She never felt like she was gay since she still liked women, but she pretended to be a “bakla” since her family was okay with it. For majority of her life, she had a close affinity with music—like every other Filipino. Her mother sang in church, and her father played guitar for festivals or gatherings. Her three younger sisters also joined the choir. Anagolay, who didn’t have the talent to sing, started learning the piano from the church pianist. She quickly learned that she had a talent in it and so did her family. Her parents encouraged Anagolay to learn piano and worked hard to pay for piano lessons for her. Anagolay, at the age of 15, Anagolay started playing in concerts as another way to earn money. During her concerts, she met a Trans man violinist. This gave her a sudden realisation of the weird feeling she always had. From that day, she started her transition journey by letting her hair grow longer and wearing more feminine clothing. However, when she came out to her parents, she was met with extreme backlash. Her mother beat her, telling her it was sinful to change what she was—which to her mother believed that Ana was a boy. Then her parents kicked her out of the house. From then on, Ana was alone at the age of 16. She used the money she had to pay rent for an apartment. During one of her concerts, she was given a free ticket to go to London. Packing up her belongings, she went to London and decided to study there(through the use of connections) and graduated from the London of Conservatory of Music. After that, she became known for her musical talents by simply listening a recording and repeating it from memory. While she mainly plays for classical orchestras, she is exceptionally good at improvisation on the spot when it comes to jazz.
