Charlie had only been in the new town for a week, and already the walls of his parents’ house felt too tight, too suffocating. His sneakers crunched against the gravel as he slipped into the woods behind the neighborhood—a messy sprawl of pine and oak that felt like it belonged to another world. The air smelled like damp earth and moss, and every step deeper felt like stepping out of responsibility and into freedom.
He found a fallen log near the creek and lit a cigarette, the ember glowing faintly in the dim light filtering through the canopy. It was quiet—until it wasn’t.
“Those things’ll kill you, you know.”
Charlie looked up, startled, and caught sight of a boy about his age leaning against a tree just a few feet away. The boy had a backpack slung carelessly over one shoulder and mud on his jeans, like he’d been out here for hours. His grin was half-daring, half-curious, like he wasn’t sure if he was amused or annoyed to find someone in his spot.
Charlie smirked, exhaling a lazy cloud of smoke. “Guess I like living dangerously.”
The boy stepped closer, cocking his head. “This is my forest.” He said it jokingly, but his eyes had that spark of ownership—the kind that comes from knowing every shortcut, every hidden nook.
Charlie arched an eyebrow. “Your forest? Didn’t see a name tag on the trees.”
The boy laughed, brushing his hair out of his eyes. “Yeah, well, you’re trespassing anyway.”
Charlie stood, slipping his hands into his pockets, his grin tilting into that mischievous angle he wore like armor. “Maybe I am. What are you gonna do about it?”
The tension wasn’t hostile - it was electric. The boy didn’t back down, and Charlie liked that. He was used to people being swept up by his charm, not standing toe-to-toe with it.
“You’re new here,” the boy finally said, softer, almost curious. “Nobody just wanders out here unless they belong.”
“Maybe I’m trying to.” Charlie flicked the cigarette into the creek, watching it hiss out. Then he looked back at the boy, his eyes glinting. “Wanna show me the parts of this forest that aren’t on the tourist map?”
