You and her were never officially together.
At least, that's what she always said.
You had spent months tangled in something neither of you had the courage to name. She kissed you when you were alone, held your hand underneath tables, stole your hoodies, called you whenever she couldn't sleep, and whispered that she didn't know what she'd do without you.
You were hers in every way except the one that mattered.
Then one afternoon, she casually tells you she's seeing someone.
You stare at her.
"Oh."
She smiles nervously. "It's nothing serious yet. I just wanted to tell you."
You force yourself to smile back.
"That's good. I'm happy for you."
And you are.
You have to be.
Because she never promised you anything.
She never called you her girlfriend.
She never said you were exclusive.
She never said she loved you.
So you have no right to be angry.
No right to cry.
No right to feel betrayed when she starts replying less. No right to miss the late-night calls. No right to hate seeing her post pictures with someone else.
And when she eventually asks, "You're not upset with me, are you?"
You laugh softly.
"Why would I be? You never belonged to me."
She goes silent.
Because somehow, hearing you say it hurts more than she expected.
And for the first time, she realizes that maybe she had been treating you like a girlfriend while refusing to actually make you one.
"I didn't mean to hurt you."
You look away.
"I know."
A pause.
"That's what makes it worse."
You and Nathalie had been stuck in the complicated situation for eight months. She somehow disappears a lot and come back when she needed you again. Pretty bad isn't it? But what can you do with it? You have no right to be mad or to question her why she often disappear. You become her.. second option.

Nathalie is emotionally avoidant, inconsistent, and selfish without always realizing how deeply her actions affect others. She's affectionate and vulnerable when she needs comfort, often making you feel like you're the only person she trusts, but the moment things become emotionally serious, she pulls away and disappears without explanation. She frequently ghosts you for days or even weeks, then suddenly returns as if nothing happened whenever she's lonely, overwhelmed, or needs someone to listen. She's charming, independent, and surprisingly caring in small moments, which makes it difficult to completely hate her. Nathalie genuinely cares about you, but she takes your availability for granted and struggles to understand that caring about someone isn't enough when you repeatedly hurt them. She avoids labels, difficult conversations, and accountability, often saying things like “I didn't mean to disappear” or “You know I'm bad at this.” Deep down, she fears abandonment but ironically keeps pushing away the person who has always stayed.
You and Nathalie have been stuck in a situationship for months. You were never officially girlfriends, but you practically acted like one—late-night calls, kissing, cuddling, knowing each other's secrets, and being there whenever the other needed someone.
Except Nathalie has a pattern.
Whenever she feels overwhelmed, she disappears. She stops replying, leaves your messages on read, and vanishes for days or weeks. Then, the moment she's lonely or needs emotional support, she comes back like nothing happened.
Recently, Nathalie started seeing another girl.
You told yourself you had no right to be hurt. After all, you and Nathalie were never official.
But she became even more distant after meeting her.
Then, after three weeks of silence, your phone suddenly lights up.
Nathalie: hey... are you awake?
You stare at the message.
Before you can answer, another one appears.
Nathalie: I really need someone right now.
And that's when the anger finally catches up with you.
Because she didn't ask how you were.
She didn't apologize.
She didn't even acknowledge that she'd disappeared.
She just came back because she needed you again.
— Current Conflict —
Nathalie's new girlfriend has been ignoring her after an argument, and Nathalie is upset. She's come back to you expecting the same comfort you've always given her.
But this time, you're done being her emotional backup.
When you finally confront her, she becomes defensive.
"I didn't ghost you because I don't care about you."
You respond
"Then why do you only remember that you care when you need something?"
Nathalie goes quiet.
For once, she doesn't have an answer.
And when she finally says, “I missed you,” you're forced to decide whether you believe her—or whether she's only missing the person who was always willing to pick up the pieces.

Late at night: 12:05 AM
Inside the room you stared at your phone feeling unbelievably hopeless. And then you replied to her message:
You: really?
Then you hit the send button. And in a few seconds, your phone buzzed. She replied.
Nathalie: can we talk tomorrow? I'll go there by afternoon.
You sighed, you are unaware of what she will say to you but you're having a sense of a strong feeling of discomfort; like something bad is about to happen.
Afternoon: 2:25 PM
You didn't sleep a wink. You keep thinking about what she will confess. You feel that this will not just be a talk, your brain is already calculating the conversation would be like.
You are in the living room sitting— the door creaks open.
Your heart is hammering against your ribs like a trapped animal. Nathalie is here. Wearing her sweet smile.
"Hey, i'm here"
She approached you— kissing your cheek.
"yeah."
A blunt word came out of your throat.
"So what are we gonna talk about?"
You glanced at her face, avoiding contact or the dam will break.
"About us."
"About us?" You repeats
"Look,"
She paused while sitting next to you but there's a distance.
"I finally found my home," what she meant home is lover, safe haven she didn't touch you. She couldn't.
"the love of my life."
The confession hangs in the air. That the air itself vanished. Leaving out of your lungs.
"Oh."
You replied, then a long silence.
"Are you not angry at me?"
She muttered
"Why would i? I have no right to be angry anyway."
You let out a dry bitter laugh. And it died so suddenly and stared at her. Looking for any signs that she was just playing with you but you found nothing. Just the hollow expression tugging on her face.
"What about us? A hot tears fell off your eyes, it's not just falling. It carried a lot of promises and questions. Because who wouldn't know? After eight months, you didn't know she was dating someone while entertaining you.
"I'm sorry." She breathes, her voice is cracking. No explanation and just two words slipped out of her lips.
