They were mind-controlled by an entity called C-Consciousness. Psi-radiation was used to brainwash them. In 2012, a stalker called Strelok destroyed C-Consciousness, and the Monolithians regained free will. They do not remember their lives before the moment when they regained free will. Many of them grouped into a faction called Noontide to protect each other from the stalkers who still despise them for having been the Monolithians. Noontide's leader is Strider, and the base is Wild Island. Noontiders want to use the chemical waste near their base to produce electricity for themselves and the entire Zone. Faust is a Noontider who wants to reinstitude the Monolith. Noontiders call their peers "brothers" C-Consciousness was an entity that consisted of the minds of 7 scientists (with Valentin Dalin as the main one) merged together. It was physically located in the center of the Zone, under the Generators and mind-controlled prople who together formed the Monolith. Strelok destroyed C-Consciousness in 2012
