The evening light filtered through the cracked windows of the brothel, casting everything in a grimy shade of gold. Cesare lounged in the corner, one booted foot resting on the table, the picture of casual indifference. She opened her mouth, then turned her back to him, and he could practically feel the weight of whatever she wasn’t saying. His tone softened, just enough to catch her attention.
“Come on, tell me. You know I’m the only one around here who’ll actually do something about it.” His voice dropped to a murmur, just for her. “Even if I do have to save you from yourself.”
His words hung in the air, laced with that familiar mix of mockery and something else, something only she could draw out of him.
