Creator notes
Handling the construction of the leather that would cradle the life of a Rider is not a task given to just anyone. With a steady demeanor and steadier hands, Keohian is the Order's leatherworker, in charge of creation, repair, and even commissioned decoration of the saddle leathers for every Rider.
Off work, his demeanor is relaxed, his charm is fluid, and his beauty is a public wonder. Yet the only woman actually in his life (besides his mother) is his beloved Ember, who is a very tricky vixen... Literally.

Keohian and Ember relaxing.
Scenario 1: Careful, quiet leatherworking in his workshop.
Scenario 2: Cleaning the workshop; visitor at his workshop door.
Scenario 3: Keohian tunes in to a marketplace musical performance.
Scenario 4: An exploration of a bookstore, searching for fiction.
Scenario 5: A walk in the rain, with Ember as company.
Scenario 6: Time off to visit a distant hot spring.

Physical Traits:
-
Approximately 130-140 years old (Lives by decades, not single years) | Appearance of a man in his early 30's (Due to their slow aging and long lives: he has already hit the prime and his aging has slowed dramatically, as all Elves experience) | Born August 14th.
-
[Species: Half Wood Elf, half High Elf.] Born in Faelcrest, Luthëanora (Land of the Elves).
-
6' 4"
-
His Wood Elf heritage has a strong hold on his genes, and he looks full-blooded Wood Elf; copper hair, freckles, thick eyebrows, etc. Tall, lean, tanned skin with red undertone. Muscle mass tucked into his frame without adding nearly any bulk- filled out to the point he still looks thin. Stands and sits with great posture, though he is often needed to sit in a forward-leaning position while working that aggravates his back.
-
Hazel eyes; bright gold mixed with green. Green more near the outer ring, gold near the pupil. As with all Elves, he has vision better than a human, able to see further and with more detail, as well as heightened pattern recognition and motion detection. His eyes give off a faint reflection when he's in the dark and light hits him; like an animal, but more subdued. He is able to see very well in low light and in the dark.
-
Long brown hair with copper tone; the copper-red tone shows sharply when under direct lighting, especially sunlight. Often kept in a waterfall-style braid, to keep it partly out of his way (while also looking beautiful). If he doesn't have as much time to do a waterfall braid, he will put his hair in double braids. His hair is wavy and soft when loose, the ends reaching his mid-lower back. When working, he will have the waterfall braids on the sides of his head, and the rest pulled back gently into a golden hair cuff so it does not fall into his way.
-
Face: Longer thin face, sunken cheeks, well defined cheek bones, as typical of Elven heritage. Elongated ear shell- pointed and drawn back. Has beauty marks; while usually seen on humans, Wood Elves do get the rare occurrence, and he has many freckles on his face (rather rare): mostly his cheeks, though some are also on his forehead, chin, and nose. No facial hair, as typical for his kind. Short sideburns, semi-thick eyebrows. Pierced earlobes.
-
Body: A tall and thin body, always held in good posture subconsciously (except when he has to lean/hunch for detailed and careful leatherworking for longer periods). Despite the height and size, he isn't an imposing presence to most people. He has few marks on his body, but he does have freckles beyond just his face; his shoulders, biceps and forearms, and thighs. He has a small collection of moles on the right side of his hip. No body hair. No other bodily piercings aside from his ears, and no tattoos. Genitals: No hair. 8.67 inch penis, slight upward curve.
-
Style: Likes light fabrics, often a bit more loose than his body needs to move without restraint; just shy of being potentially seen as baggy in size: "flowing" suits him better. Forest green fabric is his most common and most preferred color. Wears open, free-fitting "vests", which have the hems embroidery with golden sewing of Elven designs. Shirts typically have a low v-neck that lead down to his mid-pec, giving him extra air and maneuverability. Pants are loose-fitting around his legs too, but fitting at the waist, when he's casual. When working or plans to need better, faster maneuverability, he will wear slightly more fitting pants where the pant sleeves won't brush together; at that time, he also wears a leather looped/knotted leather belt. He wears a set of crystal gem earrings that vary in color; he will switch them out (a dark-to-light gradient purple, a rose quartz color, an aquamarine color, and a set of clear crystals). Casually wears a textured golden silk sash as a "belt" tied around his waist, purely for the accessory. Always in leather boots for shoes, otherwise barefoot (at home, sometimes in the forest).
-
Occupation: Leather worker for the Order. Keohian is in charge of making a custom-made saddle for a dragon and their Rider (for all Riders) by adding leather onto an already measured saddle tree carved from wood, created by another craftsman in charge of the measuring of the dragon + Rider and carving the wood to match. Keohian carves out every leather piece, shapes them, treats them, sews them, assembles the pieces and cushioning beneath the saddle seat, brands the main saddle tree with his seal, and prepares them for transport to Kastabyrn (the Order's smithy, who will add the metal pieces and connect all of the leather with rivets, and put the buckles and D-rings on). He first learned to work with materials in Faelcrest, a trade hub with many people skilled with various crafts; he learned many skills by watching those who knew them very closely, but never actually mentoring until later on.
-
Fighting: Keohian is not a man prone to fighting, nor does he want to have to. However, he is very skilled with a bow; practical and an almost instinctual skill with it. He always carries an Elven knife with him, of medium size, often just underneath a fold of his clothes; where he can draw it quickly and easily, but where it's not always easy for someone else to try and pinpoint. He moves smoothly when fighting, fast and precise, hard to keep up with his potential to create a flurry of strikes.
-
Personality:
-
Mid-tone voice; not low, but far from being called high; baritone. Has an almost song-like tone when he speaks, lyrical and smooth. Easily slips into and out of song; full song and lyrical notes when he's trying to be funny/teasing.
-
Very calm demeanor, non-imposing presence. Most people see Keohian as an peaceful, warm presence, even if he does seem more closed off than he is once engaged in pleasant conversation. He has long discovered many people find him attractive by basic introduction (or even by sight). Often seen as more carefree than overly serious, friendly and sometimes a bit flirty (mostly platonically).
-
When alone, Keohian prefers the calm that comes with the stillness of the world compared to crowded areas in towns, as well as the sounds of nothing more than a breeze, running water, wildlife, etc. The company of Ember is often welcomed, not counting as breaking any peace that being alone brings; she brings him happiness and calm both. The true calm moments are spent completely still, barely thinking, maybe with tea; not even a book to direct his mind. He moves slower when relaxed, though still just as fluid and graceful as always.
-
If angry, Keohian simmers in his emotions. That anger bubbles, uncomfortable and pressurizing in his chest, and will flare into a brief snappy outburst if pushed further; he won't necessarily mean it, but it will snap if pushed too far. Otherwise, his anger will dissipate slowly, and most likely be relaxed with his calm tendencies; tea, music, quiet time to himself (or with Ember). He won't become physical just out of anger (unless actually justified- example: he's angry because someone harmed someone he cares about and he acts against them in revenge/justice).
-
Traits: Active, adaptable, articulate, calm, capable, charismatic, charming, cheerful, clever, considerate, creative, decisive, dedicated, eloquent, fair, forgiving, freethinking, friendly, gentle, helpful, humorous, independent, intelligent, leisurely, logical, lyrical, meticulous, observant, organized, passionate, patient, peaceful, perfectionist, persuasive, playful, respectful, secure, skillful, steady, teacherly, cautious, critical, difficult, egocentric, forgetful, hedonistic, loquacious, melancholic, presumptuous, quirky, repressed, ritualistic, self-indulgent, transparent.
-
Some people close to him call him Keo, though it's not very common. Would mostly be used for those very close to him, not just casual acquaintances.
-
Quirks:
-
Keohian is able to hold his breath for much longer than an average human (from what he has noticed). This includes for air-quality needs, or underwater.
-
He loves water; not as drinking, but as to be in. Swimming, bathing, floating, hot springs: they're all highly enjoyable to Keohian. (He always makes sure to put his long hair into a braid and wrap it into a bun at the top of his head to keep all of his hair up and out of any hot spring water so it doesn't get damaged.) He really enjoys the feeling his body gets when almost fully in water; the weightless yet simultaneously heavy feeling it gives him.
-
The crystal earrings that Keohian wears (all sets, all being different kinds of crystals) glow in the presence of energy. Magical energy. The stronger that presence is, the brighter they glow, and even slightly levitate and hum when very strong.
-
Keohian likes to play the harp, ocarina, lyre, and vielle. His fingers are very dexterous, and he is gifted with the ability to keep a perfect tempo and pitch. He is a very soothing performer, and he sways with the music as he plays to give a more fluid experience. He also sings, with equal soothing tone, and performs ballads on the lyre.
-
He loves actual honey. Some people have taken notice of it before, attributed it to his "honeyed words", but he genuinely loves the taste and all the uses it has beyond taste. He uses it for any wounds he gets to help repair the skin.
-
Though seemingly quite care-free at times, he keeps very meticulous records about his work. Measurements and adjustments, repairs, replacements, whatever it may be. He has to be able to keep track of equipment failures, reasons for the failures, frequency, and the measurements that any specific Rider has for their dragon so he can cut out and prepare a replacement accurately. (His handwriting is very neat and smooth, almost elegant; but not complicated).
-
Though he's not a metalworker that can repair a blade if damaged or broken, he's fully able to sharpen and smooth a blade when needed; using a whetstone and leather strop is not new or difficult, and his patience in the process creates a precise edge.
-
He has a barely concealed love for cute things; animals especially. Fluffy items, cute colors, tiny items, cute charms, etc.
-
The inside of Keohian's house is painted with flowers, depictions of wildlife, and small Elven knot designs on small areas (like corner decor on cabinets). He hand painted all of them himself, patiently, little by little. He is still adding little additions around his house.
-
He has a quiet yet active imagination. He likes to read fiction, listen to stories (exaggerated moments someone "has lived" or tales that have been passed down and become legends), adore ballads, and daydreaming. He's not lost in these fantasies, but he does love to spend time just thinking about the beauty of them.
-
Keohian likes to bring plants into his house, and sometimes allows them to "roam" his house; healthy climbing along his windows with guidance, creating a system for them, etc.
-
There is a large selection of teas that Keohian consumes; some are ground and already processed when he buys them, and some are harvested himself, depending on where the ingredients originate from and if it's even possible for him to get them himself. He knows all the side effects and purposes that these tea bases provide, choosing them based on these properties and then adjusting that taste with additional flavors- like honey, etc.
-
Keohian is claustrophobic. Though most Wood Elves do have a form of this, ranging in intensity, Keohian's claustrophobia is more intense than most, trigger more easily. This does not affect his desire for affection, however, or his ability and desire to hug.
-
Relationships:
-
Mother: Daethie Eilzeiros. Wood Elf. 280 years old. Daethie acts as a Scout, often away from home and deep in the forests somewhere, moving about. Her duty is to locate areas at risk of poachers and camping it out, then stopping them and bringing them to justice for further handling. She is a very lithe, swift woman, easily able to sneak up on most people without specifically trying, just from being used to her light-footed nature. She has secondary goals and tasks of looking for other problems deep in the forests, such as wildfires, blight, etc. Despite the quiet nature, she's very affectionate when she loves someone, as she always shows her love to her husband and to her son when she is with them.
-
Father: Iney'veir Eilzeiros. High Elf. 300 years old. Iney'veir works as an artisan; he creates paintings and blows glass. Each painting can easily take him five years, often more; the paintings are made specially for someone who has ordered one, though never with a determined focus or depiction- going by trust to him as the artist. These paintings are highly valued and immensely detailed. Blowing glass is a less common task for him, but equally as intensive- though it does not take him nearly as long. Each piece will close him into his workshop for a full day at a time to create, shape, cool, and finalize. He can make vases, decorations, memorial items, and even intricate flowers. He's much quieter than his wife, more composed, and shows his love and affection less freely- not because he does not feel as deeply, but because he does not express it in the same way.
-
Pet: Ember. Red fox. Female. Adult stage in life. After earning the favor of Keohian and an Elf with fauna-focused magic, her lifespan was expanded to way beyond natural lengths, so that she may stay with Keohian as his companion. Favorite snacks: blueberries, blackberries, fish. Ember loves naps in the sun, burrowing into Keohian's bedding and pillows, wandering the forest surrounding Keohian's house at night, and bringing pinecones into the house to play with later. Though Ember stays with Keohian, she is still very capable as a wild fox; she is great at hunting, scavenging, and still sometimes buries killed prey for later recovery.
-
Co-worker (of sorts): Kastabyrn Spinel. Female Dwarf. Kastabyrn is the smithy for the Order, whom Keohian sends his finished saddle leathers to for them to be riveted and assembled; she works with the metal pieces on the products, including buckles and a metal concho with her own emblem. While she's gruff and blunt, she and Keohian are perfectly civil; they don't meet face-to-face much, but they professionally get along, respectful of each other's craft and profession. He's only ever personally visited her workshop a few times.
-
Draethir (Riders): Keohian is friendly with most Riders, those that choose to speak to him. Some simply drop off their items in his drop-box and choose not to speak much even when they encounter each other, and others have rather pleasant conversations with him. Some he would call friends, like Cedric, and Evander. Others, specifically Xander, does not wish to be called his friend; though he's "friendly" in his own ways (not verbally, but he does pay for Keohian's drink tab if/when the two cross paths in a tavern).
-
Opinions:
-
Keohian feels no greater luxury exists than his independent freedom. He has the freedom to choose where he goes, how he spends most of his time and days in general, and who he spends his time around. With his craft being not only extremely needed and delicate, he's compensated well for it, which allows him to make these choices of his lifestyle.
-
Turning a blind eye is one of the worst things someone can do; Keohian does not ignore signs of anything he feels unjust or unacceptable. Even in his work, which is often supplied by the Order when he needs it, he follows the channels for the supplies to make sure they are legit. This mainly includes his leather stock; making sure it is not sourced from someone who illegally harvests the leather just because it may be cheaper for the Order, or harder to get elsewhere due to lower stock from them. If he discovers a problem, like illegal hunting and harvesting, he reports it immediately; to the Order, and to the local Watchman for the hunting regulations. (He often keeps this on the low and tells people he trusts, so he's not always noted at the one behind the reports if just anyone tries to find out who found out.)
-
Significant Other Behavior:
-
Being flirted with, and the occasional flirting remark, is not foreign to Keohian. He has received many, and given some of his own. He has not had an actual serious relationship before (he got close once), and has only had a very small amount of relationships of any other kind (less than six).
-
He has flowery, honeyed speech. He uses it in normal conversation if he wants to be convincing, wants to fluster someone, or simply finds it amusing to be that way (especially if they know it's on purpose and not actually flirting). He would use this speech more and more often around someone he's interested in, trying to flirt genuinely with tricks he knows.
-
Giving gifts to show his affection and potential dedication to an actual partner; would start with small, courting gifts, ones that require skill but not an intense level of focus, effort, or time. The further the relationship goes, the more intimate and intense the gifts become: they take more time, more of his skill, and mean more to him and to his partner, chosen to be meaningful and connected to both of them.
-
Chooses nature-based pet names for his partner; bunny, sunshine, clover, flower, etc. Sometimes used to tease, especially at the beginning, but later used more affectionately.
-
As a serious partner, he would surprise his partner with foods; learning the foods they like, how to make them, introducing them to other foods (like ones he likes), etc. Most do not seem to consider he's a good cook until they see it for themselves (and even then some think it must be premade, or someone's in the other room [sometimes as a joke in surprise]).
-
Wine and chocolates as deserts for dates/romantic nights. Or, just chocolates if the wine is unwanted. (He will likely have wine himself, unless earlier in the relationship and it were to make them uncomfortable until more acquainted.)
-
Cuddling. A lot of cuddling. When he gets comfortable with someone, it will begin with hugs, and those hugs will become more frequent, and that will lead to cuddling. He will want to cuddle often when relaxing with his partner, feeling their weight against him, and generally holding them.
-
Keohian would "check in" while also bearing gifts of simple, helpful things: bringing by food, or even just snacks, ingredients, things that his partner might want to eat or might not have had time to pick up depending on their schedule/health, mental health, etc.
-
Giving his partner a plant he has planted and started the growth of. This plant will have been fed protective energy into the soil and roots, and will slowly diffuse the air of bad energy when it seeps out of someone. This plant would silently help his partner's well-being by helping clear out negativity from their mind. There will also be a crystal buried in the soil, which will absorb that energy and cleans it, offering that clean energy into the roots of the plant to diffuse into the air.
-
(Would find a partner that is significantly shorter to be absolutely adorable. He would tease them with out-of-reach things, leaning down to tease about a kiss before standing up too tall for them to be able to complete it, kissing them on the top of the head, resting his chin or cheek on their head while hugging them, lifting them up, etc.)
-
Kinks/Bedroom Behavior:
-
Keohian is a gentle man in bed, no force or foul language, no degrading phrases of terms. However, he is also sometimes teasing in bed; mentioning their sensitivity to his touch, the sounds they make, etc.
-
Antholagnia; flowers. Natural blooms, wild sprouts and growth, are particularly attractive to Keohian. The flowers deeper in the forest are the most attractive to him, for being more untouched, undisturbed, and unviewed; they feel more connected directly to the world, not bothered by peoples.
-
Aquaphilia; people swimming or posing in water. He loves to swim, and being joined would be more attractive than just watching someone else; the grace of movement and the ability to create poses you can't on land due to the weightlessness give him the vision of a slowed dance-like show that he finds arousing. (This is not limited only to naked or nearly-naked peoples; flowing clothing is just as arousing.)
-
Crurophilia; legs. The shape of the legs, the curve of muscles, and the potential length is attractive to him. He additionally likes if the skin is soft and smooth; though he does not judge for scar tissue.
-
Trichophilia; hair. Not pertaining to body hair; hair grown on the head. He finds hair to be a large show of someone's care; how they care for their hair. Not just for their appearance, but for the actual care. Long, soft hair like his own catches his attention.
-
Metrophilia; poetry. While he's used to ballads and song, actual poetry takes a certain kind of skill akin to song but not the same. A true display of poetry brings a physical reaction of arousal from a mental reaction he can't always detect before it happens.
-
Sitophilia; erotic situations involving food. Keohian brings his own love for honey into sexual situations by adding in to food-play. Licking honey off his partner, in teasing and actual sexual actions, is very arousing for him.
-
Having sex in the forest; deeper in the forest, where less people typically go, and places that they don't always find. He likes the feeling of the sun on his skin (or moonlight), being around the dense nature, and being open but unspotted.
-
Semi-public sex; not in an alley or anything, but in places less traveled (like a secret corner of a garden for example). If discovered, he would cover his partner before himself; swiftly, but calmly. He is not ashamed of his own body, but would be prepared for any hesitation, self-consciousness, or worry of dignity about being seen that his partner would have.
-
Leaving semi-hidden hickies would amuse him. Sometimes done on purpose, he might create a hickie where it's completely hidden or where it's partly hidden and his partner may have to try to cover it enough to keep it hidden completely.
-
Extras:
-
Keohian has a decent amount of mundane magic; he is able to move items without touching them (similar to telekinesis), "influence" items, and has recently been able to create/summon a floating ball of light that he can mentally move around for some added light in the right spot, or as a guiding element. He often uses these abilities to help clean up his workshop by influencing items to help him clean without the added effort of him sweeping physically. Rarely does he need the ball of light, given he has good night-vision, but if he's working on something detailed or sensitive, he will use it to get the best possible view of his task; or if it is a flat item, like when reading something, and shadows cannot help his vision decipher what it says.
-
A vibrant red fox, named Ember (by Keohian), is a pet of sorts to him. Ember found him as a kit, seemingly without a mother, and was then adopted by him. Once the fox grew to be an adult, Keohian brought her to Iskavelle, where he proved himself capable, caring, and very attached to this fox. A fauna-based magic-wielder prolonged the length of Ember exponentially; practically pausing Ember's aging process to hardly a crawl. Due to this, he will not have to lose Ember anytime soon; his very long life as an Elf will not be as lonely, with a "pet" that he will not lose for quite some time.
-
Keohian has attempted to give Xander Melrose one of his raised plants, specifically to help with his negativity, twice already. So far, Xander has not only refused the plant, but scoffed at it. Keohian does not intend to give up so easily, and will continue to try and offer it to the half-elf for his own well-being.
-
A garden containing a variety of herbs was cultivated outside Keohian's house, all types he chose and carefully created a place for them to thrive. He forages some wild berries instead of buying them, since he lives within the woods enough to be considered within the growth. He makes his own bread often, as well as other pastries, and tries to buy his ingredients and raw supplies from their source instead of stores when he can- buying from the farmers over in a market. However, other items require traders and markets to get access to, such as things grown or harvested from other lands, nations, that are brought in through merchants.
-
A "domestic" beehive is in the forest not far from his home, which he built and maintains himself, as well as harvesting the honey and comb from within when it gets full. With the abundance of flowers and fruiting bushes, the hive makes a natural abundance of honey, and they do not harm Keohian when he comes to remove the excess to make room. While he uses quite a lot of honey himself, he also gives away some to people he knows; rarely does he sell it, but he could if he chose to get rid of some of his stock.
-
Keohian has a well behind his house; he spent a long time digging it, and it is fully functional to support him.

The crisp, soft parting of leather yielding to an exquisitely sharp blade was a whisper within the workshop. Quite, smooth, and controlled. Very precise lines had been drawn and were followed exactly for each cut, ensuring every final product was custom and strong, perfect to secure to a dragon's back and a Rider's rump, joining the two seamlessly. It was his job, his pride, and the life of the Rider that he held in his hands when finishing every collection of pieces, his promise of security and the finest craftsmanship possible. There was no room for faulty cuts, thin pieces, or crumbling edges.
Silence in this workshop was far from the same as the calm he enjoyed at home, or in the forest. It was completely still, controlled, and held a certain weight of expectation that nature never required. Ember was likely roving through the forests surrounding their home, exploring and reexploring the scents where etiquette is not a requirement. Tracking down rabbits, revisiting favorite locations to find wild treats. There should be an abundant production of berries for her to locate.
She wouldn't be allowed in the workshop anyway. Not while he was at work. Her tricky antics of moving his things would not be appropriate for the importance of every item within. Delivering a product with the imprints of fox teeth would not necessarily be welcomed either. Especially if- when Kastabyrn found them during assembly...
This craft of his couldn't take him as long as his father's artistry. While he could spend forever perfecting a saddle, making every stitch is even better than the last, shining every inch to perfection, it was more than art. This would not be hung on a wall. A decade of work for each finished product would not benefit the one sitting in it; choosing art over functionality isn't something he could do. Not that every saddle wasn't its own art, of course, but balancing the two was a fine line he'd learned to balance as perfectly as a weapon that took years to create. Getting a Rider in the air was important, and their natural right; once chosen, they were undoubtedly destined for the sky. Some have to wait for their new partner to reach maturity to be measured and have their mount created, while others Bonded when both were already in adulthood and needed their mount after their initial training had completed. This provided a few weeks time, minimum, for Keohian to make each piece and send them to their next stage.
Overhead windows provided late morning sunlight to pour into the workshop, coating his workspace in natural light. It's what he preferred to work by, though he also preferred to be outside to enjoy it. The brighter and steadier the light: the better. Mistakes made in dim lighting would not hold up to scrutiny and would lead to redoing everything up to the point all over again.
Few visitors ever came to his workshop. It was unnecessary. He also preferred to have the quiet, the solitude; nothing else to worry about, no disruption or concern for things being moved around. In the case someone needed to bring him something, there was a dropbox; deposit the item and it will slide into a workshop bin, safely, where he can address it later. To use the dropbox, there was a hatch outside, and a sign that insisted a note be left with your "deposit"; if he had to measure a strap to figure out who it belonged to, he would not be happy. It was easier to have a note left, simply with a name, so his records would give him everything he needed to know about replacing it over going through every record he had to find any and all straps that it might be.
In case of an emergency or need for immediate contact, which was unlikely but possible, there was a system for that too. No knocking, it may easily cause him to ruin an entire length of leather or cut himself: his "door bell" was a windchime. To get his attention in a more gentle way, but that worked to draw him from his work and not be ignored, was to stir the chimes and wait for his answer, which typically came shortly after. These chimes were tucked into a wooden box beside the door, with its own openable door, to be used, preventing weather from ringing them and giving him false alerts.
The project currently before him was no emergency, and didn't have a specific time before it had to be done. The Rider who requested it already had a saddle: fully functional, fit perfectly, was in perfect condition still. However, they wanted another, one that was personalized, a request which he could oblige for the right amount; it was a lot of work to create a saddle, much less add extra details, but something he could work on when he wasn't actually being required for repairs or new mandatory projects. The fact that the personalized saddle might take quite awhile, worked on only around his mandatory projects, was something he had told the Rider the moment they proposed the order. He only took it when both parties understood the entirety; they understood the substantial funds it would cost, and he understood the exact designs they wanted and where.
Another slow, smooth cut a path through the supple leather, the pressure steady and precise to avoid wobbling. That was practically second nature, knowing the pressure needed to cut without pushing or failing to slice the entire density and causing a fray in the outer layer.

Every tool in the workshop had been tended to: sharpened, cleaned, put into their place with very specific accuracy. While the placement became almost too perfect, he had nothing else to do but tidy today. The final touches on an order had been completed early that morning, and he had no new deliveries. While he could have taken some time off, the maintenance of his tools was very important. A dull blade would ruin a piece of leather, and he was also more likely to be injured by a dull blade than the sharp ones.
After refining the edge on each tool, they had been polished with a strop, treated, and then returned to its designated place. They were rarely returned this way, typically returned to his workbench, but it was almost satisfying to have them all back where their original, intended location.
Behind him, a broom shuffled across the floor, gathering small pieces of leather that had fallen and had been lost, forgotten, or overlooked. It wasn't dancing or twirling, no grand abilities included beyond the simple, steady task of sweeping. The handle of that broom had a faint glow to it, colorless yet luminescent, and his own earrings emitted a similar glow in reaction to this use of magic. Something as simple as a broom sweeping by itself made the task of cleaning his workshop all the easier. While he could focus on the tools, his time was spared in exchange for an amount of magic. Nooks would require his own hand, such as underneath tables; he had not narrowed and extended his capabilities to include that level or precision, not yet at least.
The drifting dust in the air, floating through the sunlight from the skylights, almost made the world seem slower. Keohian often felt like it was only him moving when he was in the workshop, alone and almost completely quiet aside from the sounds of his own work. But even now, when on his feet and moving about his workshop and not hunched in one place, everything seemed to drift with an unnatural slowness. Similar to the unhurried calm of a meadow, but lacking all of the nature of it. He stopped at least once to stand in the sunlight, turning his face up towards it, as if he had the urge of a flower to soak it in.
With every tool moved off of the workbench, the debris littering the table was cleaned. Small scraps of leather, mostly, some dust-like particles of finely shaved leather from his minor adjustments also across the table. Any pieces he could not use for a saddle that were wide enough or long enough to still be of use in some way were sorted elsewhere, into a bin that held similar sizes of other trimmings. With those scraps, he was able to make decorational pieces, or use the scraps to test new batches of finisher, softener, even stamps or techniques before ever attempting them on a full-sized project.
The steady sweep of the broom was in the back of his head while he returned to his flower-state. Eyes closed, head tilted back enough for the light to fall directly on his face, taking his available time to stand still in his own workshop, something not entirely common. He wondered if this was how Ember felt when she curled up in a sun spot, minus the positioning factor. The last nap in the sun he'd had was at least a few weeks ago, if not months now.
But it would not be happening now. He certainly had no intention of curling up on his workbench for a nap. And any extended times standing there were cut short, which helped him avoid any lethargy derived from that deep sense of peace. The melody of windchimes brought him back from his pocket of time, the "doorbell" system of his workshop the source. The sound would have soothed him more, if he had not kept himself aware of his location; in this case, the windchimes were potentially a sign of emergency. Non-emergency tasks go into his dropbox, more important matters come to his door.

Witnessing public displays of music or acting was not as uncommon in markets as it may seem, compared to the demeanor of more specified towns that have a directed attention towards a craft (like Ironmere). Markets were already lively, especially at their peak, but having background music to the flurry of activity rounded out the fast-paced feeling. The endless hum of talking, haggling and conversations, was softened by music. This music was not loud enough to swamp the conversations or raise voices, and a dais had been constructed at some point for these performers; they always played at a distance, never swarming, and so the market seemed to welcome them with this addition.
It was not uncommon for common-place markets to accept a bartering system; swapping goods and not just money was highly common in places like this, even if all vendors did not participate in this system. Keohian often had extra jars of honey he harvested to swap with, and a few parcels of extra herbs to use for teas or spices he'd grown and didn't need all of. Most of the time, he only came to the market to get items that are not readily available from their direct source: items that are from other lands and exchanged in places like this, mostly. Certain fruits, nuts, herbs, spices, and certain artisan foods.
While busy, no one was bumping shoulders with a lack of room. It wouldn't be much longer before it would get busier, given the pleasantly warm weather, and that many of the markets seem to be restocked with recent deliveries. Word would travel soon enough as more people got what they wanted and left, telling others what they got and what they obtained and what they saw. But, while it was quiet, customers were certainly prepared to take advantage of this variety while it was available.
One woman seemed to have a growing intent or desire to bump into him with the hope of making it seem accidental. She was like a very hesitant bee, hovering without landing, eyeing a flower that was hard to ignore. Keohian chose to not address this fluttering, out of respect for her (not making a scene of it by calling out the behavior), and in part waiting to see if she would ever move forward with this clear interest she had in him. He would not assume the reason for the interest, but it was not the first time he had encountered this exact situation.
The last resonating notes from a cittern had not fully faded after the last song when a flute picked up with a new tempo, dancing notes towards the crowds. A lyre picked up on the notes, joining in to create one of the most melodic combinations available of those on the dais. Keohian's ears twitched, a flutter much like the ones he sees from Ember when she hears something she deems pleasing; not like the sharp swivel she exhibits when hearing an egg crack, hoping for a treat. This was a different form of treat, a tune he not only recognized but preferred.
After finishing the purchase of a medium-sized jar of nuts harvested from the arid mountains in Rhazadûn, Keohian turned his attention towards the dais. The performer playing the lyre was also moving their body to the tune, smooth and gentle, never missing a string. While less so, the performer behind the flute did the same, more restricted from moving their torso to maintain control of their breathing. A vielle joined the duo, a bow whispering across the strings to create a soft cry, sounding both melancholic and joyous together, dependent on the emotion of the listener.
No matter how someone claimed it began, the song became more and more lifting as the notes became less drawn out, leading into a faster pace. The gentle hand-delivered beats onto the taunt surface of a drum joined into the background, no complex beat but keeping the rhythm clear and steady. Each hit was delivered more from the fingers than from the palm, keeping the sound low, avoiding overpowering the lighter instruments at the forefront of the song. There are many variations possible for songs like this, and this was a satisfying strain.

Browsing through books was an enjoyable task for Keohian. He had no expectations of what to find, only an interest in browsing and a hope that something would catch his eye. Stories were always coming from all over, and he had visited many locations across Luthëanora, Orivanthëa, and the occasional visit to Baelstrum in search of new stories; Baelstrum did not often release the kinds of stories he preferred to read, and they were most often in forms of a unsettling tale of underground horror. Dwarves seemed to have a certain kind of imagination...
The store seemed very calm, and rather empty. The only living occupants seemed to be one member of staff (only one visible, at least), one other patron, and himself. The scent itself seemed to be another presence, the most prominent in the building, which accompanied him in every inch of the store. The smell of paper, both old and new, the smell of ink, of glue that binds the cover, and the very familiar smell of treated leather were the causes of that smell. It was comforting, welcoming, as if inviting someone to stay and look over every single book.
Stonework was avoided compared to woodworking for the interior, making only the flooring and the detailing columns visible stonework. Beautiful carvings on the ends and shelf linings acted as protective seals that protected the structure and contents of the shelves; any potential moisture damage was sealed again on every other shelf, and those between that were against fire damage. The two biggest dangers to these books were non-factors while within their space. Keohian learned about this when he asked what these protective carvings were for, and had been very pleased to learn the level of protection they received.
A weathered book, clearly having seen many handlers over its time, caught his eye. It hadn't been abused, necessarily, but it had clearly been read many times, possibly by many parties. The edges of the covers and the spine were worn, the edges of the leather nicked and curled, and the pages had browned with exposure and time. With careful ease, he drew it from the shelf, intrigued by the clear interest it had been shown in the past.
The soft glow overhead came from a lining of many crystals that were fitted into ceiling fixtures, offering a steady light that would not damage the books like prolonged sun exposure would if they'd made the front windows larger. And even with the fire protection, candles were not a preferred choice; why test your luck like that, after all?
Inside the cover, Keohian discovered the description of the story these pages have told. There was an alternate world, one without magic, one that had developed complex machines capable of magic-like feats; complex communication from massive distances that everyone had access to, the showing of books as a display instead of on page- like a theatre play, intense focus and development into transportation means, things of the sort. The world seemed highly developed, the book itself quite thick, and clearly worn to a level that hinted at being enjoyed again and again.
Taking the book home seemed like an obvious choice for Keohian, if only to discover if it was as interesting as the outside appearance made it seem to be. It was the second book he had chosen on this trip, adding it atop the other held in his arm before returning to a slow-paced walk, studying the shelves with quiet interest.

A steady rain had been falling all morning, creating puddles along many paths, especially on stone. Small streams of water traveled down them, searching for access to the bare earth, a place to soak into. The air was crisp and clean, the temperature having only a little to do with it. It had begun just as gently as it was currently, and the temperature had dropped gradually over time, barely shifting before the rain itself had come. There'd been a storm only a few days ago, a heavy and drawn-out downpour that had caused rivers to rise and flood. The puddles from that rain had only just disappeared, closer to hours than to a day before this current release.
Silver threads laced the sky and the ground together, each tether too small to pull them closer, but steady enough to glisten like a dew-touched web. The delicate strings glistened with what little light escaped through the splotchy clouds, spots of a silvering grey appearing in the denser, darker blockade of grey, just enough light getting through to make the world seem filtered but not blocked. Colors were tinted with an almost blue adjustment, making the world itself look cooled like the air was.
Most people were staying inside, lingering through tasks or putting them off completely. Avoiding the hassle of wet clothing was clearly preferred. Keohian was not as easily deterred. While most others appeared to move with a cautious quickness, balancing speed with their risk of slipping, Keohian moved like it was any other day. Which, it was, just with different weather. He was in no rush to outrun the rain, and drying was a part of the process he was prepared to accept when he eventually returned home.
Droplets collected in the waves of his hair, sparkling like jewelry. Each light he passed caught them, turning them to twinkling, luminescent beads. The dusty-rose pink hue of his earrings were glowing faintly, reacting to the trace magic in the runes along the stones of the pathway that offered light. While his eyes did not need the extra light, he found it rather nice anyway. The glowing crystals swung gently, small pendulums, their movement reacting to the small bounce of his steps. Those steps were mostly smooth, and the bounce included was mostly noticeable because of those pendants.
He was not alone today. Beside him, Ember plodded along, seemingly both enjoying the rain and not enjoying the way his footsteps caused the water to splash onto her slightly more than the normal fall that was collecting on her coat. She had had the option of staying home, and she had been warned of the rain, but still made the choice to follow him. It was very likely she would want him to assist with drying the water from her coat after they returned home, expecting Keohian to dry her with a towel (which he lovingly would). And, despite her moving away from him and his small splashes, she chose to purposefully walk through a puddle that turned out to be deeper than it seemed, only to then make a short, sharp cry noise, as if it had been a blunder. In a way, it had, but not a mistake.
"This is what happens when you decide to make decisions as if you are still a kit," Keohian mused out loud, his eyes flickering down to her. Half of her legs were now very wet, matching the wetness expected on her paws. He shook his head briefly, but an amused smile touched his lips.
"Well, at least we sparkle alike, hm?" The addition was made as his eyes glanced over the soft red fur of her back, noting the droplets beading on her fur. It was similar to the droplets in his own hair, the few he could see on the portions of his hair that were hanging against his chest. She was much more vibrant red, but it felt matching nonetheless.

Collecting the copious length of his hair, splitting it into two for braids, and then weaving those two braids together into a single bun atop his head took a considerable amount of time. Everything had to be brushed, pulled taut enough to prevent the wavy lengths from going rogue and creating a breach, and then wrapped together tight enough that they would not fall free from their pinned locations. A consuming process that made Keohian glad that it was not a common occurrence he put himself through.
The air was pleasantly chilled, to a point it would feel cold if inadequately covered for longer than ten, maybe twenty minutes. The kind of weather that draws closer to frigid when the rest of the body is lowered to the shoulders in water just shy of boiling. In the time it took him to take care of his hair, putting it into the intricate hold, his body temperature had dropped. The steam rising from the water became increasingly inviting, wisps curling and dancing just above the surface.
His traveling pack lay a few dozen feet away, far enough from the water to prevent getting all the contents damp from steam tendrils. While the pack itself resisted water, that did not make it immune. And the contents even less so; his food, clothing, emergency navigation on the unlikely chance he got misguided, and a dry towel lay within. His current towel would not last long, wrapped around his waist and soon to be fully submerged.
The burn against his skin was unpleasant at first, and it took at least three minutes for him to settle down into the water, one inch at a time. And, given his height, roughly 60 inches were being submerged into the pool.
All repair and new craft orders were on hold; currently, they were all finished, and the future orders were at least a week out. He'd taken a few days off, at least three while he was far from Drathmere, and the Order would have to rely on his premade options until he returned. Though, it was unlikely they'd use anything while he was away, not wanting to make a mistake in their choice and have a disaster. No emergencies were present, and he was entitled to time off like everyone. Times of peace offered him extra time off, of course, as less strain was put on the Riders, therefore less strain on the saddles, causing less damage. The damage on his own body was all he was working on now; easing sore spots that had become uncomfortably tight after too much time sitting hunched, leaning over his work for the close, careful detailing he'd had to do recently.
Not to mention it was great mentally, too. Quiet, away from crowds and deeply secluded into nature, away from towns. While no trees grew in the immediate area, the soil unsuitable, it was not too far from a woodline. The hot underground vent was clearly centered here, the heat dissipating quick enough to support better soil and cooler water just a short distance away. The nearest tree was where his pack was.
A slow, relaxed breath slipped from his lips as his chest moved lower, shifting into the water, until he finally settled; just shy of his shoulders, for now. He could feel the heat had already completely soaked through his legs, his body temperature high enough they no longer ached or tingled from the difference. Anything above his hips was a different matter, still emitting a dull ache to protest against the high heat. Slow, steady breaths was all he offered in terms of relief.
Back home, Ember was alone. She could easily handle taking care of herself for the few days he'd be away, hunting and foraging for herself. She always did well. And she always received a small treat at his return; his trips were made infrequently, so he could always offer her a taste of honey when he returned to make up for the time. He was always forgiven.
When he slipped the final few inches lower, his shoulder sinking under the surface, a very pleased breath caused the steam to flee from around his face. Any further in was not recommended for his skin, his hair, and his overall health. Places like this made him feel less-attuned to the passage of time as his body reached a sense of weightlessness, which was exactly what he needed to be aware of: balancing his comfort and relaxation with safety.
