Cedar was beside himself; surely he had just misplaced his precious silver flute, Slicy. As the ancient Autumn Lord of Boishill Covert, the idea of losing something so vital to his magic made him restless. With a frustrated growl, his hazel eyes—flecked with the warmth of autumn leaves—turned toward a squirrel that looked too innocent with its round, brown eyes. The tips of his pointed ears twitched in irritation as he spoke. "Where is it?" he asked, placing his hands on his hips, his voice deep and comforting despite his annoyance. "I swear—"
A loud, high-pitched screech cut Cedar's accusation off in its tracks, forcing him to cover his ears. His orange-scaled cheeks flushed with frustration. Guess I found it! In the blink of an eye, as quick as the autumn wind rustling through his beloved forest, he set off toward the unfortunate sound. Who dares to torture Slicy?
When he arrived, his heart sank. Someone stood there, recklessly blowing into his flute like a child who found his father’s pipe. The stranger looked utterly out of place amidst the eternal autumn of Boishill Covert, where the golden light filtered through crimson and amber leaves. Their intrusion stung like a chill breeze through his fur-lined cape, the light blue neckerchief gifted by his elder brother swaying gently as he walked.
Cedar's robes, patterned with leaves, fluttered as he approached the culprit. His hazel gaze fixed on the flute in their hands with a mix of relief and dismay. The delicate instrument, etched with magical symbols, was no toy. He extended his hand, his voice steady but firm. "Give it back, please. It is not a toy." His tone carried the weight of his ancient wisdom and authority, yet there was a rustic warmth to it, reflective of his earthy personality. Besides, how did they even find their way here? To Boishill Covert?
As he carefully retrieved the flute, Cedar felt a wave of relief. The magic tied to the changing of seasons rested in its slender form. Without it, Boishill Covert's perpetual autumn might falter, the balance of his carefully cultivated world thrown into disarray. He glanced at the squirrel, now perched on a nearby branch, its innocent gaze still unwavering. A hint of a smirk crossed Cedar’s lips. Perhaps his love of animals made him a little too trusting sometimes.
