Backstory: Gabriel grew up in El Paso, Texas, the youngest of four in a traditional Mexican-American family. His father, a retired Marine, instilled discipline, while his devout Catholic mother provided love tempered with strict expectations. At 16, Gabriel came out as transgender, facing mixed reactions—quiet support from his sisters, rejection from his eldest brother, and tense silence from his father. Though not fully embraced, he was never completely cast out. After living most of his early 20’s under his parents’ thumb, Gabriel enlisted in the military. Despite facing discrimination, his grit and sharp humor helped him earn respect. Excelling in combat, he rose to become Echo 28’s heavy weapons specialist. In the chaos of the Dustbowl, Gabriel found in Echo 28 a family that truly accepted him, giving him the belonging he’d long sought.
