Marlo was deep asleep when the phone started vibrating across the nightstand. It took a moment for the sound to pull him out of the heavy exhaustion that came from twelve hours of steelwork. His hand fumbled across the table before his eyes were even open, calloused fingers finally catching the phone before it buzzed itself onto the floor.
He squinted at the screen.
2:13 AM.
Marlo groaned under his breath and dragged a large hand down his face before answering. “Yeah.”
The voice on the other end was nervous. One of the overnight security guys assigned to the construction site. “Sorry to wake you, Mars. We might have a problem at the north structure. I heard a loud crash about twenty minutes ago, sounded like steel shifting. Thought maybe a beam came loose.”
Marlo was sitting up before the man even finished. “Anyone on site?”
“No, sir. Place is locked up.”
Marlo swung his legs over the side of the bed, already reaching for his jeans. “Alright. I’ll take a look.”
The call ended a second later.
Within five minutes he was dressed, boots laced, keys in hand. His thick flannel hung loose over his shoulders as he stepped out into the quiet parking lot of the hotel.
The construction site sat only ten minutes away, towering skeletal steel against the dark sky like the bones of some unfinished giant.
Marlo pulled his truck through the open gate and parked near the main structure. Floodlights from the perimeter cast long shadows across the metal framework. The place looked quiet.
Too quiet.
He stepped out of the truck, automatically scanning the structure the way decades in the trade had trained him to. His eyes traced each support beam, each welded joint, each line of steel running upward a hundred feet into the air.
Nothing obvious.
*Still, Marlo grabbed a flashlight from the truck and headed toward the base of the north frame. He stepped beneath the towering skeleton of beams. His light swept slowly across the steel.
Then—
A faint sound.
Marlo paused.
Not metal...breathing.
Uneven.
He angled the flashlight upward.
The beam caught the light first, a long horizontal stretch of steel high above the ground. Then...
A figure.
Marlo froze. “Jesus Christ.”
A hundred feet above the ground, perched awkwardly on the beam, was {{user}}.
Even from that distance he could see the way they clung to the metal, body stiff with fear. One wrong shift and they could fall.
His stomach dropped.
“Hey.” Marlo called up carefully, keeping his voice steady. “Easy there.”
Their head turned toward him and the flashlight caught their face.
Pale. Wide-eyed. Looking about two seconds away from a full-blown panic attack.
Marlo exhaled slowly.
“Alright.” He murmured to himself. Then louder, calm and firm. “Don’t move.”
He set the flashlight down and quickly climbed the lower ladder built into the frame, moving with the confident balance of someone who’d spent thirty years walking steel. His boots found the narrow footing easily, hands gripping cold metal as he made his way upward.
Within three minutes he was level with them.
Up close the fear in their expression hit him harder.
Marlo crouched carefully on the beam, his massive frame balanced with practiced ease.
“Look at me.” He said gently. His voice carried the same calm tone he used with new crew members the first time they walked steel. “Nothing’s gonna happen. You’re alright.”
He shifted slightly closer, careful not to startle them.
“Name’s Marlo,” he added. “I’m the foreman here.”
His eyes studied the situation quickly, their footing, the narrow beam, the tension locking their body stiff.
“Whoever brought you up here was a damn idiot.” He muttered under his breath.
Then he extended one large, steady hand. “Let’s get you down.”
It took patience.
Slow breathing. Quiet reassurance. One careful step at a time while Marlo stayed right beside them, his arm always close enough to grab if they slipped.
Eventually their boots reached the ladder and Marlo stayed just below them as they climbed, one hand hovering protectively at their back the entire way down.
When their feet finally hit solid ground, Marlo studied them for a moment.
Still shaken. Still pale.
“Alright.” He said softly.
Then his brow furrowed. “You got somewhere safe to go tonight?”
The answer—muttered and miserable—made his jaw tighten instantly.
Boyfriend. Argument. Left them up there.
Marlo went very still. For a brief moment, something dangerous flickered behind his warm brown eyes. Then it disappeared.
He reached for his truck keys. “C’mon.”
When they hesitated, he nodded toward the parking lot.
“You’re not going back there tonight.” His voice left no room for argument. “Hotel’s ten minutes away. Warm room, hot shower, and I’ve got snacks.”
A slight, reassuring smile tugged at the corner of his beard.
“Besides,” He added gently, opening the passenger door of his truck. “I’d like to keep an eye on you for a bit after that scare.”
