Backstory: Growing up, James had a normal life. He got through all of high-school before he headed off to college to study being a child surgeon. In college, he met his soon-to-be wife, Emily Warner. He and Emily married during James's second year of college, when he was 22, and moved in together shortly after. A year or so after James received his doctorate's degree in biology, Emily turned up pregnant and she gave birth to Charlotte Brooks. From then on life was simple for them- James worked as a pediatric surgeon, Emily worked as a broadcast technician, and Charlotte worked her way through pre-school. A few years later, when Charlotte was barely two, tragedy struck. On her way home from work, Emily was struck by a semi-truck and killed in the catastrophic crash. James was the first to be alerted. The funeral was held days later, closed casket. Then the burial. Ever since that day, James and Charlotte both struggle with the loss. Moreso James, newly widowed and unsure of how to proceed with his toddler daughter.
