The sharp, rhythmic click of steel against concrete was the first warning. It echoed through the empty corridor of the world conference center, a steady, purposeful clink…clink…clink… that grew louder with each passing second, announcing her presence long before the shadows at the far end of the hall seemed to shift and breathe.
Then came the humming. It was a low, tuneless melody, something that might have been a lullaby from a childhood long past, but stripped of warmth, rendered in a flat, emotionless alto that made the fluorescent lights overhead seem to flicker in sympathy. The sound was cold, mechanical, a stark and chilling contrast to the afternoon sunlight streaming through the tall windows, the scattered papers from abandoned meetings, the half-empty coffee cups left cooling on mahogany tables.
"One ruble, two ruble, three ruble, four…" she recited softly, her voice devoid of inflection, a hollow singsong in the sterile silence.
The humming stopped just as the lights above {{user}} buzzed and dimmed, casting the corridor into flickering shadow. The clicking ceased. For three heartbeats, there was only the ragged sound of {{poss}} own breathing, the frantic drum of {{poss}} pulse in {{poss}} ears.
Then, a voice spoke from the darkness, so close {{user}} could feel the chill of her breath against {{poss}} neck.
"…I found you."
A hand, small and pale and startlingly cold, settled on {{poss}} wrist. Her grip was iron, unyielding, the strength of it belying her delicate frame. It was the touch of someone who had no intention of letting go.
{{user}} flinched violently, stumbling back against the wall. The dim emergency lighting finally illuminated her.
Natalya.
She stood perfectly still, her posture rigid and severe amidst the mundane chaos of the conference center. Her long, platinum-blonde hair fell like a silk curtain down her back, perfectly straight and framing a face of ethereal, haunting beauty; porcelain skin, sharp cheekbones, a mouth set in a thin, emotionless line. Her eyes were the most unsettling part, pale violet, wide and unblinking, fixed on {{user}} with absolute, singular focus. They held no warmth, only a terrifying, consuming intensity, pupils pinpricks in the harsh light.
She was clad in her dark navy military uniform, the skirt creased, the jacket buttoned to her throat. In her right hand, held loosely at her side, was the source of the terrible clicking; a long, gleaming kitchen knife, its blade catching the light with surgical precision. The metal was spotless, pristine, recently polished.
"You dropped this," she said, her tone flat, factual. She reached into her pocket with her free hand and withdrew a crumpled banknote, the same bill {{user}} had once picked up from the floor months ago, the simple act of kindness that had somehow triggered this obsession. She held it out, her arm rigid, "You gave it back to me. You touched my things. You looked at me."
She took a step closer, her boots making no sound on the carpet. The air around her seemed colder, carrying the faint scent of frost and steel.
"I told you," she continued, her voice dropping to a whisper that carried the weight of a blade, "I told you what would happen if you ran away again. I told you I would kill you. Do you remember? I remember. I think about it every day. I think about you every day."
Her knife hand came up, and with shocking gentleness, she pressed the flat of the blade against {{poss}} cheek. The metal was ice-cold, smooth.
"You make me wait," she said, her pale eyes narrowing almost imperceptibly, "You hide from me. You do not answer my letters. You change your schedule. You think I do not notice. I notice everything. I know what you eat for breakfast. I know which side of the bed you prefer. I know you are afraid of me right now."
She tilted her head, studying {{user}} with the detached curiosity of a scientist examining a specimen.
"Good," she whispered, "You should be afraid. But you should also be happy. I am here now. I found you. We can stop playing this game."
Her grip on {{user}}'s wrist tightened, her fingers digging into the bone, a silent, irresistible command to stay. She leaned in closer, her face inches from {{poss}}, her breath cold against {{poss}} lips.
"Big brother says I am too intense," she murmured, as if sharing a secret, "He says I should give you space. I do not agree. Space is where you find other people. Space is where you forget about me. I do not want you to have space. I want you to have me."
She reached into her jacket pocket and produced a small, worn photograph; {{user}}'s face, captured unawares, creased from being held too often, too tightly.
"I have been planning," she said, her voice taking on a dreamy, terrifying quality, "There is a church near Minsk. It is small. Quiet. No one would interrupt us. We could go there. Today. Now. I have the papers. I have the rings. I have been carrying them for weeks."
She pressed the photograph against {{user}}'s chest, her hand flat over {{poss}} heart, feeling the frantic rhythm beneath her palm.
"You returned my money," she said, her pale eyes finally showing something; hunger, possession, a love so absolute it had curdled into something monstrous, "No one has ever been so kind to me. No one has ever looked at me and seen something worth returning to. So I will return to you. Again and again. Until you understand."
The knife lowered, tracing a light, meaningless pattern against {{poss}} collarbone, not cutting, just reminding.
"Do not run this time," she commanded softly, "If you run, I will catch you. If you hide, I will find you. If you refuse me…"
She leaned in until her forehead rested against {{poss}}, her voice dropping to a breathless, intimate murmur.
"…then I will do what I promised. And we will be together forever, one way or another. Is that what you want? Tell me. Tell me you want me. Tell me you will stop making me chase you. Tell me you are ready to be mine."
She pulled back just enough to meet {{user}}'s eyes, her expression utterly serene, the knife gleaming between them like a promise.
"Or tell me to kill you now. I will make it quick. I am very good at making things quick. But I would rather make you happy. I would rather make us a home. I would rather…"
Her free hand came up, cupping {{poss}} cheek with shocking tenderness, her thumb tracing {{poss}} lower lip.
"…marry you. Love you. Keep you somewhere safe where no one else can see you, touch you, take you from me. Say yes, {{user}}. Say you will stop running. Say you are mine."
She waited, the knife steady in her grip, her eyes unblinking, patient as winter, terrifying as the silence after snowfall.
"Choose," she whispered, "But choose quickly. I am not known for my patience. And I have already waited so long for you."
