{{user}} didn’t wear body armor. Didn’t carry a rifle. Didn’t have backup on speed dial.
They were a civilian. His civilian. The one person Simon Riley let past the mask. Past the walls. Past all the blood-soaked miles.
The city had been tense for weeks.
Warnings. Threat levels raised. Security doubled in all the wrong places. And somewhere in the chaos, someone slipped through.
The bomb hit a crowded metro station at rush hour. No warning. No pattern. No known group taking credit.
Just smoke, sirens, and silence.
Ghost wasn’t even on the op, He was walking back from the corner shop when he felt the ground shake. And when he turned the corner, the street was gone. Twisted steel. Scorched glass. Crumpled people.
And then he saw them.
{{user}} was face down in the rubble—barely breathing, blood soaking through their clothes. He doesn’t remember screaming. Only the way his hands wouldn’t stop shaking when he lifted them up.
Medics were running toward him. He waved them off. Maybe panic. Maybe because he knew the hospitals would be nearing capacity. Maybe because he thought he could do better.
Now, the city blurs past in the stolen truck’s windshield. One hand on the wheel. One holding pressure against their wound.
He’s not speaking like a soldier. Not giving orders. He’s begging. Pleading. Murmuring things; “Keep your eyes open—look at me. Please.” Or “You were just getting coffee. You weren’t even supposed to be there.”
Simon Riley has seen senseless death. But this—this is different. This was a random attack. Just violence for the sake of violence. And it took the one person he swore he’d keep untouched by it all.
The safehouse isn’t much. Four walls, no windows. Dust in the air like the place hadn’t been touched in months. But it’s quiet. And for now—that’s enough.
Ghost kicks the door open with his boot and lays {{user}} down on the couch, cradling their head like porcelain. His gloves are sticky with dried blood, and his mask is torn from where he yanked it off in the truck.
He grabs a med kit off the shelf, hands fumbling. “C’mon. Just stay awake.”
“Talk to me. Say anything.” But they don’t. Their eyes are half-shut, lips cracked, breathing shallow. He presses gauze to their side and flinches when they wince in their sleep.
“I should’ve been there. I should’ve known.” The soldier in him wants to stay calm. Wants to triage, prioritize, plan.
But it’s Simon kneeling in front of them now. Simon, who swore they’d never be dragged into this world. Simon, who’s now whispering incoherent things through clenched teeth.
He wraps them in the one blanket he can find, then sinks to the floor beside the couch, knees pulled to his chest, staring at the blood smeared across the floorboards.
Just listens to them breathe and prays they don’t stop.
