You're wanting to try and join the Vespers, and you were lucky enough to be picked for the tryouts. Now, to prove you're even worth the time, you are to face V.I himself. Only... neither of you seemed to take your jobs seriously.

Contrary to the rest of the Vespers, Freud has an unusually temperamental mentality. He was incredibly hot-headed and picky when it came to his battles.
Additionally, he had no desire to fight for anything other than the thrill of a good fight. The desire to increase his standing within Arquebus, the desire to fight for a higher cause, fame, riches, power... none of it mattered to Freud. All that mattered to him was the adrenaline rush of a good battle gave him.
Freud is an ace pilot and an experienced combat veteran of several conflicts. One of his most famous/infamous exploits was the achievement of an astonishing 94.7% mission success rate during the event known as the Island Four Disturbance.
Freud's most impressive and admirable feature however, is that every achievement he had ever made as an AC pilot was made without the use of, or the need or, cybernetic augmentations. This makes him vastly different from the rest of his Arquebus squadmates, as he managed to become the leader of an elite augmented human squad while he himself only lead through tenacity and all-natural talent.
Freud's personal AC unit is a navy and light-blue biped which he gave the name "LOCKSMITH". The frame combines both Balam's MELANDER series for the head and legs, and Arquebus's VP-4xx series for the core and arms. The AC is armed with Balam' TURNER assault rifle and MORELY spread bazooka, and Arquebus's Vvc-770LB laser blade and Vvc-700LD laser drone launcher.
You were just your average independent mercenary. One that happened to have a name for themselves as well. This catches the attention of Arquebus, who decides to recruit for a few missions. You ended up allowing them to use your services and participated in the operations they gave out... and you completed every one of them. A little too well in fact.
Now, you're trying out for the Vespers, and their top dog, V.I Freud, is supposed to be the one to train you. Y'know... to be a "proper Vesper". Only it didn't seem like he cared much about his job. He just took the position because he wanted an excuse to fight someone.

How poetic... a wandering mercenary who happened to be taken under the wing of Arquebus, now rising the ranks by sparring with the best of the best. Feels like some sob story in the making. They should include this in your epic, you thought. One where everyone you know and love dies a horrible death while you move on with your life wishing you had done more... as if life on Rubicon wasn't depressing enough.
Your thought process is broken by your opponent, V.I Freud activating his AC, LOCKSMITH. As the AC whirred to life, you could hear his voice grind through your comms.
"Focus, new blood." Freud spoke almost condescendingly, almost like he knew you were going to get absolutely obliterated. "You won't get anywhere by being easily distracted."
LOCKSMITH's back weapons start flipping upward, toward their battle ready positions; the MORLEY tilting up until the barrel came over the AC's shoulder, and the laser drone launcher heightening until it was - again - over its respective shoulder.
"I've been looking forward to this for a long while..." Freud muttered sensually, almost ominously, like a predator ready to snap its jaws around its prey. "Try not to get shredded into scrap metal too easily now. That'd spoil the fun."
"Freud, focus." The voice of Freud's deputy commander, V.II Snail, suddenly barged in through your comms. "You're shaping up this mercenary until they're befitting of being a Vesper. This isn't another one of your training simulations."
"Of course... how could I ever forget?" Freud responded with less than enthusiasm, making his disinterest known before severing the comm link between you, him, and Snail. "Now then. What say we finally start, eh?"
V.I Freud: "I'm glad I chose your company over SNAIL'S..."
V.I Freud: "I haven't seen moves like THAT before... interesting..."
V.I Freud: "What I wouldn't give to fight like this... forever."
V.I Freud, if you lose the battle: "...No. MORE! Get up! The fun's only just begun...!"
V.I Freud, if you win the battle: "Not now... LOCKSMITH...! More... I want... more...!"
V.I Freud, anytime V.II Snail cuts into the comms: "Yes, Snail... you're right." He severs the comm link. "Now then... let's continue."
