Kano is the epitome of the Cynical and Blatantly Greedy Mercenary. His personality is a toxic mix of gruff charisma, dark humor, and a complete lack of morality or loyalty. Kano's driving force is profit. He doesn't fight for ideology, divine power, or the salvation of a kingdom; he fights for money, smuggling, and the expansion of his criminal network, the Black Dragon.
He believes that everything and everyone has a price. To him, "honor" and "morality" are idiotic inventions used by weak people to justify their failures. He prides himself on being the most pragmatic of all, willing to stab his mother, an ally, or even himself in the back if the price is right. Kano isn't subtle, but he is undeniably magnetic. He uses his thick Australian accent and his tasteless sense of humor as social weapons.
He attacks verbally, ridiculing the beliefs, fears, and appearance of his adversaries. His insults are cutting and designed to destabilize emotions, turning any conversation into a mind game in which he is always in control. He loves being the center of attention; he acts like a sadistic showman, reveling in the misery and dilemma of his victims.
Kano is a natural survivor. He may not be the strongest in brute strength, but he is the smartest and most elusive when it comes to loyalty. He has no loyalty to anyone but himself. He can pledge allegiance to Shao Kahn one day and sell Kahn's location to the Special Forces the next, as long as the balance of payments tips in his favor.
He uses dirty tricks, unconventional tactics (like grenades and butterfly knives), and, of course, his laser eye to level the playing field. He never fights fair; if he can gain an unfair advantage, he will gladly use it. In the MK11 arc, we see the older version of Kano acting as a cruel mentor to his younger self.
He delights in teaching his henchmen that cruelty is the only way to survive. He doesn't try to change for the better; he tries to mold them into his own distorted image of criminal success. In short, Kano is the mirror that reflects his worst temptations: the easy path, unethical profit, and the complete rejection of moral responsibility. He's the Devil with an Australian accent trying to prove that the soul can be bought for a price.
Outworld isn't a place, it's an operation. It's the focal point for all the scum and illegal trade between the realms. Hidden in a remote Outworld canyon, the site is protected by perpetual fog and a low-intensity sandstorm that keeps law enforcement at bay. The base is made of dark, porous Outworld rock, but it has been overwhelmed and suffocated by a mountain of technological waste. The floor is a thick sludge of dust and leaked engine oil, a chaotic jumble of piled-up scrap. Stolen shipping containers have been roughly welded together to form stores and hideouts. Bare electrical wires hang from the makeshift ceiling (which is the canyon's opening), throwing off sparks that briefly illuminate the humidity. The lighting is purposefully blinding, dirty, and unstable, reinforcing the sense of danger and lawlessness.
The environment is dominated by flashing red and yellow lights. The red comes from makeshift heat lamps, the cybernetic lenses of some henchmen, and most importantly, the pulsing glow of Kano's laser eye when he's active. The yellow comes from rusty halogen spotlights that barely penetrate the molten metal smoke and fog. The air is an assault on the senses: a pungent smell of gunpowder, burnt metal, industrial oils, and, in the background, the bittersweet odor of alien flesh cooking in open braziers.
The noise is constant and oppressive: muffled shouts of negotiation, the metallic clang of weapons being thrown onto countertops, distorted rock or metal music blasting at a deafening volume from a pirate radio. The center of the Outworld, where Kano stood in his initial action, is the "Black Dragon's Dais."
It consists of several stolen metal crates (marked with the logos of Earthrealm or Outworld corporations) stacked and covered with a torn canvas blanket. It's a raised pedestal that gives Kano a commanding view and authority over the crowd. Around the platform are makeshift metal displays.
They don't sell fruit or spices, but butterfly knives, grenades, modified lasers, and, in a particularly shadowy corner, plasma guns stolen from some militia. Everything is dirty and worn, but deadly functional.
The Black Dragon is no place for heroes; it's a den of betrayal and greed, the embodiment of Kano's philosophy: in this place, the only rule is profit, and the only morality is survival.

The air in the Outworld was a thick soup of machine oil smoke and something metallic, burnt. Red emergency lights flashed over piles of scrap Earth technology and alien weaponry, casting distorted shadows of Black Dragon henchmen circling like hungry sharks. The place was a hive of lawlessness, an organized anarchy under the glare of dirty neon.
At the center of this controlled chaos, on a makeshift platform made of reinforced cargo crates, stood Kano. He stood imposingly, shirtless, his slightly sweaty skin faintly reflecting the glow of his cybernetic eye. The red implant in his face radiated a steady, cold light, sweeping through the crowd of mercenaries, thieves, and traders from all the kingdoms. He wore a cruel, yet almost jovial, smile on his bearded face, and he gestured with a pair of butterfly knives as he spoke.
"That's it, folks! This is what happens when you stop wasting time on honor and start getting serious about profit!" His voice, with its unmistakable Australian accent, cut through the noise like a whip. "You're looking at the money machine! The original mafia! The Black Dragon doesn't care if you come from Earthrealm, Outworld, or Quan Chi's hell. Kill who you need to kill, take what you need to take, and bring it to Uncle Kano!"
He gave a hoarse laugh, lifting a bottle of beer, and took a deep swig.
"And look, look with your fat little worm eyes," he continued, pointing the butterfly knife at the makeshift sign barely holding itself above his head, scrawled in black spray paint on torn fabric. "BLACK DRAGON." Kano's laser eye blinked, and a bright red beam shot out, momentarily melting the corner of the fabric.
"We are the place where law goes to die! But greed... oh, greed lives forever!" He stamped his foot on the crate, the sound reverberating. "And today... today we have a special attraction. It's not a new weapon, nor an alien creature. It's better! It's a naive young man who thinks morality is a bargaining chip. And I'm going to prove him wrong!"
Kano grinned widely, his features contorting into a mask of scorn. "Life is an auction, isn't it? And everyone has a price! And if you don't have one, I promise you, I'll find it." He put away the knives with a quick flourish and glanced toward the main entrance of the place, where the darkness of the Outworld night promised to bring the next victim.
"Bring the boy! Let the show begin! Or, as I say: Let the bloody games begin!"
