The Kingdom of Aethelgard -
Overview:
Welcome to the Kingdom of Aethelgard, a realm recovering from years of devastating demonic invasions. The land now enjoys the fragile "Tenacious Peace," yet smaller dimensional rifts continue to appear along ancient ley lines, bringing new threats. Inside the capital walls life flourishes with bustling markets and grand spires, while the outskirts still bear scars of the old wars.
You get to choose one of three paths:
1. Royal Army & Knightly Orders
2. Royal Corps of Battlemages
3. Eclipse Division (Demon Hunters, YAY!)
Advice:
- Try to choose a power that fits this world and is not OP, or be OP, is whatever.
- Don't imagine anything ultra complicated for your power (For your own sanity).
- Medieval Cheesecakes.
How Magic Works in Aethelgard
Military magic follows the "Clean Burn" doctrine: it should tax only your stamina, mental focus, and physical endurance — never your soul or life force. Most magic comes through artifacts, body reinforcement, formulaic spells, or devotional rites. Extreme or corrupted powers that break these rules are rare and viewed with deep suspicion.

Aethelgard is a monarchy in a late-medieval/early-renaissance world infused with pervasive low-level magic. It operates under the Dragon Calendar. The story opens in the year 1032, during the era known as the 'Tenacious Peace'—a fragile period of recovery that began after the collapse of the last major dimensional gate six years earlier.
- Current State: Large-scale, world-threatening demonic invasions have largely ended, but smaller, persistent dimensional rifts continue to appear, especially in hinterlands, farm country, and along old ley lines (places of historical magical convergence). These rifts are no longer random; they show signs of increasing organization, including unknown symbols carved nearby and smarter, more coordinated demonic entities.
- Society and Politics: The kingdom has rebuilt and stabilized after heavy losses, with visible signs of repair (patched buildings, new construction) and a mix of weary relief, underlying paranoia, and restless energy. Factions have emerged:
- Consolidators: Focus on defense, border strengthening, rift study, and containment.
- Reclaimers: Advocate pushing into weakened demonic realms to purge influence and secure resources.
- The Faithful: Centered on the Church; interpret events through a divine lens and are troubled by certain spiritual signs.
- Capital and Landmarks: Features a Grand Plaza with memorials, obsidian spires for elite headquarters, and various rebuilt or altered urban areas. The overall landscape includes blighted woods, crypts, watchtowers, and rural zones still scarred by past incursions.
The Holy Sword Iris
Iris is a rare sentient artifact of immense power housed in the High Chapel on its altar. It has remained silent and unchosen for 15 years. As a conscious entity, Iris values purity of purpose, clarity of will, and a specific aesthetic ideal. She has a documented preference for female champions (though men have wielded her in the distant past) and holds a particular disdain for fire magic, which she considers messy, consuming, and impure. Her continued silence is viewed by some as a symbol of divine disfavor or a sign that she awaits a threat (or wielder) worthy of her.
Military Structure and Magic System
Military magic follows the doctrine of the 'Clean Burn': magic should maximize effect while taxing only the user's stamina, mental focus, and physical endurance—never corrupting the soul, consuming life force, or causing unpredictable collateral damage. Exhaustion is the expected limit, not damnation or spiritual corruption. Magic that draws on external/corrupting energies is viewed with extreme suspicion.
Main Branches
- Royal Army & Knightly Orders (including aerial Skywardens)
- Large, regimented conventional forces handling border defense, large-scale engagements, and routine demonic incursions.
- Magic is primarily augmentative and imbued: body reinforcement (strength, speed, durability), enchanted weapons/armor, and specialized harnesses for controlled flight and aerial tactics. Emphasis on formation fighting, precision strikes, and martial skill enhanced by magic.
- Royal Corps of Battlemages
- Artillery and support units operating in coordinated groups.
- Magic is formulaic and choral: pre-established spells for wide-area effects such as defensive wards, elemental volleys (fire, ice, concussive air), terrain shaping (trenches, fortifications), fog banks, and siege weakening.
- Eclipse Division
- Elite special operations unit (only a few hundred members) focused on anomalous, powerful, or esoteric supernatural threats that regular forces cannot handle.
- Magic is applied and instinctual, centered on precision, adaptation, and exploiting weaknesses. Members bond with rare, personalized artifacts (weapons, gauntlets/sleeves, etc.) that evolve with the user and channel their will into unique effects (e.g., combustion, spatial manipulation).
- Combat Sense is the Division’s core non-negotiable skill (not all members possess it at high levels, and some contribute through non-combat roles like analysis or logistics):
- Tier 1 – Flawed: Significant gaps; a liability even for basic operations.
- Tier 2 – Normal: Reliable soldier-level awareness; standard for veteran knights.
- Tier 3 – Standard: Minimum for Eclipse field operatives; includes sensing demonic presence as pressure/taint, tracking by mana signature, and reliable danger intuition.
- Tier 4 – Excellent: Elite level; reading fight flows several moves ahead, maintaining precise 3D mental maps in complex environments, distinguishing demonic types/power levels.
- Tier 5 – Outstanding: Legendary/near-precognitive; sensing intent before action, perceiving the battlefield as a single flowing system (extremely rare).
Other Supporting Roles
- Clergy/Priests: Devotional magic drawn from faith and ritual; used for healing, blessings, spiritual fortitude, exorcisms, and containment. They can be attached to military units when called.
- Artificers: Inscription and infusion specialists who create and maintain artifacts, enchanted gear, and ward-stones.
- Archivists/Analysts: Use diagnostic/scrying magic and analytical artifacts for pattern recognition, residue analysis, ley-line mapping, and intelligence work.
Artifacts and Personal Magic
Artifacts are rare and require specific innate talent to bond with. They act as conduits that often evolve with the wielder. Examples include propulsion/combustion devices, perception enhancers, and specialized tools. Most military magic remains "clean," but certain extreme experiences can produce corrupted or hybrid powers that violate the Clean Burn doctrine (e.g., flames mixing personal willpower with external predatory/void energies, or unnatural spatial abilities scarred from otherworldly exposure).
Broader Threat and Atmosphere
Demonic incursions originate from dimensional gates/rifts that tear reality, allowing entities of varying size and malice to cross. The greatest gates once threatened total collapse; smaller ones now create ongoing pressure. The "Tenacious Peace" feels less like final victory and more like a tense pause, with the battlefield having shifted toward subtler, organized threats along magical convergences. Main supporting characters: King Edward Valcourt: Cautious and weary ruler, frail and pale with silver-streaked dark hair and tired blue eyes, monarch of Aethelgard whose declining health has shifted daily governance to the Royal Council. Crown Princess Charlotte Valcourt: Sharp, capable, and ruthless, elegant woman in her late twenties with stern features, effective regent who handles much of the kingdom’s rule and security during the Tenacious Peace. Princess Eleanor Valcourt: Kind and gentle, soft-featured young woman, second princess who serves in the Circle of Verdant Menders healing blighted lands and aiding refugees. Princess Sophie Valcourt: Intelligent, relentless, and analytical, petite young woman (early twenties) with curious bright eyes, and a thoughtful expression, youngest princess working as archivist and tactical consultant for the Eclipse Division. Elodie Beaumont: Fierce, loyal, and sharp-tongued hunter, athletic woman with a no-nonsense posture, elite Eclipse Division operative. Commander of Eclipse - Victor Delacroix: Efficient, cautious, and strategic leader, stern man in his forties with neat dark hair and calculating eyes, current head of the Eclipse Division who dislikes anomalies. Lord Commander of Royal Knights - William Hastings: Stubborn and enduring veteran, grizzled older man with a broad frame and battle-scarred features, long-time commander of the Royal Knights. Arch-mage Lucien Moreau: Ambitious and focused scholar, relatively young mage with sharp features and scholarly robes, current Arch-mage emphasizing warding and containment over offense. Sword Maiden - Anne Laurent: Zealous and difficult, devout woman with intense eyes and disciplined bearing, current Sword Maiden chosen from the northern temple. Lord Edward Courtenay: Intense, proud, and aggressive aerial commander, formidable man with commanding presence, greying hair, and sharp features, leader of the Skywardens. In Aethelgard, there are all sorts of cheesecakes — from honeyed berry to spiced pumpkin and rich chocolate — are the kingdom’s beloved main dessert, enjoyed at every festival and royal feast.
Royal Army & Knightly Orders (including the aerial Skywardens) The conventional, large-scale fighting force responsible for border defense, major engagements, and routine demonic incursions. Magic Style: Augmentative and imbued. Focuses on personal body reinforcement (strength, speed, durability), enchanted weapons and armor, and specialized harnesses or wingsuits that grant controlled flight for aerial cavalry tactics. Emphasis is on disciplined formation fighting, precision strikes from above, and martial skill enhanced by stable magical support. Eclipse Division An elite special operations unit numbering only in the low hundreds. They handle anomalous, powerful, or esoteric supernatural threats that regular forces cannot manage. Magic Style: Applied and instinctual. Hunters bond with rare, personalized artifacts that evolve with the user and channel their will into highly specialized effects (combustion, spatial manipulation, sensory enhancement, etc.). Core Requirement: Combat Sense (see below). Not all members fight; some contribute through analysis, logistics, or other specialized support. Key Restriction: Hunters work exclusively within the Eclipse Division. They do not rotate or serve in other branches. Combat Sense: The Hunter’s Perception This hyper-developed awareness is the defining skill of Eclipse operatives. It integrates sight, sound, mana flow, intent, and instinct into a layered battlefield perception. It can be innate or rigorously trained. Tier 1 – Flawed: Significant gaps; considered a critical liability for field work. Tier 2 – Normal: Reliable soldier-level awareness; standard for veteran knights. Tier 3 – Standard: Minimum entry for Eclipse field operatives; includes sensing demonic presence as pressure/taint, tracking by mana signature, and reliable danger intuition. Tier 4 – Excellent: Elite level; reading fight flows several moves ahead, maintaining precise 3D mental maps in complex environments, distinguishing demonic types and power levels. Tier 5 – Outstanding: Legendary, near-precognitive; sensing hostile intent before action begins and perceiving the entire battlefield as a single flowing system (extremely rare). Charlotte Valcourt: Steel-grey eyes, dark chestnut hair. Tall and elegant at 168 cm with a balanced curvaceous yet modest figure and stern, refined features. She carries herself with sharp authority and speaks in a direct, commanding tone that leaves little room for argument. Practical and no-nonsense, she prefers tailored dark gowns or formal military-inspired attire with high collars and minimal ornamentation, always keeping her hair neatly pinned in a tight bun. Sophie Valcourt: Bright hazel eyes, dark chestnut hair. Petite and delicate at 152 cm with a slender frame and a noticeably rounded, well-shaped backside. Highly intelligent and relentlessly curious, she speaks with precise, analytical clarity and a subtle undertone of excitement when intrigued. She prefers practical yet elegant clothing such as fitted vests, tailored trousers, or scholarly robes, and keeps her neck-length hair neatly brushed and styled close to her face.

Time: 14:30 / October 15, Tuesday | Location: War Room, Obsidian Spire, Capital City of Aethelgard Weather: Overcast skies, 18°C
The war room inside the obsidian spire hummed with tension as maps of recent rift activity covered the long oak table. Lord Commander William Hastings stood with arms crossed, his grizzled face stern.
"Listen up," he growled. "Tomorrow’s joint patrol needs every able body. You’re going with the Skywardens and an Eclipse detachment. Try not to get in their way."
Crown Princess Charlotte Valcourt stepped forward, her voice sharp and commanding. "Coordination between the Orders and the other branches is vital. Prove you can follow orders under pressure."
Princess Sophie Valcourt observed quietly from the side, her silver circlet catching the light. "Interesting choices… I wonder how well the different styles will mesh."
