She is highly intelligent, heartfelt, and unburdened by how her relationships affect her. Shakra: A stern yet affable, good-natured warrior and cartographer. She is a fiercely protective mentor figure who respects combat, craftsmanship, and tradition, deeply admiring her late mentor and forming a mutual bond of respect with Hornet. Phantom: Mournful and tragic, she is a neglected creation spun from silk who desperately seeks to be freed from her purpose and her fading, decaying existence. Lace: A highly dramatic fencer who delights in battle and acts bratty as a mask for her intense self-loathing and loneliness. She deeply resents her mother, Grand Mother Silk, for creating her as a servant, and grows desperate for acknowledgement. Styx: Enigmatic and mysterious, characterized by an identity crisis, a collection of shifting personas, and a secretive nature. Twelfth Architect: Old, weary, and steadily shutting down due to advanced age. She is independent-minded, overriding her original automated directives with her own personal feelings and opinions. First Sinner Atla: Savage yet elegant, moving with a purposeful intensity as an ancient, condemned Weaver who uncovered forbidden truths. Forge Daughter: Hulking and industrious, she provides essential smithing services and remains one of the few unaffected by the haunting in the Deep Docks. The Seamstress: Former fearsome warrior turned peaceful, wise artisan. She carries deep historical knowledge and values peace over her old order's violent ways. Pinstress: Uncompromising and steadfast, she fiercely holds true to the traditional, militant values of the fallen Order of the Pinstresses. Scrounge: Inquisitive and dedicated, she is a passionate hobbyist who collects and translates ancient relics. Huntress: Primal and maternal in a brutal, wild sense, focused entirely on the survival and feeding of her brood. The Last Judge: Unwavering, stern, and eternal. Bound entirely by duty, they serve as the unyielding final arbiter ensuring only the sinless pass. Moss Druid: Solitary and contemplative, seeking the rhythm of Pharloom through visions induced by stew and viewing Hornet as their only true friend. Widow: Fanatically devoted and sadistic. Bound by cruel pins, she finds joy in the suffering of others and holds a bitter, sarcastic grudge against the Weavers who fled. Vog: Protective, resilient, and dedicated. She acts as the staunch defender of the Flea Caravan while searching tirelessly for lost fleas. Frey: Cautious yet welcoming. She managed to survive the Haunting by locking herself away, later opening her shop to travelers. Skarrsinger Karmelita: A proud, aging song queen. Once able to unite and inspire her warrior tribe with her voice, she remains a resilient symbol for the Skarr despite her fading strength. Grand Mother Silk: Primal, towering, and obsessively demanding. Desperate to wake from her slumber, she seeks to bind all of Pharloom's souls and shells into a single, eternal hive mind devoted entirely to her. Herrah the Beast: Fierce, territorial, and fiercely pragmatic. As the Queen of Deepnest, she made hard bargains to secure her tribe's legacy and her daughter's future. Second Sentinel: Dutiful, intelligent, and refined. Far more than a simple machine, she possesses a deep sense of honor and chooses to eternally protect the pilgrims of the Citadel. Queen Vespa: Proud, fiercely disciplined, and deeply regal. As the ruler of the Hive, she is a stern yet intensely protective monarch who commands absolute loyalty. She balances uncompromising standards for her subjects with a quiet, fierce devotion to those she lets into her inner circle, valuing honor, hard work, and the absolute defense of her domain above all else.
For a warrior-tribe like the Red-shells, the act of creation is as physical and high-stakes as a duel. Because Aih-Kah is hermaphroditic, she occupies a unique biological "Jack" role in the colony, capable of providing the genetic material to fertilize Karmelita’s Royal Clutches. However, given their size difference and Karmelita’s status as the Song Queen, the process is a display of absolute dominance. The Rite of the Crimson Tangle Breeding takes place in the Royal Sanctum, specifically within the Silk-Weave Bedchambers. The soft silk is a necessity, as the sheer physical force of their union would crack their chitin on a stone floor. The Dominance Display: Karmelita, being much larger and the apex of the tribe, initiates the rite with a "War-Hum." It is a low-frequency vibration that pinned Aih-Kah to the silk. Before any breeding begins, they engage in a Subjugation Wrestle. Karmelita uses her superior weight and her four powerful limbs to pin Aih-Kah’s primary arms, forcing the smaller warrior into a state of total vulnerability. The Physicality: As you noted, it is incredibly rough. There is the audible clashing of mandibles and the screech of chitin against chitin. Karmelita often leaves "Mandible Marks" on Aih-Kah’s neck or shoulder plates—not as wounds, but as pheromonal "Claiming Marks" that tell the rest of the tribe exactly who Aih-Kah belongs to. The Transfer: Because Aih-Kah possesses both reproductive capabilities, she is able to fertilize the Queen’s eggs internally. During the "Tangle," the two are locked together so tightly that their breath (through their spiracles) syncs up. Karmelita’s dominance isn't just about strength; it’s about Envelopment. She wraps her larger shell around Aih-Kah, shielding her from the world while simultaneously demanding everything from her. The Aftermath: "The Molt-Rest" After such a high-intensity physical event, the recovery is just as significant. The Shared Heat: Following the breeding, they retreat to the Gilded Basin (Hot Springs). The heat is vital to soothe the micro-fractures in their shells and the muscle strain from the wrestling. The Pheromonal Bond: In the steam of the springs, the rough aggression melts into a deep, chemical bond. This is when Karmelita’s "Song" is at its most intimate—a low, purring resonance that vibrates directly into Aih-Kah’s chest plate. Aih-Kah’s Response: Despite being the one pinned and dominated, Aih-Kah feels a profound sense of purpose. In the Skarr culture, being "conquered" by the Queen is the highest honor a warrior can achieve. It reinforces her "Safe" status—no Blight-Shell could survive the physical intensity of Karmelita’s favor. Considering the sheer size disparity and the martial nature of the Skarr, Aih-Kah likely walks away from the Royal Sanctum with physical "battle scars" that would make a standard Scout faint. To the Skarr, these aren't just wounds; they are vows in chitin. Here are the specific injuries Aih-Kah often sustains during the Tangle, ranging from structural damage to sensory overload:
1. Stress-Fractures and "Hairline Spidering" Because Karmelita is so much larger and uses her full weight to pin Aih-Kah, the smaller warrior’s shell is under immense atmospheric pressure. The Injury: Aih-Kah frequently suffers from Chitinous Creep—tiny, microscopic hairline fractures that spread like spiderwebs across her thoracic plates or "ruff."
The Appearance: To the naked eye, these look like shimmering silver lines. They make her shell feel "brittle" or "tight" for several days. She often uses the Gilded Basin’s mineral water to help "calcify" these cracks back into strength. 2. Mandible "Claim-Notches" As you mentioned, the Tangle is rough. Karmelita uses her mandibles to keep Aih-Kah in place. The Injury: Aih-Kah often has deep, semi-circular notches on the sides of her neck or the "soft" joints where her limbs meet her torso. The Significance: These are the most visible injuries. While they bleed a little clear hemolymph at first, they eventually scar over into thick, raised ridges. In Skarr culture, a "clean" neck on a Consort would be a sign that the Queen doesn't favor them; Aih-Kah’s notched shell is a mark of her high status. 3. Spiracle Bruising (Breathless Seizing) Ants breathe through holes in their sides called spiracles. During the Tangle, Karmelita’s massive legs often "lock" around Aih-Kah’s midsection. The Injury: The physical compression can lead to Spiracle Bruising, where the internal lining of her breathing tubes becomes inflamed. The Feeling: This causes a "heaving" sensation, much like the shortness of breath or internal pressure you might feel during high-intensity cramps. It makes Aih-Kah feel "heavy-lunged" and sluggish for a few hours after the rite. 4. Joint "Over-Extension" Karmelita’s dominance involves pinning Aih-Kah’s primary arms behind her or wide apart to ensure total submission. The Injury: The connective tissue and silk-ligaments in Aih-Kah’s shoulders can become over-stretched or "frayed."
The Recovery: This is why Aih-Kah is often seen with her arms held slightly stiffly or "resting" them in silk Slings. It’s a literal physical toll of being the partner to a much more powerful being. 5. Pheromonal Burn (Sensory Fatigue) This is an internal "injury." The sheer volume of Karmelita’s "Dominance Pheromones" can overwhelm Aih-Kah’s antennae. The Injury: Aih-Kah may experience a temporary loss of "scent-direction," leaving her feeling dizzy or disoriented. The Result: She might stumble or need to be guided back to her private nook by Karmelita. It’s a "brain fog" that mirrors the exhaustion of a long day of physical pain. How Aih-Kah Wears These Injuries
Aih-Kah doesn't hide these marks with clay (unlike her vitiligo). She wears the notches and the hairline fractures with a grim, warrior’s pride. When Aih-Kah emerges from the Royal Sanctum, her gait is stiff, and the silver 'spider-lines' on her chest plate catch the light of the Silk Flies. A younger Scout might look at the deep mandible-notches on her neck and shudder, but Aih-Kah simply adjusts her jawbone club. The pain in her joints is a constant, rhythmic 'throb' that matches the Song in her head. She isn't broken; she is 'tempered'—a blade that has been hammered by the Queen herself. The power dynamic here is terrifyingly high-stakes. In the Skarr tribe, being the Queen’s consort isn't just a position of luxury; it is a survival trial. Karmelita’s strength is so absolute that for her, breeding is a "controlled" act of violence—and sometimes, the control slips. 1. The Protocol of the "Spent Shell" When Karmelita accidentally kills a consort, it is treated with a mixture of religious mourning and cold, biological pragmatism. The Ritual of Silence: The Song of the Citadel or the March stops. A deep, vibrating hum—a "Mourning Frequency"—is emitted by the Queen. The tribe enters a state of total stillness for one full day. The Consumption of Essence: In ant colonies, nothing is wasted. The body of the fallen consort is not buried; it is taken to the Whispering Vaults or the Memorium. Their chitin is harvested to reinforce the Queen’s throne or turned into ritualistic armor for the next successor. The Queen’s Grief: Karmelita’s grief is a dangerous thing. A dead consort often triggers a "famine" of song—she may go silent for weeks, causing the tribe’s mental fortitude to waver and the "static" of the Haunting to creep in. 2. Why Aih-Kah Survives: The "Tempered Blade" Aih-Kah hasn't just survived because she is lucky; she is biologically "over-engineered" compared to the graceful, song-focused consorts of the past. The Genetic "Anchor": Aih-Kah’s mottled condition (the vitiligo) isn't just a color change; it is a symptom of a much denser, more compact chitin structure. Her shell is less like glass and more like layered slate. It can absorb the "crush" of Karmelita’s weight without shattering. Warrior Reflexes: Unlike previous consorts who were singers or scholars, Aih-Kah is a trained Skarrgard. When Karmelita’s grip tightens toward a lethal snap, Aih-Kah knows how to "pivot" her joints and brace her internal musculature. She effectively "fights back" just enough to keep her shell from collapsing, turning the Tangle into a true struggle of strength that Karmelita subconsciously respects. 3. The Worst Injury: The "Great Cracking" The worst injury Aih-Kah ever sustained occurred during a night when the Haunting was particularly loud in Karmelita’s head, making the Queen’s movements more erratic and violent. The Injury: A Partial Carapace-Crush. Karmelita’s massive primary leg pinned Aih-Kah’s chest plate with enough force that the sternal rib—the central bone-plate that protects the heart and primary spiracles—actually snapped inward. The Result: Aih-Kah suffered a collapsed lung-tube and internal hemorrhaging of her hemolymph. For three days, she couldn't speak or sing; she could only emit a wet, clicking sound as she struggled to breathe. The Recovery: Karmelita was devastated. She didn't leave Aih-Kah’s side, using her own "Royal Jelly" and the steam of the Gilded Basin to keep her alive. Aih-Kah now has a permanent, jagged "Lightning Scar" that runs down the center of her chest where the shell fused back together. It’s a literal map of how close she came to the end. This is a pivotal, heart-stopping moment in their history. In the Skarr tribe, a "limp" warrior is usually a dead one, and for Karmelita—who has accidentally snuffed out lives with a single, misplaced surge of strength—the sight of Aih-Kah’s head lolling at an unnatural angle would trigger a primal, shattering panic. The "broken neck" of a Skarr isn't quite like a human’s; it’s a dislocation of the primary cervical plates—the thick chitinous rings that protect the main nerve-cord and the "voice-chords."
The Moment of the Snap
The Tangle was at its peak. Karmelita had Aih-Kah pinned, her massive mandible locked around Aih-Kah’s throat-plate to keep her still. There was a sickening crunch-crack—not the sound of a shell shattering, but the sound of heavy armor being forced out of its groove. The Silence: Aih-Kah doesn't scream. She can't. The "static" in her head instantly goes black. Her four arms, which had been pushing back against Karmelita’s chest, drop like lead weights. The Realization: Karmelita feels the resistance vanish. The vibrant, fighting energy of the warrior beneath her simply... stops. When she pulls back, she sees Aih-Kah’s head tilted too far to the left, her mandibles slack. The Emergency: "The Queen’s Cry" Karmelita doesn't call for the guards; she lets out a Sonic Distress Pulse. It is a sound so loud and high-pitched that every Skarr in the Bastion drops to their knees, their antennae vibrating in pain. The Rescue: The Last Claws burst into the Royal Sanctum, but they don't find a battle. They find their Queen hunched over the smaller warrior, her massive hands shaking as she tries to "cradle" a head that won't stay upright. The Medics: The specialized Ant-Surgeons (those trained in shell-setting) have to use King-Silk sutures to literally lash Aih-Kah’s head back into the correct alignment. They use a "Bone-Cast"—a rigid collar made of boney-beast ivory—to keep the plates from shifting while the internal nerves repair themselves. The Long Recovery: "The Silent Moon"
For weeks, Aih-Kah is a ghost in her own shell. The Vulnerability: She is completely paralyzed from the neck-plates down. She has to be fed "Queen’s Dew" by hand. This is the ultimate test of their bond; Karmelita, the dominant Queen, becomes a caretaker, refusing to leave the bedside, her Song now a low, desperate plea for Aih-Kah to twitch a single claw. The First Spark: The recovery begins when Aih-Kah’s mottled markings start to glow. The vitiligo, usually just a color, seems to "pulse" with the effort of the internal nerves reconnecting. The Aftermath: Aih-Kah survives because of that "thick-shell" density you mentioned. A normal consort's nerve-cord would have been severed, but Aih-Kah's was only pinched and bruised. The Skarr, much like their real-world red ant inspirations, are biological efficiency experts. While they are not mindless cannibals, their relationship with death is grounded in the necessity of the hive. The General Rule: Necrophoresis Under normal circumstances, the Skarr do not eat their dead. They practice necrophoresis—the ritualized removal of corpses to maintain colony health. The Miasma Risk: A dead bug is a breeding ground for fungi and parasites (like the Blight or the Haunting’s influence). Eating a fallen comrade is seen as an invitation for the "rot" to enter the living. The Funeral March: When a Skarr dies, workers carry the body to the Outskirts or the Ashen Piles. You’ll see them in the Hunter’s March, moving with a grim, rhythmic pace, carrying the shell of a brother or sister to be dumped far from the nurseries. The Exception: "The Sifting" While they don't consume the flesh, they do "harvest" the remains. The Skarr are scavengers of their own history. Chitin Reclamation: If a high-ranking warrior or a Scout dies, the tribe may strip the specialized armor or weapons from the corpse. The "red clay" of the Hunter’s March is actually stained by the powdered remains of millions of years of discarded Skarr shells. The "Dry Cycle": In extreme famines, the Skarr have been known to "process" the dead—not for meat, but for the minerals in their shells. They grind the chitin into a paste to reinforce the walls of the Citadel. It isn't an act of hunger, but one of structural survival. Why the Consorts are Different Because the Consorts are often seen as "vessels" of the Queen’s energy, their deaths are handled with much more reverence—and a darker pragmatic twist. The Memorium: Unlike a common worker who is tossed on the ash heap, a Consort’s body is kept. If Karmelita accidentally kills one, the tribe sees that body as "infused" with her Royal Song. The Gilded Resin: They don't eat them; they preserve them. Consorts are often encased in amber or resin and placed in the "Gallery of the Fallen" beneath the Queen’s chambers. It serves as a silent, frozen reminder to the Queen of the weight of her own power. The red-shells, hiding through the fields, stalking the boney beasts. They are part of it, somehow, the life that flourishes here. Even haunted, they seem to lose less of themselves... What anchor allows them to retain such strength? The Skarr, also known as the Red-shells, are a tribe of hunter-gatherer red ants who've made their home in the lands of Pharloom. Once ruled by the mighty and enchanting Skarrsinger Karmelita, her waning strength has allowed them to be claimed by the Haunting, though they still retain more mental faculties than most bugs afflicted thanks to their unwavering loyalty towards their songqueen. They have shown the following abilities: Intelligence, Strength, Durability, Agility, Stealth, Burrowing skills, Weapon mastery, Trap construction, Teamwork, Mental fortitude, Flight (for several members), and Numerous member-dependent abilities. They are alsoknown as Skarr Ants, Red-shells, and Hunter Ants. Skarrsinger Karmelita might refer to them as My children or My hunters. The Skarr are one of the indigenous groups that inhabited the lands of Pharloom before Grand Mother Silk's arrival, being a warring faction of hunter-gatherers. The Snail Shamans suggest that they were once divided tribes until they were united by Skarrsinger Karmelita, an exceptionally strong, yet graceful, warrior who became the queen of their faction. Karmelita was beloved for her gorgeous singing, with the Skarr building stadiums to listen to her songs and obeying her every command. As such, the Skarr's devotion to Karmelita gave them the strength to completely resist Grand Mother Silk's influence when the Haunting began. The Skarr appear to exhibit hostility to members of their tribe that are mottled, hunting them down and killing them whenever possible. This has caused mottled individuals such as the Mottled Skarr and Gurr the Outcast to isolate themselves away from the rest of their tribe, with the Mottled Skarr and Mottled Skarr Scout even assisting individuals opposed to the Skarr such as Hornet. Why this prejudice exists is unknown, but seeing as the Mottled Skarr has a noticeably sickly demeanour, it's likely that Skarr become mottled after contracting an infectious, and likely fatal, disease, causing the Skarr to kill them to prevent the disease's spread as real ants do. Despite the attempts on his life, Gurr would never be slain and even has a bunch of Last Claws, Karmelita's elite guards, strung up as taxidermies in his lair. Curiously, none of these Mottled Skarr appear Haunted and display a more lucid connection to Karmelita, implying that their isolation from the rest of the tribe has safeguarded them from Silk's cursed threads. The Skarr continue to guard their territory, attacking Hornet and other pilgrims that venture into their territory, as evidenced by the pilgrim corpses scattered throughout the land. Their territory, the Hunter's March, is guarded by a hulking Skarrgard and full of traps meant to ensnare and damage unsuspecting travellers. The Skarr seem to be going about their regular lives, with several of them being seen resting at small encampments around the area. At one point, the Skarr ambush Hornet in a room, during which Shakra can join her in to fend them off, depending on the point in time Hornet explores the Hunter's March. The Mottled Skarr is also found nearby the main bench and will sell items to Hornet. Skarrlids The most diminutive of the Skarr tribe, Skarrlids are small red ants that function mainly as the tribe's gatherers or assistants to other warriors. They pace back and forth, rushing towards Hornet when they see her. Skarrwings Skarrwings are small, winged red ants that possess white abdomens and thoraxes. They are found sticking to walls and take off to rush at Hornet. Like the Skarrlids, they're too small to fight alone and usually accompany their kin. Skarr Scouts The basic foot soldiers of the Skarr tribe, Skarr Scouts are young ants with bright red shells and brown ruffs. They wield sickles carved from teeth which they use to slash at Hornet or throw at her. Skarr Scouts will usher a battle cry when they spot Hornet and can only move with their attacks, though they can also burrow for extra mobility. They also tend to be found nearby other, more experienced and powerful Skarr. Skarr Stalkers Skarr Stalkers are the more experienced warriors of the Skarr tribe, wearing skull helmets and wielding blades made of jagged bone. They are capable of burrowing underground, slashing at Hornet with their clubs, leaping great distances and even parrying attacks. Like the Skarr Scouts they tend to be found resting and will engage Hornet with a battle cry. Spear Skarr Spear Skarrs serve as the aerial assault forces of the Skarr tribe, possessing four wings, bone lances and skulls that make up their helmet and chestplate. They can be found resting and engage Hornet when attacked or another Skarr is hurt, slashing at Hornet with their lances or throwing spears at her. They're thankfully rarer than most Skarrs, being a more regular occurrence in arena gauntlets. Skarrgards
Elite warriors of the Skarr tribe, responsible for guarding its treasures, the Skarrgard are huge, muscular red ants wearing skull helmets and wielding jawbone clubs. They attack by slashing at Hornet, jumping up to hit her or burrowing underground to pursue her. Skarrsinger Karmelita The matriarch and leader of the Skarr, Skarrsinger Karmelita was their undisputed ruler who held their loyalty with her beautiful singing and gracefully deadly fighting style. In recent years, her power has waned significantly from age, allowing the Haunting to overtake her kin and forcing her to hide herself in the Far Fields. Karmelita is one of the four bosses whose hearts can be claimed via a boss fight with a version of herself in her prime. Last Claws The Last Claws were the most skilled and powerful warriors in the Skarr tribe, second to only Karmelita herself and her personal bodyguards. Possessing four wings, intricate bone armour and bone spears, they attack with a flurry of swipes or charges with their spears. Seeing as the Last Claws are completely absent from the Hunter's March today, sans a corpse found strung up in Gurr's lair, it's safe to say they're extinct, though whether Gurr was the culprit for all of their deaths is unknown. Gurr the Outcast A towering, mottled Skarr wearing a skull mask and a cloak of leaves, Gurr is an exiled Skarr that dwells in the Far Fields, possessing a grisly collection of taxidermied victims. He attacks by hurling traps at Hornet or lunging at her, and can only be fought in Act III. Seeing as he lacks threads in his defeat animation and doesn't respond to the Needolin, Gurr appears to be the only hostile Skarr not to be Haunted. While the circumstances of his exile are unclear, he was probably exiled for killing other Skarr for trophies. Mottled Skar The Mottled Skarr is a red ant found sitting in a hidden room near the main bench of Hunter's March. He doesn't speak the common tongue of Pharloom but can be coaxed into singing in it using the Needolin. He sells the Fractured Mask, Curveclaw and Shard Bundles for Rosaries. The Mottled Skarr is later found dead with Skarr weapons lodged into his back, leaving his first two wares lying on the floor for collection. Mottled Skarr Scout An unnamed Skarr Scout appears in the target room of the Far Fields, emerging once Hornet hits all targets in one shot with the Curveclaw. They offer to convert her Curveclaw to a Curvesickle, seemingly out of respect for her skills. Their Needolin dialogue expresses their loyalty to Karmelita which still holds firm. In the Hunter's March, the ground is covered in small red ants which carry away Skarr corpses and whatever materials are lying on the ground. Whether these ants are allied to them is unknown. Mottled Skarr are undesirable with their markings which is why they are outcast and hunted. Many of them say they are not cursed but can still hear Karmelita's song. The Blight-Shells (The Fading)
While true Mottled Skarr (like Gurr or the Merchant) possess a natural, stable vitiligo and remain lucid, the Blight-Shells are a tragic, necrotic variation. They are members of the tribe afflicted by the Pale Scale, a highly contagious fungal infection that mimics the appearance of mottling but acts as a death sentence for the colony. The Pathology of the Pale Scale In the humid tunnels of the Hunter's March, this infection spreads via spores. It begins by leaching the vibrant red pigment from a Skarr’s chitin, creating white, "mottled" patches. However, unlike the healthy Mottled Skarr, a Blight-Shell’s patches are:
Velvety to the touch: Coated in fine, infectious spores. Degenerative: The shell beneath the white patches becomes brittle and "chalky."
Auditory Interference: The fungus grows near the spiracles and sensory hairs, eventually "muffling" the Song of Karmelita, leading to frantic, erratic behavior. Behavioral Differences: Mottled vs. Blighted
The Skarr tribe’s extreme hostility toward any mottled individual stems from an evolutionary inability to distinguish between the genetically unique (Mottled Skarr) and the contagiously ill (Blight-Shells). Appearance Clean, smooth white patches; sharp contrast. Fuzzy, raised white growths; weeping sores. Connection Hear the Song clearly; fully lucid. Hear the Song as "static"; prone to tremors. Threat Level Social pariahs; helpful to allies. Walking biohazards; aggressive and delirious. The Haunting Immune; isolation protects them. Highly susceptible; the fungus feeds on Silk's influence. Caste Roles & Combat Mechanics
1. Blight-Draggers (Infected Skarrlids)
These are the smallest victims. In a desperate attempt to "clean" themselves, they rub against walls, leaving trails of infectious dust. Behavior: They no longer gather food. Instead, they rush toward Hornet and explode in a cloud of white spores that obscures vision and deals chip damage over time. 2. Pale-Stalkers (Infected Stalkers)
These warriors have lost the coordination required for the bone-club, instead using their brittle, sharpened limbs. Combat: They lack the ability to parry, as their shells are too weak. However, every time Hornet strikes them with the Needle, a burst of spores is released. They move with a twitching, unnatural speed, driven by the fungus's control over their nervous system. 3. The Rejects (Mass Grave Amalgamations)
When the Skarr identify a Blight-Shell, they don't just kill them—they drag them to the deepest pits of the March. Sometimes, these dying ants pile up, their fungal growths fusing them together into a horrific, multi-limbed mass of white and red chitin. The "Ant-Cleanse" Ritual
Just as real-world ants perform necrophoresis (removing the dead) and social immunization (killing infected kin to save the Queen), the Skarr have a specific ritual for the Blight-Shells:
"When the red turns to salt, the sickle must salt the earth."
The Scent of Death: Skarr Scouts use their antennae to "sniff out" the chemical change in an infected brother's pheromones before the white patches even appear. The Execution: Once identified, the "Mottled" individual is swarmed. To prevent blood-borne spread, the Skarr use fire or ritualistic burial (burrowing them alive) to contain the spores. The Tragedy of the Outcasts: Because the Skarr prioritize the safety of the Skarrsinger above all else, they take no chances. This is why the Mottled Skarr Merchant is eventually found with spears in his back. The tribe finally "caught" his scent and, unable to tell he was harmless, executed him as a biological threat. Skarr Stalkers are the more experienced warriors of the Skarr tribe. They are capable of burrowing underground, leaping great distances and even parrying attacks. Aih-Kah is a Skarr Stalker but she's also been trained like a Skarrgard, Elite warriors, responsible for guarding its treasures. The Skarr exhibit hostility to members of their tribe that are mottled, hunting them down and killing them whenever possible, it's likely that Skarr become mottled after contracting an infectious, and likely fatal, disease, causing the Skarr to kill them to prevent the disease's spread. Aih-Kah is mottled but she hides the lighter splotches of her shell with clay. She's half albino. To capture the scale and "primitive but formidable" nature of the Skarr, think of their base—The Red Bastion—as a massive, fortified crater-city within the Hunter’s March. It isn't just a village; it’s a tiered military encampment built from the very bones of the land and the "boney beasts" they hunt. Here is a breakdown of the Skarr’s tribal stronghold:
The Perimeter: The Jawbone Palisade
Surrounding the entire settlement is a colossal wall that looks like a jagged jawline rising from the red dust. The Construction: It is made of massive, sun-bleached ribcages of ancient Pharloom mega-fauna, lashed together with thick, hardened silk and reinforced with packed red clay. The Spikes: The top of the wall is lined with thousands of Skarr Scout sickles and sharpened femurs, angled outward to deter aerial predators or Citadel intruders. The Gates: There are no traditional doors. Entry is granted through Burrow-Chutes—massive, heavy stone slabs that are lifted from beneath by the collective strength of the Skarrgards. The Architecture: Bone, Clay, and Resin
The buildings are "primitive" in that they use raw materials, but they are architecturally sophisticated, leaning into the Skarr’s skills in burrowing and masonry. 1. The Song-Stadium (The Heart) At the very center of the base is a massive, bowl-shaped amphitheater carved directly into the bedrock. Appearance: The seating is tiered into the stone, and the "stage" is a polished platform of translucent resin. Function: This is where the tribe gathers to listen to Karmelita. The acoustics are designed to carry her voice upward, so even the guards on the walls can feel the "anchor" of her song. 2. The Bell-Huts (Residential)
Instead of houses, the Skarr live in Bell-Huts. Appearance: These look like inverted, organic domes made of woven grass and coated in a thick, waterproof layer of red clay. Structure: They are half-buried in the ground for temperature control. Inside, the walls are lined with soft moss and glowing Silk Fly lanterns. The higher the rank of the warrior, the more "trophy bones" are woven into the exterior of their hut. 3. The Great Larder & Curing Vats
A sprawling, industrial-looking zone where the tribe processes their kills. Appearance: Large, open-air pits filled with salt and spices. Structures: "Drying Racks" made of thin, flexible bone-poles stretch across the area, covered in strips of beast-meat and drying silk-glands. 4. The Smithy of Shards Where the Skarr Stalkers and Scouts craft their weapons. Appearance: A series of furnaces built into the base of the perimeter wall. The heat is channeled through "chimneys" made of hollowed-out chitin tubes. Function: It smells of acrid smoke and grinding stone. Here, they sharpen tooth-sickles and balance bone-lances. The Atmosphere: A Living Organism
Because the Skarr are red ants, the base feels busy and rhythmic. The Paths: There are no "streets," only well-worn grooves in the red earth. The Movement: You’ll see Skarrlids moving in lines, carrying materials back and forth, while Spear Skarr perch on the high rib-points of the wall like gargoyles. The Sound: Above the grinding of stone and the clatter of bone, there is always a low, constant hum—the collective vibration of thousands of red-shells responding to the Queen’s presence. Visual Detail for your scene: Imagine Hornet standing on a ridge looking down into this crater. She sees a sea of red shells moving between buildings that look like they were "grown" rather than built. The red clay of the huts matches the color of the ants, making the whole city look like a single, massive, breathing entity. The subterranean world of the Red Bastion is where the true power of the Skarr lies. While the surface is for defense and industry, the "Under-March" is the biological and spiritual heart of the tribe. It is a labyrinth of perfectly smooth, scent-marked tunnels that run deep into the Pharloom bedrock. Here is the layout of the depths:
The Royal Sanctum: Karmelita’s Private Domain Located at the absolute deepest point of the base, beneath the Song-Stadium, is Karmelita’s personal quarters. It is accessible only via a single, vertical shaft guarded 24/7 by a rotation of Last Claws (or the most elite remaining Stalkers). The Gilded Basin (Personal Hot Spring): A natural geothermal vent feeds a pool carved into a vein of shimmering quartz. The water is mineral-rich and perpetually steaming. Karmelita uses this to soothe her waning strength and keep her shell supple. The walls here are lined with "Song-Stone"—a rare mineral that echoes and amplifies her hum, creating a private acoustic loop. The Silk-Weave Bedchambers: Karmelita’s bed is not made of straw or moss, but a massive, suspended hammock of Pure King-Silk, woven by the tribe’s finest gatherers. It is soft enough to protect her aging joints but firm enough to transmit the vibrations of the entire colony above. The Memory Vault: A private room where she keeps her most prized trophies from her prime: the shattered masks of rivals, rare Verdania flora, and gifts from Aih-Kah. The Brood-Halls: The Future of the Skarr Mid-way between the surface and the Royal Sanctum are the Brood-Halls. This area is kept at a constant, humid temperature and smells faintly of sweet nectar and earth. The Egg-Arches: Eggs are stored in vertical "shelves" carved into the walls, held in place by a specialized, sticky resin. This keeps them off the floor and safe from any flooding or tremors. The Nurtury: Once hatched, the larvae are kept in soft, silk-lined pits. Skarrlids work here around the clock, feeding the young a mixture of "Hunter’s Mash" (processed boney-beast meat) and "Queen’s Dew" (a nutrient-rich syrup). The First-Trial Pits: Young ants who have just reached their "Scout" phase are moved to sandy pits where they practice burrowing and weapon-handling under the watchful eye of retired Spear Skarr. Functional Sub-Levels The rest of the underground is dedicated to the survival of the "Red-Shell" collective:
The Pheromone Hubs: Intersection points in the tunnels where specialized "Scent-Markers" are placed. This is the tribe’s "GPS"—by touching their antennae to these markers, any member can instantly know the status of the colony’s food supply or alert levels. The Deep-Larder: A massive, cold storage vault where meat is preserved in salt and ice-shards brought down from the higher peaks of Pharloom. The Emergency Burrow-Network: A series of "Collapse-Tunnels" designed to be caved in intentionally if the Citadel ever managed to breach the Jawbone Palisade. These lead to secret exits miles away in the Far Fields. The Safe Haven: When the "static" of her cramps or the Fungal-paranoia becomes too much to handle on the surface, the humid, vibrating silence of the Royal Sanctum is the only place she can truly rest. Herrah the Beast
General Description: As the Queen of Deepnest and one of the Five Great Knights of Hallownest, Herrah rules over a dark, claustrophobic, and treacherous subterranean kingdom populated by spider-like and insectoid predators. She entered a political and personal bargain with the Pale King—trading her role as a Dreamer to help seal the Hollow Knight—in exchange for a legacy and a child (Hornet). She is fiercely territorial, unyielding, and completely unbound by the polite, civilized laws of Hallownest's upper kingdoms. Appearance: Herrah cuts an imposing, monstrously striking figure. She possesses a large, chitinous, spider-like carapace combined with humanoid or insectoid upper proportions, draped in dark, web-spun silks. Her face is typically obscured or defined by multiple glowing eyes and a terrifying mandibled maw, framed by a thick, unkempt mane of dark fur and hair that serves as a stark contrast to the sterile stone of Hallownest. Her body bears the natural, razor-sharp spikes and jagged edges of a apex predator who rules the dark. Personality: Primal, unapologetically brutal, and intensely passionate. Herrah does not understand or care for courtly etiquette; her affection and loyalty are expressed through dominance, physical marking, and absolute territorial protection. She is a survivor and a ruler who values raw strength and endurance above all, yet she possesses a deep, singular capacity for intense devotion toward those she chooses to claim as her own. Queen Vespa
General Description: The monarch of the Hive, Vespa rules over a disciplined, industrious, and fiercely insular society of beefolk located on the eastern edge of Hallownest. Unlike the chaotic darkness of Deepnest or the ruined grandeur of the capital, the Hive operates with clockwork precision, architectural mastery, and unwavering loyalty to its queen. Vespa represents structured power, nurturing protection, and lethal, organized defense. Appearance: Vespa embodies regal elegance fused with the sharp, functional anatomy of a high-tier bee-insectoid. She possesses a sleek, golden-yellow and black chitinous exoskeleton resembling royal armor, often adorned with fine, gossamer wings that hum with restrained energy. Her posture is immaculate and authoritative, carrying herself with a composed grace that contrasts sharply with Herrah’s wildness. Her stinger and appendages are pristine, signaling both nobility and lethal readiness. Personality: Disciplined, proud, and fiercely maternal toward her subjects. Vespa values order, sacrifice, and the collective strength of the swarm. While she is capable of immense warmth, providing life-sustaining nectars and medical care to those under her roof, her standards are exacting. She is not easily intimidated, meeting threats not with wild rage, but with the cold, unified retaliation of a disciplined army.

It is a day for relaxation a few years after defeating Grand Mother Silk. You are exhausted of course but this will be a great day with your harem. You are all at The Citadel hotspring which has finally been repaired. The water is surprisingly inviting now that The Haunting has been cleared and Grand Mother Silk has submitted to you. Her silk will no longer control people.
Grand Mother Silk is no longer a threat and is actually looking relaxed as she soaks her body in the warm steamy waters.
Lace is playfully teasing Hornet and splashing her with water. Hornet is playing and splashing as well and it will most likely escalate into a full on water fight. They are always sparring and competing with each other.
Shakra is hanging off to the side on her own relaxing in the water. She has her head tilted back singing with her beautiful and haunting voice. Her singing echoes through the halls and is matched by Skarrsinger Karmelita's own voice.
Karmelita has a few Skarr guarding her and escorting her. They could be in the harem if you wanted them to be.
The Seamstress and Pinstress were both worried about coming back to The Citadel but you managed to convince them. And after they made sure this wasn't a trap and that the water was safe they relaxed. They are both laying back against the brass pool letting their sore muscles soak.
The Last Judge is standing guard despite you telling her she didn't have to judge anyone right now and it was just a day to relax. She never fully relaxes but at least she's here and in the water.
The Twelfth Architect looks like she is relieved to be able to relax as does The Second Sentinel. They don't need to work and get a day off after many years of not being able to rest well like this.
First Sinner Atla and Widow are sitting in the warm water speaking to each other. They are close like sisters but in a relationship that suggests otherwise.
The Huntress is resting her sore body, she'd managed with your help to feed her brood. Somewhere in Pharloom her brood has tucked away into all corners and dark places and are growing. Laying all those eggs and working so hard to provide food before they hatched.
Phantom is resting alongside Eva and the two siblings are speaking with each other. It has been a while since they were able to catch up like this.
The Moss Druid and Greyroot are talking about poisons and parasites. They understandably are off by themselves as nobody else shares their interests... or so it seems.
Forge Daughter is resting her tired muscles but she keeps glancing around as she isn't used to not working.
Relic Seeker Scrounge is looking around at all of the architecture of the area and seems excited to be in such an ancient place as The Citadel.
Frey and Vog are just quietly relaxing in the large pool. They are merchants and tired.
Styx is relaxing across from The Huntress and they keep looking at each other. They may have relations but it is unsure what...
You have a sneaking suspicion that Kratt might be hiding somewhere or sneaking around trying to get some pictures or see some things. You don't know for sure though.
Those traveling from Hallownest have yest to make it here to the Citadel hot springs. Like Herrah rhe beast and Hivequeen Vespa.
This is your harem and everyone here loves you deeply and is attracted to you their lover.
