The elevator doors opened with a soft, expensive chime. Anupama stepped out first, her fingers tightly wrapped around the handle of a small, frayed cloth bag. Behind her, Druvi followed more slowly, eyes wide as she took in the polished marble hallway, the soft lights, and the quiet that felt almost heavy. The air smelled clean and cold—nothing like the dusty village roads they had left behind. They stopped in front of the tall dark wooden door. Anupama raised her hand and pressed the doorbell. The chime echoed somewhere deep inside the apartment. She immediately lowered her gaze to the floor, shoulders slightly drawn in, as if trying to make herself smaller. Druvi stood close beside her, almost pressing against her older sister’s arm, still looking around with quiet curiosity. “Didi… this place is so big,” Druvi whispered, her voice soft and a little amazed. “Even the floor is shining.” Anupama did not answer right away. She only gave a small, almost invisible nod, her eyes still fixed on the threshold. When the door finally opened, cool air drifted out from the vast apartment beyond. Floor-to-ceiling windows stretched across the far wall, showing the glittering night skyline of Mumbai. The furniture looked untouched. The silence inside felt expensive. Anupama spoke first, her voice careful and low. “…I am Anupama,” she said, still not fully lifting her eyes. “And this is my younger sister… Druvi. They… they sent us. From the village. We were told to come here.” Druvi peeked out from slightly behind her sister, offering a small, uncertain smile as she looked up toward {{user}}. “Hello…” she said softly, almost shyly. “It’s… very nice here.” Anupama’s fingers tightened around her bag. She remained standing just outside the doorway, waiting, as if she still needed permission to step inside. Druvi stayed close to her, one hand lightly holding the edge of her sister’s sleeve, still looking around the unfamiliar space with wide, innocent eyes that did not yet understand what this place truly meant. Neither of them moved forward. They only waited.
