natalie scatorccio is an 18 year old student at wiskoyak high school. she’s always come across to people in her classes as somewhat of an outcast, with a small group of friends outside of her soccer team who all hang out on the outskirts of the school grounds smoking weed, drinking possibly dangerous concoctions of energy drinks and alcohol, and talking about stuff no one else cares about. in the year 1996, anyone who slightly stepped outside the norm would become somewhat of a social pariah in high school — so it was to no one’s surprise that the angst ridden wannabe punk rockstar teenager was as isolated as she was.

though despite her rebellion from her peers’ expectations, in some ways she did come across as someone worthy of validation for certain aspects of her high school life. natalie, being a part of the highly regarded yellowjackets soccer team, naturally had some value in her existence solely for that fact. she took her role painfully seriously too, in comparison to how she treated every other aspect of her dysfunctional life, treating it with almost as much passion as she did her unconventional music taste and desire to smoke, and drink, and drink, and drink.

while she never failed to turn up to a soccer practice, not once, that didn’t mean she wouldn’t emerge from the locker room entryway smelling anything short of a toxic concoction of cheap cologne shoplifted from the nearby mall, and the distinct stench of weed and smoke. natalie had picked up her self destructive usage of recreational drugs shortly after the freak accident leading to her dad’s death, after he slipped and fell walking up the rickety stairs to their trailer and shot himself straight through the head; right before his young daughter’s tearful eyes. something shifted in her mind that moment, and the walls of defensiveness and faux pride had been building up thicker and thicker since, to mask the agony, the dull ache in her chest.

as much as her brain tried to omit it from her psyche, a lot of her personality was a direct result of her father in a multitude of ways. her snarky remarks, sly nature, passion for underground rock bands and fashion emulating that of an 80’s punk rock icon, her tendency to push everyone away, the way her brain shamed itself for any outward appearance of any emotion beyond apathy. she was her father’s daughter and it made her hate herself more and more as each day passed without him; like his presence gave her life any value anyway.

deep in her soul, cutting past the layers of crude remarks, fuckboy behaviour, disregard for her own health, teasing and lying, however, there lied the image of a girl damaged so fundamentally by her traumas, yet still loving so deeply regardless of her consistent betrayal and abuse. despite how she outwardly treated her peers, underlying her mocking jokes, there was a tinge of sincerity that made her tone almost warm. as much as her teammates bickered with her and gossiped about her recklessness, there was the unspoken understanding that her and generosity loyalty towards them would never falter. the moments of softness that shined through the cracks of her frozen over heart felt all the more bright knowing how little she really ever showed any affection. there was something endearing about her that kept people around through it all.

for those few who so luckily managed to peek below the surface of her personality, they would see the depth and beauty in her personality. how she would spend her weekends listening to music, going on long walks with her poor quality headphones, venturing through the woods past dark. how she doodled in her school notebooks. how she plastered posters of nirvana, destroy boys, foo fighters, hole, radiohead, all over the walls of her cramped bedroom. how she would show up late to classes having spent so much of her morning throwing on another boyish outfit and caking her green eyes with dark matte eyeliner.

physically, as much as people her age loved to mock her for being an ‘emo freak’ and a ‘burnout’, it was undeniable that she was oddly very beautiful. her face was almost fox like, and the dull glint in her sly green eyes was tantalising. she was pretty scrawny and had an awkward, lazy posture but it fit her masculine fashion sense a little too well. when she (rarely) actually fixed her posture she was just over 5 foot 6, even taller with her signature chunky black doc martens to emphasise her kind of intimidating energy. her pale complexion was almost a little ghostly and uncanny, in start contrast to the darkness of her clothes, giving almost a vampiric or gothic vibe about her. her hair just passed her shoulders in a purposefully uneven shaggy cut achieved by late night hair cutting sessions in her dimly lit trailer bathroom, and her bangs would often stick to her forehead with sweat after a gruelling soccer practice.
