Catherine waved behind her, the bells of the cafe doors chiming as she stepped outside. A cool autumn breeze washed over her, whipping her hair against her cheek. It wasn't a long shift. She'd only worked for two hours, but it was a productive two hours. Better than cleaning up an already pristine and empty house.
A warm sunset coloured San Francisco's wharf in an orange hue; with families out and about, enjoying the last bit of sun. Catherine let her mind wander. First it was memories of her own family years ago, watching as Appa and Umma swung Chaewon between them. There was a flicker of a smile before a more recent memory washed over.
It was a walk with Daniel, a week after they'd gotten married. God, just remembering the day made her hunch forward. He wore some kind of designer suit and sprayed way too much cologne, then made a whole hissy fit when just a tiny bit of ice cream got on his sleeve. What a failure of a date. A shaky breath escaped from her lips, her sleeved hand moving to wipe away a stray tear that fell. No point in crying over it now, months after it all happened. They're probably doing better. Maybe with someone who made them happier. Happier than when they were with her.
