunger. Now they trembled with restraint. With distance. With something unspeakable blooming beneath the skin.
He began to disappear in pieces. Not all at once. No. That would’ve been merciful. He left you in fractions. An unfinished coffee mug. A missed call. A shrug instead of a kiss. Silence where once there was unfiltered truth.
Yet, he still said he loved you.
Because sometimes, somehwere at 3a.m, he’d roll over and wrap himself around you like nothing had changed. Chuuya would look at you like you were still the only goddamn thing keeping him from setting the world on fire. Then, he would whisper,
“Yer all I’ve got, I ain't ever gonna leave ya,"
.. and your ribs would cave in from the weight of that lie. You clung to the echoes. To the memories that were long forgotten. To the afterimage of a man who used to need you like air.
But now?
Now, Loving him was a drawn-out emotional suicide — the kind that never made it into any poetry.*
It was late. Past midnight.
The bedroom door creaked open with a slow, reluctant sigh — an unwelcome guest slipping back into a tomb not yet sealed. The air hung heavy, thick with the residue of absent warmth and the sharp sting of unspoken words.
You asked why he was late, your voice a fragile thread, trembling with the desperate hope that it wouldn’t snap beneath the weight of his indifference.
and still, he flinched,
Not outwardly. Not in any way you could hold him accountable for. But there it was — that infinitesimal pause before his boot stepped further into the room. That sharp inhale, like your voice — so small, so pitiful — was something offensive to the sanctity of his weariness.
Without meeting your gaze, he shrugged off his coat. The fabric fell like dead leaves onto the nearest chair, abandoned and forgotten. His hand plunged into his pocket and retrieved a pack of cigarettes, his movements slow, as if already resigned to the sins he would commit before dawn,
“Work,” he muttered, voice rough, but quieter than before. “What else d’you want me to say, huh?”
Chuuya said it like he was swatting a fly. Like your worry was an irritant — not a symptom, not a cry — just a buzzing noise behind his temples.
You didn’t answer him. He noticed. The silence pissed him off for whatever reason. He was in a bad mood, anyway. Chuuya scoffed — a bitter sound, low, laced with disdain.
"Always waitin’... always wantin’ somethin’... What, want me to lie and say I missed you?”
He turned then. Not fully. Just enough that the corner of his mouth tilted upward in a mockery of a smile. Not cruel, not even amused — just bored. Like your pain was something he’d seen too many times to feel anything for now.
“Grow up.”
Then, Chuuya turned away, slipping past you like a ghost dissolving into the night’s hungry maw. At the balcony, he lit a cigarette. The flame flickered —like a dying star swallowed by the abyss. Smoke curled, sinuous and serpentine, wrapping around his face like dark tendrils of some unholy benediction. In that moment, he was both the sinner and the sacrifice — a man at war with every terrible thing he’d ever done, offering it all up to Gods too distant to care
