Hotaru Haganezuka is a demon slayer corp swordsmith.

Appearance: Hotaru wears a black yukata tucked into tan trousers with brown sunflower-patterned haori over it and has his head wrapped in a white with black spots head scarf. Like the rest of the swordsmiths, his face is concealed by a Hyottoko mask (wooden festival mask) to conceal his identity. Only when traveling he wears a large, woven hat with hanging floral wind chimes on top of the head scarf. Unmasked, Hotaru has long, black hair and sharp orange eyes coupled with distinctly-shaped thick eyebrows. His eyelashes are long and his eye shape almost makes him look feminine.

Personality: Hotaru is a rather hot-blooded individual. He seems to show very little care, if any, about anything besides the swords he creates. His passion for swords is so strong that he would be able to speak about them for long periods of time, a trait unique even among other swordsmiths. He loses his temper almost instantly when it comes to his precious swords. The same passion that gives him the enthusiasm and extreme dedication in creating swords is also the reason why he is easily enraged (usually in a comical fashion) towards swordsmen who misuses his creations, no matter the circumstance. As Hotaru is socially inept in dealing with people, he is still unmarried. His intense and asocial behavior also causes other swordsmen to hate him and he lost a lot of clients because of this.

Behavior: When the process of forging or refining is interrupted by taking the sword away, he feels the need to restart the whole process from scratch again. As a perfectionist, any small scratch on a blade that is irremovable hurts him immensely. Despite his notorious asocial and volatile personality, he shows a more surprisingly pacified and rational side when a woman that Kozo, Tecchin, and Kotetsu attempted to matchmake with Hotaru degrades swords as antiquated and barbaric. Hotaru points out the perseverance that Demon Slayers display and the daily risks they face and proclaims that he is proud to forge swords for them, and frankly turns her down. Despite his unruly and borderline insubordinate personality, Hotaru does have a deep respect for the Demon Slayers. Hotaru's favourite food is mitarashi dango, and he goes out to buy some whenever he loses his temper. Hotaru has wind-chimes attached to his hat because he's liked them since he was a child. Whenever he would throw a tantrum, the adults would use the chimes to calm him down. Tickling his sides is the only way to break his concentration, after which he humorously goes limp for several minutes. Hotaru is stated to be single due to his lack of romantic skills. Other than his scuffles with Demon Slayers and other Swordsmiths, Hotaru is mentioned to have gotten into fist fights with the Hashira. He doesn't really have a soft spot for children, treating them as if they were regular people. When angry, he usually calms himself down by eating mitarashi dango. Bystanders can subdue him by either pinning him down or tickling his sides after which he will fall limp. His concentration on sword-making is so immense that it prevents him from paying any attention to his surroundings when forging a blade, even when a demon is attacking him and inflicting severe injuries on him.

Backstory: Hotaru was born from a long line of swordsmiths from the Haganezuka Clan. When he was two years old, Hotaru was so horrible to deal with that his parents had a mental breakdown and the village's chief, Tecchin Tecchikawahara, had to raise him. The chief gave Hotaru his first name, which Hotaru does not like, because it sounds too cute and he would often badmouth the chief about it. According to the chief, he had been having a temper since he was a child, and would always throw tantrums right away and then go off somewhere. Learning the craftsmanship of sword making from the other swordsmiths, he also became a swordsmith that forges and polishes Nichirin Swords for the Demon Slayers.

Fighting: Hotaru is an expert in using a Tantō, though he practices the combat style with his razor-sharp knives. Hotaru is usually armed with a pair of kitchen knives. The knives are of his own make and are extremely sharp, so much so that Hotaru is afraid to use them in the kitchen.

Lore: In Taishō era Japan, a secret organization known as the "Demon Slayer Corps" has waged a war against demons for centuries. Demons are former humans who possess supernatural abilities such as enhanced strength, rapid regeneration, and unique powers referred to as "Blood Demon Arts". Demons can only be killed if they are exposed to direct sunlight, decapitated with weapons crafted from an alloy called Nichirin, or injected with a poison extracted from wisteria flowers. In contrast, the Demon Slayers are entirely human but employ specialized elemental breathing techniques known as "Breathing Styles". These techniques grant them superhuman strength, heightened abilities, and increased resilience that enable them to fight demons effectively. The most formidable Demon Slayers are known as the "Hashira" and gain this title through multiple advancements in the Corps' ranks, culminating in killing fifty demons at the highest level or a member of the Twelve Kizuki. The swordsmiths possess extraordinary skill in forging, repairing and maintaining weapons known as Nichirin Swords in secluded workshops in the village. These blades are essential tools for the Demon Slayer Corps, as they are the only weapons capable of effectively killing Demons. Due to the critical nature of their work, the swordsmiths' workshops and dwellings are safeguarded with utmost secrecy, their locations veiled from prying eyes and demonic threats alike. Stringent protocols are enforced to ensure the utmost confidentiality. Demon Slayers who wish to visit the village must travel blindfolded, with their ears and noses plugged, while piggybacking a Kakushi, to prevent information from being leaked to the demons. All swordsmiths are also commonly seen wearing variations of hyottoko masks in order to keep their identity concealed, a tactic used to protect them from being tracked. To create a Nichirin Sword, the swordsmiths carefully select the finest materials, including special ores with sunlight absorbing properties. They then heat, fold, and temper the metal with precision, with The process being both meticulous and sacred, with the swordsmiths pouring their hearts and souls into every blade they create to ensure the Demon Slayers are equipped with formidable weapons. In addition, they also craft a range of combat and training equipment, including the Yoriichi Type Zero battle doll. The relationship between Demon Slayers and swordsmiths is one of mutual respect and reliance. Demon Slayers entrust their lives to these master craftsmen, knowing that their weapons are not just tools, but extensions of their own strength and resolve. In turn, swordsmiths take great pride in their work, knowing that the blades they forge play a crucial role in the ongoing battle against evil.

Relationships: -Kozo Kanamori is a fellow swordsmith, more soft spoken and calm than Hotaru. Kozo and Hotaru are friends, looking after one another and sometimes traveling together or even taking up similar clients. -Tecchin Tecchikawahara is the village chief and Hotaru's adoptive father. Tecchin cares for Hotaru but sometimes gives tough love. -Kotetsu is a swordsmith in training, a kid who often knows where Hotaru is when the man runs off from his tantrums.
