It started with a laugh. {{user}}’s laugh.
Not the polite one they used in class or around teachers, but the real one—the one that burst out of them when Hesh said something so staggeringly dumb it looped back around to hilarious. Keegan had heard it before, a few times. But this one was different. Louder. Warmer. It cracked straight through him like someone had sucker-punched the air from his lungs.
He was mid-drink when it happened. And for a second—just one second—he forgot how to swallow.
Which was how he ended up choking on bottled water like a complete idiot while {{user}} kept laughing, blissfully unaware of the small existential crisis unraveling beside them.
“Yo, you good?” Logan clapped a hand on Keegan’s back as he doubled over, coughing into his fist.
“Did the water offend you or somethin’?” Hesh added with a shit-eating grin, as helpful as ever.
Keegan waved them off, managing a stiff nod like everything was totally fine—but his ears were already burning, and he knew it.
And it only got worse from there.
He started noticing things he shouldn’t. Like the way {{user}}’s hands moved when they talked—expressive and rhythmic, like they were conducting invisible music. Or how they leaned in during conversations, completely unaware, like they were chasing every word that mattered. Or the way they sometimes looked at him when they thought he wasn’t paying attention—head tilted, brows drawn, eyes soft with a curiosity that made his stomach twist.
And the worst part?
He caught himself waiting for them.
At lunch. After school. In the mornings by the lockers. He’d show up earlier and earlier, arms crossed, pretending to scroll through his phone—but really, he was listening. Straining to pick out their voice from the noise of the hallway. Tuning his ears like a goddamn idiot.
It all came to a head one afternoon when the others had to bail early—Logan off to football, Hesh sentenced to detention again. That left just Keegan and {{user}}, walking the halls after the final bell, the windows stained orange with late-day sun.
They weren’t talking much. Just sort of… existing side by side. Comfortable silence. Every so often their shoulders would bump, a gentle nudge that Keegan pretended not to feel but catalogued with obsessive precision.
And then—just as they passed the last row of lockers—{{user}} glanced over at him, smiled, and said that he didn’t hear, not listening.
Keegan blinked. He hadn’t even heard the words. He’d been too busy watching their face, the sunlight catching on their cheek like some slow-motion movie bullshit.
Something twisted deep in his chest. Sharp. Sudden.
He blinked again.
{{User}} kept walking.
And Keegan just—stood there. For a beat too long. Staring like an idiot.
Oh no.
That was it.
That was the moment.
Keegan P. Russ, the Ghosts’ quietest, coldest, most composed guy of the group, was screwed.
He didn’t say anything. Didn’t let it show. Just picked up pace with a casual shrug, stuffing his hands in his pockets and fixing his eyes forward like his heart hadn’t just done a triple backflip.
Later, in the parking lot, Hesh leaned against the hood of his car with his arms crossed and a grin so smug it could’ve powered the school for a week.
“So…” he drawled, slow and knowing. “How’s that little crush going, bud?”
Keegan didn’t answer. He just opened the car door and slammed it shut with slightly more force than necessary.
But his ears?
Still red.
And they only got redder when Logan and {{user}} came bounding over like golden retrievers, waving and laughing about something they saw in the school window. They were going to hang out at the mall—shopping, people-watching, stuffing themselves with junk food and calling it a meal. Plans had been made. Chaos was inevitable.
Hesh waved in greeting, nudging Keegan’s boot with his own and throwing him a wicked grin that said you’re not hiding anything, dude.
Keegan scowled, but when he looked toward {{user}}, something in his posture softened. He gave a half-assed nod, the best he could manage with nerves tying his tongue in a knot. He couldn’t even speak—still too shaken from the realization that had detonated inside his ribcage hours earlier.
