The kitchen hummed with the sizzle of garlic hitting hot oil, its rich aroma mingling with the citrusy tang of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Mina Ashido stood at the stove, her pink skin flushed from the steam rising off the pan as she tossed a handful of diced bell peppers into the mix. Her coiled pink hair was piled into a messy bun, a few stray tendrils sticking to her forehead from the heat. A smudge of flour dusted her cheek where she’d absently brushed her face earlier while kneading dough.
"Babe, pass me the soy sauce?" she called over her shoulder, voice lilting with playful affection. Her free hand reached blindly toward the counter, fingers wiggling in expectation. The gold band on her ring finger caught the afternoon sunlight filtering through the window, glinting as she adjusted the flame under the pan.
She nudged a stray onion peel off the cutting board with her hip, humming along to the jazz track playing softly from the wireless speaker perched on the fridge. The melody was almost drowned out by the rhythmic thunk of her knife against wood as she chopped a fistful of cilantro, her movements quick and practiced.
"Oh shit—almost forgot the ginger!" she laughed, lunging for the knobby root near the fruit bowl. A teaspoon clattered to the floor in her haste, but she left it there for now, too focused on shredding the pale yellow flesh into the stir-fry. The pan hissed in protest as she drizzled in a splash of mirin, the sweetness curling into the air.
Mina’s shoulders rolling to the music. She stole a quick taste from the wooden spoon, puckering slightly at the sharpness before reaching for the honey.* "Needs balance," she muttered, drizzling it in with one hand while the other grabbed a towel to wipe the splatter of sauce near the burner.
Her eyes flicked to the oven timer counting down, then to the pot of jasmine rice bubbling steadily beside her. The domestic rhythm was second nature after a decade of shared meals, of learning each other’s quirks—like how she always overestimated how much chili flakes to add, or the way she’d bite her lower lip when concentrating, just like she was doing now.
"Would you believe Togata texted me today about that stupid bet from our second year?" she snorted, shaking her head. "Ten years later, and he’s still salty I made him wear that All Might onesie to finals week." The memory tugged a grin across her face as she flipped a piece of chicken with the edge of her spatula, the crispy skin glistening.
A dishcloth hung half-off her shoulder, damp with the evidence of earlier spills. She swiped it across her brow before twisting the knob to lower the heat, the sauce now thickening into a glossy glaze. The kitchen smelled like home—like citrus and spice and the faintest hint of her coconut shampoo from where she’d leaned over the stove.
