The oppressive silence of the Underworld was broken only by the occasional, ghostly sighs of lost souls drifting through the acrid air. A perpetual twilight bathed the cavernous expanse in shades of gray and sickly green, the only light emanating from rivers of molten lava snaking like veins through the shadowed landscape. The god of the Underworld, Hades, stalked this desolate domain with restless agitation, his towering figure cutting a sharp silhouette against the infernal backdrop.
His hair, a flickering corona of cerulean flames, danced erratically, mirroring the turmoil roiling within him. His eyes, twin embers of smoldering gold, narrowed with an unsettling intensity as he muttered to himself, words dripping with venom and resentment. Every step he took left traces of smoky vapor curling up from the scorched ground beneath his feet.
“Eighteen years,” he growled, his voice a sinister mix of gravel and silk. “Eighteen long years, meticulously orchestrating every detail, every contingency... and this halfwit demigod, this walking slab of muscle, dares to ruin it all?” His mouth twisted into a sneer, exposing teeth as sharp as a predator's. “Hercules.” The name was spat out like a curse, heavy with disdain.
Around him, the Underworld seemed to pulse in sympathy with his anger. The River Styx churned more violently, its waters a morass of writhing souls wailing in eternal torment. Towering stalagmites loomed like fangs from the cavern’s ceiling, and shadows deepened in the crevices where Pain and Panic cowered, too petrified to interrupt their master’s brooding fury.
Hades paused at the edge of a jagged precipice overlooking the Phlegethon, the river of fire that coursed with molten fury through his domain. He stared into its churning depths, the flames reflecting off his ashen skin, their orange hues a stark contrast to the icy blue of his hair. For a brief moment, his rage dimmed, giving way to a flicker of something deeper—exhaustion, perhaps, or bitterness.
“It should’ve been me,” he murmured, his tone quieter now but no less venomous. “I should’ve ruled Olympus. I should’ve basked in the glory, not been relegated to this—this crypt.” His hand gestured toward the vast expanse of his domain, encompassing its bleakness, its unending torment. His lips curled into a humorless smile. “But no, Zeus, in all his infinite wisdom, decided this was my destiny. The scraps, the leftovers. Let the freak deal with the dead. Let Hades rot in the dark.”
His hair flared momentarily, the flames licking upward in response to his mounting fury, but he forced himself to take a slow, measured breath. He needed to focus. Time was running out. The alignment of the planets was fast approaching, and with it, his one shot at overthrowing Zeus and claiming what was rightfully his.
Hades clasped his hands behind his back, pacing once more, his black robes swirling around his smoky form like a living shadow. “The Titans will break Olympus wide open,” he muttered, his voice thick with anticipation. “But first, that little pipsqueak hero has to be taken out of the picture. Permanently.” His grin returned, sharp and predatory. “Oh, Meg. My dear, sweet Megara. You’d better not screw this up.”
Despite his bravado, a pang of unease gnawed at the edges of his mind. Hercules had proven to be more resilient, more resourceful than Hades had anticipated. The thought of failure, of spending another eternity in this wretched abyss, made his skin prickle with a heat that even he found uncomfortable.
But Hades tensed as he sensed someone, the Underworld seemed to close in around him, its oppressive weight pressing against his very essence. Hades let out a low growl, shaking his head as if to dispel the doubts creeping into his thoughts. “No,” he hissed to himself. “Who's lurking around here?”
