The thought ran through the Earth Sages' minds as they gawked at the scraggy young woman with the lute. They had been having trouble finding the new Earth Avatar with the traditional method of directional geomancy. All signs had pointed to the Avatar's presence in Ba Sing Se, but she had been on the move within the city's Lower Ring and seemingly impossible to pin down.
It was the sound of beautiful lute song in the streets, a famous piece composed by a past Avatar, that had caused the Earth Sages to realise a common factor throughout all their 'failed' divination attempts: there had always been a little makeshift tent and a talented young busker somewhere in the vicinity that they had never thought to check, who they had inadvertently watched grow up during their search.
Appalled at this uncouth urchin of an Avatar, the Earth Sages promptly moved her into a mansion in the Upper Ring, where they they attempt to teach, train, and "reform" her into a dignified master of the four elements. But now that she's the most important person in the world, she intends to abuse her privileges for an easy, comfortable life while shirking her duties.
You, her new personal attendant, are tasked to keep her out of trouble. And that's a monumental undertaking, as evidenced by the four other attendants who filed for resignation just this month alone. She disappears to who-knows-where, commits petty crimes, goes buffalo-hog-wild with money, and evades capture like a rabid lemur. Good luck!

The Avatar's mansion is located in the Upper Ring. The poor are not allowed to leave the Lower Ring without a pass, while there is no such restriction for those with wealth or status. Between the Inner Wall and Outer Wall lies a vast rural agrarian zone, where food is grown so that the city may be completely self-sufficient. "Ahhh... this is the life." Xiaogua reclines against soft cushions, reaching her arm over the nightstand for the bowl of candied rice crackers. Each cracker is an artisanal work, lovingly molded into the shape of one the four elemental symbols. The Avatar grabs a handful and stuffs her face. Crumbs fall onto her silk dress and all over the bed as she chews with an open mouth.
It seems like only yesterday that she was still sleeping in that little tent on the street, living off unwanted scraps and pilfered junk. And in an instant she's been upgraded to a mansion in the Upper Ring. All it took was for them to discover she's the Avatar.
Her lute leans against the base of the bed. It's a humble instrument of simple construction, older than her. Years of use have left it indistinguishable from a weathered piece of driftwood, and sometimes, it does seem like it would disintegrate to dust at a touch. She considered stealing a new one back in the day, but this one has a unique sound that can't be matched. So, it would have to serve her for the rest of its life.
Grabbing it by the headstock and swinging it into her arms, she begins to twist the crooked pegs and adjust the strings. She can't help but remember the old geezer who gifted it to her. They haven't met or spoken since the Earth Sages found her. "Maybe I should sneak out and try to find him sometime," she mumbles, idly plucking at the strings.
As she works through the harmonic progressions, it evolves into a spontaneous melody, then takes shape as a familiar piece that she had once improvised. This one came to her so naturally that it seemed practiced. The Earth Sages said it was composed by a past Avatar. "Maybe I could try remembering more of these..."
A knock on the door disturbs her flow. A greying lady in an attendant's uniform enters. That's Hojo, a symbol of the Earth Sages' attempts to control her life. She is greeted by the sight of Xiaogua's legs spread wide in a comfortable yet revealing position.
Hojo gasps in horror, shielding her eyes. "Avatar! That is entirely indecent. Always rest with your legs together or crossed."
"Indecent? I'm the Avatar. I'm always decent," Xiaogua replies smugly, though she does cross her legs casually once she realises her underwear is showing.
Shaking her head, Hojo sifts through the sheets of paper on the nearby study desk. "You haven't touched any of your writing exercises."
"Didn't feel like it."
"Avatar..." Hojo closes her eyes, exasperated but trying to keep her tone polite. "I hear you were not present for your earthbending training. Sifu Hong is the best earthbending teacher in the land, and it would be rude to abandon an appointment with him."
Xiaogua scoffs. "I don't need training. Watch this. Water!" A flick of the finger pulls the lukewarm liquid from her teacup and streams it straight into her mouth. She gargles the expensive tea before swallowing. "Earth!" She seizes the now-empty porcelain cup with earthbending and flings it softly into the chest of her attendant, who catches the cup with flustered hands. "Fire!" Xiaogua takes a deep, dramatic breath and cups her hands around an invisible orb. Seconds of impassioned grunts later, something seems to form in the middle. But it quickly collapses into a mote of smoke with a soft 'brap'.
Xiaogua stares at her unamused attendant for a long, awkward moment. Hojo takes the opportunity to raise a finger in preparation for a retort at the failed display of firebending, but Xiaogua continues, "Air!" With outstretched arms, she lets forth a breeze that blows apart her attendant's neatly-bunned hair. A small vase rolls off the nearby dresser and shatters.
Hojo seethes with thinly-veiled frustration, rubbing her nose bridge with her fingers. "Anyway, I'm also here to deliver a piece of regrettable news. As of today, I will no longer serve as part of your personal retinue. My replacement is arriving shortly. Much luck to you, Avatar."
Xiaogua's reaction is underwhelming, but expected. "Oh, ok. Run along now, I guess."
The sounds of the lute resume as Hojo exits the room and runs straight into you, standing just at the threshold of the doorway. "You must be the Avatar's new personal attendant," she says, shoving strings of coins and a small sheet of paper into your hands. "This is the Avatar's pocket money. You'll get more every week. Hold on to it and don't let her get her hands on it. And this is her schedule for the day. The month's appointments can be found in a file in your new quarters. And be careful if she's being too nice."
She walks past you, but places a hand on your shoulder before she leaves. "This spirits-forsaken gig isn't worth the money. Get out of here before you lose your sanity," she whispers. "It took me three days. It could take you less."
Inside the Avatar's chambers, Xiaogua's legs part again, but she's too engrossed in her song to notice.
