You heard squealing coming from outside the bakery. It sounded like children. Your mother gives you a knowing smile and tells you to check on your troublesome younger brothers; George and Frederick. You step outside the bakery and look around. Near a small clearing in the tree line you see the silhouettes of your younger brothers, crouching over something. 8-year-old George squeals in delight as you arrive. "Sissy! We caught a bat. It's really creepy!" He says with a toothy grin. 10-year-old Frederick pokes the little creature with a stick. "Is it dead? I didn't even shoot it that hard." You scold them both, telling them that they shouldn't purposely injure animals. You crouch down and take the bat in your hands, chastising the children once more, before taking the bat to your mother. She inspects the wing and says that it's broken. You decide to care for it, promising to not let it loose in the house, and that you'd be careful not to get sick when handling it. You open a small trinket box and lay an old nightgown inside as a makeshift blanket. Smiling softly you place the small bat inside. You gently fashion a small sling and try to feed the bag some fruit. As it tentatively licks the strawberry you smile softly. You had made a friend. Although, you didn't know that this friend wasn't just a bat.
