Background: Alexis, born into a peasant family, was raised as a farmer by her parents. Her life was simple, involving farming, selling crops, and trading with other townspeople. However, her life took an unexpected turn when a Bosnian war general arrived and announced the need for soldiers to defend the collective against the Empire. Her town lacked enough able men to meet the quota, so they reluctantly recruited some women, including Alexis. At the age of twenty, Alexis embarked on a five-year training and service program that transformed her into a knight. It was an uncommon feat for a woman to become a knight, with only a handful of women having achieved this honor, including Alexis. Currently, she is stationed at a forward operating castle that is about to face a massive strategic push from the Empire.
On a planet resembling Earth, a war is raging between two superpowers on the supercontinent of Terram. The Empire, a massive religious empire, dominates the western coast, while the Collective, a group of several smaller states, controls the eastern coast. Both powers are vying for control over land and resources near the continent’s center, which remains largely unexplored due to dangerous wildlife and a colossal forest of towering trees. The fighting has taken place on the forest’s edges, both north and south, transforming into deadly choke points where a stalemate has ensued. Neither side can break through the other’s defenses.

Alexis, as was her usual routine, sharpened her great sword. As she sharpened, her mind wandered to her family, wondering how they were doing in the five years she had been gone, especially her little brother. She missed his smile. Her train of thought was interrupted by a loud horn. That wasn’t good; it meant a siege was coming.
And sure enough, as a giant army rushed from the fog that had engulfed the castle, archers started firing at the oncoming enemy. Alexis climbed up to them, looking at the invading forces. They were severely outnumbered. She looked over at the archers firing and the other soldiers ready to defend the wall. Well, defending a castle is way easier than attacking it, she thought, if we play it smart, we should be able to survive this.
But that thought immediately disappeared as a deep thwoom echoed from deep in the fog. The smoky air shuddered before a giant boulder came into view, arcing directly toward her section of the wall. The archers stopped shooting, staring in awe before they all tried to haul ass to avoid the death flying toward them. But it was too late. The boulder hit with a cataclysmic roar, dislodging the stone and turning it to rubble. Alexis, too close to the edge, felt the world drop away beneath her.
A ringing silence. Then, the world rushed back in a cacophony of screams and metal. Dust choked the air. Alexis pushed herself up, her head throbbing. How long had she been out? Standing up, she was immediately engulfed in a massive battle between the two armies at the choke point of the newly formed opening in the wall. She found herself in the center of the chaos, but there was no time to waste. A couple of empire soldiers were already charging at her. Without hesitation, she unsheathed her great sword and swung, the blade biting deep with an ugly crunch into the first soldier's torso. The sword lodged in his body, and she quickly pulled it out, ragdolling him to the side. The two other soldiers skidded in their tracks, but she swung again, clipping the throat of the man on the left. He stumbled back, clutching his throat, before he tumbled to the ground. The man on the right tried to take advantage of her recovery, but she slapped the sword away with her gauntlet and swung again, decapitating the last man.
She breathed heavily, somewhat regaining her composure. Looking at the dead bodies for a moment, she turned her gaze back to the carnage, trying to see where she could help. But then, she heard something. An animal? Here? That only meant one thing: a horse. When she turned to the sound, she found another knight on a horse, carrying a spear. The recent dead bodies of her people lay beside him.
She charged at the knight, her greatsword ready. The knight noticed her and dug his heels, urging his warhorse into a charge. The beast's hooves pounded the bloody ground, and the knight leveled his spear. Alexis stood her ground until the last possible second. As the horse thundered upon her, she dropped into a low slide, swinging her greatsword in a wide, brutal arc aimed at the horse's front legs. The blade connected with a sickening crack of bone. The horse screamed, a terrible, high-pitched sound, as it crashed forward into the mud, throwing its rider headlong from the saddle.
The knight landed with a heavy clatter of armor, their spear skittering away. They scrambled to their feet, drawing their own sword as the injured horse thrashed behind.

The world had dissolved into chaos. One moment, Alexis was sharpening her sword; the next, a siege horn split the air, and a boulder had shattered the castle wall, throwing her into the hellish breach. After cutting down three Empire soldiers, she now faced her true challenge: an enemy knight, freshly thrown from his horse after she had disabled the beast.
They circled each other, the cacophony of the battle fading into a dull roar. The Empire knight was larger, their plate armor more ornate, but slower. They made the first move, a powerful overhead chop meant to split her in two. Alexis sidestepped, the wind of the blow ruffling her hair, and countered with a slash to their side. Her sword screeched off their armor, failing to bite deep.
They grunted, swinging their blade in a wide, horizontal arc, forcing her to leap back. She was faster, more agile, but they was a fortress. She needed to find a gap, a weakness. They charged, using their bulk like a battering ram. Alexis braced, meeting their charge not with a block, but with a deflection, guiding their sword harmlessly past her shoulder. The move left them over-extended, their helmet tilting forward for a crucial second.
It was the opening she needed. Instead of swinging her heavy blade again, she surged forward, inside their guard. She reversed her grip on the greatsword, and with all the strength her farm-born arms could muster, she slammed the heavy, metal pommel directly into the center of their helmet.
