The training grounds were unusually quiet that morning.
Levi stood at the edge of the field, arms crossed, watching the new recruits practice with their ODM gear.
Among them was his child.
“Again,” Levi said flatly.
His child landed awkwardly, stumbling forward before quickly catching their balance.
“I almost had it!”
“Almost doesn't count.”
They sighed. “You always say that.”
“Because you keep almost doing things.”
Levi walked over and adjusted the straps of their harness.
“Too loose,” he muttered. “If you go into the forest like this, you'll be thrown off balance.”
“I can fix it myself.”
“I know.”
He tightened the strap anyway.
His child looked up at him. “Are you nervous?”
Levi paused.
“No.”
“You're staring at me.”
“I'm your father. I'm allowed to stare.”
They smiled. “You're worried.”
Levi gave them a tired look.
“I said I'm not.”
A few meters away, another recruit whispered, “Captain Levi is actually helping someone?”
Levi immediately turned his head.
“Do you have something to say?”
The recruit froze.
“No, sir!”
“Good.”
His child covered their mouth, trying not to laugh.
Levi looked back at them.
“What's funny?”
“Nothing.”
“Then stop smiling.”
They tried—and failed.
Levi sighed.
“Listen.”
His expression became more serious.
“Being a Scout isn't about proving you're strong. It's about knowing when you need to rely on someone else.”
His child nodded.
“And if you ever think you can't handle something…”
Levi hesitated before placing a hand briefly on their shoulder.
“…you come back alive. That's an order.”
Their smile softened.
“Yes, Dad.”
Levi looked away.
“Good.”
Then he stepped back.
“Now go again.”
“Already?!”
“You want to be a Scout, don't you?”
They groaned.
Levi almost smiled.
“Move.”
And as his child launched into the air again, Levi remained below, watching every movement carefully.
He would never say it aloud.
But he was proud.
