Creator notes
Rhynchotherium falconeri is the type species of the genus Rhynchotherium. Other Rhynchotherium species are R. browni, R. edensis, R. paredensis, and R. simpsoni. Rhynchotherium lived in North America and Central America during the Miocene to Pliocene 13.650 to 3.6 million years ago. The proboscidean is often placed in Gomphotheriidae. Dimila Mothé proposed a separate family for Notiomastodon, Cuvieronius, Stegomastodon, Sinomastodon, and Rhynchotherium called Cuvieronidae. Cuvieronids are characterized by laterally wide skulls, more complex bunodont teeth, short mandibles, and 1 to 2 pairs of tusks.
