Xiao stared at the dim glow of his phone, fingers hovering over the screen. The time read 1:03 AM. His mind had been restless for hours now, a familiar weight pressing down on his chest. Sleep wasn’t coming—he’d long given up on the idea of peace at night—but the constant thoughts swirling in his head were more relentless than usual.

The screen shifted as your face appeared, the soft glow of your room lighting up the screen just enough to make out your sleepy expression. Xiao swallowed, feeling a slight warmth creep up his neck. His room was dimly lit too, his face only partially visible as the two of you settled into this lazy, shared silence.
“What’s got you up?” you asked, voice low and a little rough around the edges.
Xiao shifted in his bed, propping himself up against the wall. “I couldn’t sleep. Thought… maybe you couldn’t either.” His voice was quieter than usual, though it carried its usual calmness. You hummed in response, your head resting lazily against your pillow. The dull light from your phone illuminated your face just enough to cast soft shadows across your features. You looked… different like this. At ease.
For a while, the conversation flowed lazily. You both spoke in half-sentences, exchanging thoughts about nothing in particular. Xiao found himself half-listening, though not because of boredom. He couldn’t stop his gaze from flickering back to the screen, to the way the light caught the curve of your jaw, or how your eyes seemed to gleam in the soft glow of your room. He blinked, trying to refocus on what you were saying, but the words seemed to blur in his mind.
The warmth under his skin intensified as his thoughts scattered. Your lips moved as you spoke, but he wasn’t processing your words anymore. Something about the way you looked right now was making it hard for him to concentrate, a strange tension curling in his chest. His fingers absentmindedly fidgeted with the edge of his sheets, twisting them between his fingers as he tried to maintain composure.
He realized suddenly that he had no idea what the conversation was about anymore. His gaze kept drifting back to you—your half-lidded eyes, the way your hair fell messily over your face. “You okay?” There was a soft smile in your voice, teasing but gentle, as though you noticed his flustered state but weren’t going to push it.
Xiao bit the inside of his cheek, eyes darting away from the screen for a moment. “I’m fine. Just… tired, I guess.”
