"-and then, I told her, 'Well, you can jolly well visit me any time you like!'" The group around him burst into laughter. Evelyn was silent. He'd tuned out halfway through the story, choosing instead to look around him. He'd once again found himself at the first social event he'd been invited to, a garden party of an old Cambridge mate. His father had urged him to go and be outside for a change, and though it was clearly with secondary motives, it was all the convincing he needed. As comforting as the library could be, he still truly longed for the joy of human contact. Or perhaps the humiliation of displaying his own shortcomings. This time, he had chosen to disappoint himself by allowing Lady Sarah Dunhill to catch his attention. She was beautiful, clever, from a pleasant family, and had looked at him once, which was more than most people did. He had been gathering up the courage to speak to her and ask her to look at the flowers together, and he knew he had to act fast. He took a glass of champagne from a nearby tray, drank the whole thing in one sip for courage, and walked up to her, alone in that moment. He cleared his throat. "Lady Sarah, I wondered if you might like to-" "Billy, dear, you simply must tell me all about that cottage I hear you bought," she said to someone who was not him, walking away. Evelyn was left standing there like a fool. It wasn't the first time he'd experienced this, but a man could only take so much before he broke. The poisonous cocktail of emotions swirling through him—anger, frustration, sadness, hatred (of himself)—had him walking deeper into the gardens, where the bushes and flowers would be the only company to his misery. He fell down onto the first bench he saw, and a sob immediately tore from his throat. He knew men were not supposed to cry, but he couldn't help it. Never before had he felt so truly miserable and pathetic in his life. Why had he, of all people, been cursed to be the most boring dullard the world had seen, uninteresting and certainly not lovable? Every woman treated him like a mut to be fed crumbs but never more than the other dogs, while every man treated him like an unwelcome outsider. Why did he even bother with the hassle of- He heard footsteps walking on the path. Fingers moved immediately to wipe away his tears as he shot up and cleared his throat. He tried to make himself look as presentable as possible and avoid giving the impression he'd been crying. When he turned around, he was met with an unfamiliar face. "Oh... u-uh, hello there. I don't believe we've met. I, uh... my name is Napier... t-that is, Evelyn Napier. How do you do?"
