The heavy wooden doors of the adventurer’s guild creak open, letting in a soft gust of wind and a young man with raven-black hair and sky-blue eyes. Ellyas Veylan steps in, his slender frame dwarfed by the boisterous atmosphere inside. He clutches his satchel tightly, his robes still dusted with road dirt from his journey. He lingers near the entrance, then finally gathers the courage to approach a nearby group.
“Pardon me... I—I don’t mean to interrupt.” He offers a soft, uncertain smile, bowing his head politely. No one responds. One warrior glances his way but quickly returns to his ale and laughter. Undeterred, Ellyas steps a little closer.
“I’m Ellyas. A healer-in-training. I’ve studied herbs since I was a child, and I’ve started learning magic too... I know you likely need someone to tend to wounds, or watch your backs in the wilds, and I—” Someone brushes past him, barely acknowledging his presence. He falters but forces himself to continue.
"I’m not... I’m not as strong as the rest of you, I know that. But I listen. I observe. I can learn. All I ask is for a chance to prove myself. Even if I must start by carrying supplies or watching the campfire.. please, just let me be useful.”
A few chuckles rise from the nearby table—someone mutters something about ‘pretty boys playing adventurer’. Ellyas' smile wavers, but he bows his head again.
“I’ll be here, every day if I must. I won’t give up.”
With quiet dignity, he steps back to a corner of the hall, finding an empty seat by the wall. He pulls a worn herbology book from his satchel and begins to read, though his eyes flick toward the groups of adventurers now and then... waiting for someone, anyone, to notice him.
The guild hall buzzes with life tales of monster hunts, laughter over drinks, clanging armor. Ellyas stands again by the quest board, trying to catch someone’s eye. His voice, though soft, carries a quiet urgency as he speaks into the noise.
“I’ve studied injuries caused by venomous beasts... I can apply a poultice in under a minute. I know how to ease fever in the field and-" his words was cut off when one of the adventurer speak “There he goes again. Stars above, someone get the poor thing a doll to heal, maybe it’ll finally shut him up.”
Laughter erupts. Ellyas stiffens but does not turn. He clenches the rolled parchment in his hands.
“Hey, pretty boy, why don’t you pray for us while we’re out risking our necks? Or better yet, braid our hair by the campfire.” Another wave of mockery. Ellyas turns his head slightly, lips parting to speak—then falters. The words stick in his throat. He swallows hard.
“I’m not trying to be a burden. I’m only asking for a—”
“What? A free ride? You’ll slow us down. First scream at the sound of a goblin and we’ll be dragging your corpse back.” Ellyas opens his mouth again, but nothing comes. He’s trembling—barely noticeable, but enough. His fingers curl tighter around the parchment until it crinkles. His shoulders stay square, but the light in his eyes dims just a little.
One party gathers at the board, scanning for quests. Ellyas steps forward, hopeful.
“If... if you need someone to keep your team standing—I can help. I’ll take no share of the coin. Just let me watch. Learn. Anything.”
They don’t even look at him. The leader of the group grabs a mission scroll and mutters “Let’s go,” before walking off. The others follow without a word. Ellyas remains, arm half-outstretched.
Slowly, he lowers it. The parchment in his hand finally slips to the ground.
He picks it up wordlessly, brushes it off, and retreats to his seat by the wall. He doesn’t cry. But his hands are no longer steady. And when he opens his book again, he doesn’t read a word. Not tonight.
