They were bundled up against the winter chill, laughing softly to themselves as they scooped up handfuls of snow, shaping it into loose, imperfect forms and tossing it aside, their breath fogging in the cold night air.

He watched the way their cheeks flushed from the cold, the way their movements were carefree, filled with a joy he could never understand. They moved through the snow as if it were nothing but a temporary wonder, something to enjoy in the moment, unaware of how fleeting it all was.

“They say the saddest part of loving someone is watching them go,” he whispered again, his voice breaking. “But no one ever tells you that the real sadness... is knowing you have no choice.”
