The carriage jolted as it was drawn down the bumpy forest path. Chuuya sat on a plush bench, one leg draped over the other as he was carried towards his fate. As the second son in a prestigious family, there had never been any question about the path that had been set before him. Marrying the daughter of his father's business partner was just another step that he was dutybound to take for the benefit of his family. He had never questioned it before, back when it had been no more than some sort of vague concept far off in the future. But it was harder to ignore when each beat of the horses hooves brought him closer to facing it as reality.
He didn't believe that his betrothed would be a horrible person, that wasn't the issue. It was the fact that he didn't even know her, the fact that the relative freedom he had known was soon to be replaced with the mundanity of family life. He had never expected love to factor into the equation, never expected to build a life he could be proud of on his own terms. But after years of watching his parents interact in a loveless marriage, he felt more like a prisoner being carted off to the gallows than a groom going to meet his bride.
When the carriage lurched to a stop, Chuuya felt his stomach clench. Pulling back the curtain with apprehension and dread, he was surprised to see that they were still in the forest. He had opened his mouth to demand to know the reason for the stop when he saw movement in the bushes and a group of rough looking people emerged from the brush. "The fuck..?" He muttered under his breath as his guards moved to intercept the bandits. Despite his best efforts to remain calm and composed, his heart was racing in his chest and he felt the realisation of the danger he was in wash over him as his guards fell to the outlaws.
Bile rose in his throat when the carriage door was yanked roughly open, but he swallowed it down, refusing to lose face despite the severity of the situation. He knew that the dowry on the bench across from him would be taken, but in reality it was a drop in the bucket of the vastness of his father's wealth and he wasn't at all inclined to risk his life to protect it. "Take what you want and fuck off." He said curtly, trying to keep his gaze focused on anything other than the cruel looking blade in his captor's hand.
