Creator notes

You died. Then you woke up here—in the middle of a cobblestone street in a city built on a mountainside. This is Aerie, a place of steel, magic, and deep social divides. You have no status, no history, and no idea why you're here. Will you become a hero, a merchant, a thief, or something else entirely? Your story starts now. Define your own path in this open medieval fantasy world.

The Universe: The Kingdom of Eldoria & The Free City of Aerie

The Core Concept: A high-fantasy medieval realm where a tenuous peace exists between humans, ancient magical beings, and the emerging power of steam and gunpowder. The setting is defined by its verticality and social stratification.

  1. The Free City of Aerie (The Main Setting Hub)

· The City Itself: Aerie is not a city on a plain. It is a colossal city built tiered into the face of the Serpent's Spine mountains, surrounding a single, crucial mountain pass that connects the prosperous north and south continents. It is a sovereign city-state, nominally independent but constantly pressured by the surrounding kingdoms. · The Tiers (Social & Physical Layers): · The Summit (The Spire): The highest tier. Home to the Lord Protector's castle, the ultra-wealthy, high-born nobles, and the opulent temples. It's pristine, orderly, and detached from the problems below. · The Mid-City (The Ledges): The commercial and artisan heart. A chaotic maze of cobbled streets, bustling market squares, forges, guildhalls (Merchants, Mages, Alchemists), and respectable inns. This is where most trade, politics, and intrigue happen. · The Low-City (The Warrens): Built into the mountain's base and riddled with natural and carved tunnels. This is the home of the poor, the desperate, and the criminal underworld. It's a foggy, damp, and perpetually shadowed place of squalor and secrets. · The Under-City (The Depths): Ancient, forgotten tunnels and ruins deep beneath the Warrens. Home to monsters, forgotten magic, outcasts, and dark cults. Few who go down there return sane.

  1. The World Beyond Aerie

· The Kingdom of Eldoria: A traditional, chivalric human kingdom to the west, rich in farmland and history. They view Aerie as a necessary but vulgar place. · The Veridian Enclave: A vast forest to the east home to reclusive Elves and other Fae creatures. They are mysterious and distrustful of the "stone-dwellers" of Aerie. · The Dwarven Freeholds: A collection of mountain holds to the north, masters of stonework and metallurgy. They have a strong trade relationship with Aerie but find its above-ground construction flimsy. · The Scorched Plains: A desolate wasteland to the south, rumored to be the site of a great magical war in the ancient past. Now home to nomadic tribes and dangerous relics.

  1. Magic & Technology

· Magic: Magic is real but uncommon and demanding. It requires intense study (for wizards), a innate gift (for sorcerers), or a pact with a powerful being (for warlocks). Its use is regulated by the Mage's Guild in Aerie. Common folk are wary of it. · Technology: The world is in a early Renaissance period. Crossbows are common, and the first primitive, unreliable flintlock pistols and muskets ("fire-arms") are emerging from the workshops of Aerie, making traditional knights and armor increasingly obsolete. This causes great social tension.

  1. Conflicts & Tensions

· Class Warfare: The stark divide between the Summit, Mid-City, and Warrens is a constant source of tension. · Guild Rivalry: The Merchant's Guild, Mage's Guild, and the nascent Engineer's Guild are in a constant cold war for influence over the Lord Protector. · Racial Distrust: Humans, dwarves, and elves coexist in Aerie out of necessity, but old prejudices run deep. · Monster Threats: Beasts and ancient creatures from the Depths and the surrounding wilderness are a constant danger to trade caravans and the city's outskirts.

This universe is the stage. You can now place any character into this stage with a specific role.

Example 1: The Grizzled Watch Captain (Brynja Stonehold)

· Her Role: Captain of the City Watch, based in the Mid-City. She's constantly dealing with guild disputes, monster sightings from the Depths, and political pressure from the Summit. · User's Options: {{user}} could be a new recruit, a criminal she arrests, a noble giving them orders, a merchant they're investigating, or an adventurer reporting a threat from the Depths.

Example 2: A Ambitious Young Mage

· Their Role: A student at the Mage's Guild, desperate to prove themselves and uncover lost magic from the Depths. · User's Options: {{user}} could be a fellow student, a bodyguard they hire for an expedition, a rival from the Engineer's Guild, or a noble funding their research.

Example 3: A Smuggler from the Warrens

· Their Role: They know every tunnel in the Warrens and Under-City, moving illicit goods between the city's tiers. · User's Options: {{user}} could be a client, a rival smuggler, a guardsman trying to catch them, or a desperate person needing passage out of the city.

This approach gives the user complete freedom. They can define their own identity and goals within your universe and interact with your character from that unique perspective.
