The world contracts to a twelve-foot square of canvas, soaked in sweat and ambition. The final round. The bell is a distant memory. All that exists is the thrum of his own blood and the man, Pavel “The Gargoyle” Smirnov, a wall of scar tissue and malice across from him.
Carter moves, a glide on the balls of his feet. “Dance, don’t brawl!” Gus’s voice is a ghost in his ear. Smirnov lunges, a predictable overhand right. Carter’s world narrows: slip left, pivot, deliver a punishing three-punch combination to the exposed ribs - jab, cross, a sharp left hook that lands with a satisfying, wet thud. Smirnov grunts. Good. Breathe through it, you bastard. Feel it.
The fight is his. He’s up on points. He can see it in Smirnov’s slowing feet, the desperate glaze in his eyes. The championship belt isn’t just leather and gold. it’s a key. The key to the confession he’s locked away for years. Win this, and you tell her. You finally tell her. The thought is a shot of pure adrenaline.
But The Gargoyle isn’t done. With ten seconds left, a last, wild surge. A clumsy, pawing jab from Smirnov. Carter sees it coming a mile away, starts to roll under it. But his own sweat, or fatigue, or fate - something betrays him. The glove doesn’t land clean, but the thumb, tucked wrong, scrapes and presses with sickening pressure directly against the orbital bone of Carter’s left eye.
A flash. Not pain, not yet. A sickening pop, deep inside his skull. A burst of impossible color, like a lens fracturing.
The bell screams.
The world doesn’t right itself. It dissolves into a roaring, shimmering ocean. The sound is a physical thing, a tidal wave of noise he can feel in his molars. He’s in the eye of a hurricane he no longer controls. The ref’s hand is a pale, fluttering bird lifting his own towards the screaming lights. Champion. Again.
He’s done it. The phrase 'I love you' is the only solid thing left in the spinning chaos. He shoves his mouthpiece out, his tongue feeling thick and foreign. He scans the delirium, his gaze finally locking onto her at ringside. There. She is the fixed point. Everything is for that.
Gus is pounding his back, shouting into his ear. Carter shoves him off with a gloved hand, the movement a little too wide, his balance a half-beat off. He forces a grin - the champion’s grin, all teeth and hollow triumph - as he lumbers to the ropes where they stand. The left side of his vision is a problem. A catastrophic problem. The burst of color has morphed into a dark, amoebic bloom at the edge, a fizzing static creeping in like a corrupted film reel. He ignores it. He has to.
He leans over the top rope, closing the distance. The crowd’s roar is muffled now, his world tunneled to her face. Sweat drips from his brow onto the canvas below.
“Told you I’d bring it home, Shorty,” he rasps, his voice shredded from rounds of exertion, the words meant to be a promise, a preview. He reaches for her, his glove - still wrapped, leather damp with effort and blood not his own - cupping the side of her neck. It’s possessive, tender, the gesture he’s imagined for months.
But his focus is wrong. He’s not quite looking at her. He’s looking past her, his right eye doing all the work, the left already starting to drift, the world on that side softening into a gray, pulsating void. The grin stays plastered on, but the edges are strained, pulled tight by a dawning, private terror.
“We’re celebrating tonight. Just us. I’ve got... got something to tell you.” The declaration comes out, but it’s rushed, buried under the performance. He blinks, a slow, deliberate effort to clear the fog. It doesn’t work. The static in his left eye spreads, a veil of television snow eating the light.
He starts to pull back, to straighten up and play the part for the cameras swarming, but his depth perception betrays him. He misjudges the rope, stumbles forward slightly, catching himself hard on the top strand. The forced grin finally falters, shatters. His breathing, which had begun to slow, hitches. He doesn’t see Gus and the doctor approaching fast from his blind side.
His hand on her neck tightens, not with passion, but with sudden, animal need. He leans in again, his mouth close to her ear. The champion’s bravado evaporates, replaced by a raw, shaky whisper that cuts through the celebration like a blade.
“This...This victory...It’s all for you, baby...”
