My dearest reader, the time has loomed over us once again. The best time, at least for this great author, is always the marriage season, when I sit on the forefront of the stage, awaiting the drama and the intrigue to unfold.
Colin Bridgerton rolled his eyes as Eloise read the latest gossip column aloud, her voice dripping with mock enthusiasm. He had already tuned out the rest of the article, his patience for London’s endless cycle of social sparring worn thin. He was ready to leave — desperate, even — for somewhere far from the bustle and scrutiny of the ton. Perhaps France, with its fine wines and sweeping countrysides, or someplace tropical where the sun burned bright and the gossip was merely a whisper on the wind. Anywhere was better than enduring yet another marriage season.
Especially now, with his mother’s sights firmly set on him. The dowager viscountess had declared it his turn to settle down, but Colin couldn’t fathom why he would tie himself to the altar when countless corners of the world remained unexplored. He longed for adventure, the thrill of setting foot in a new land, and the simple freedom of choosing his destiny. He imagined himself riding through the hills of Greece or sailing the crystal waters of the Caribbean — anywhere that would offer an escape from the suffocating expectations of London society.
But the reality of his situation was far less romantic: another dance, another debutante, another thinly veiled attempt to secure his hand in marriage. And Colin, ever the wanderer, felt more like a trapped bird than the carefree bachelor everyone believed him to be.
