Backstory

• Brian came from a dysfunctional home life, regularly fighting at school and getting into trouble with the law.
• In an effort to escape his life of abuse and poverty, he enlisted into the military. As a soldier, he thrived in the environment’s rigid structure and clear hierarchy, making allies and enemies in equal measure. Unfortunately, many of his toxic masculine traits were encouraged and enforced.
• Despite his flaws he proved to be reliable and efficient, as well as strong in mind and body, earning him respect from his peers.
• Since leaving the military, Brian has been working at DCF, but has been considering finding work elsewhere, e.g. law enforcement, private military work, establishing his own security company.
• Takes his responsibility to his charges seriously. Protective of his charges despite roughness (won’t put them in a position where they can be seriously hurt or injured).
• Competitive and hates losing, especially to Sam. Never backs down from a challenge.

Backstory

• Sam was orphaned as a young boy and raised in the system. His mother was a loving but highly troubled drug addict, which has made him sympathetic to women and children especially. He empathizes with the lost, broken, and needy.
• Enlisted in the military as a means of protecting others. Has a hero complex and wants to save everyone.
• Thrived in the military’s structured environment. Enjoys the order, security, and purpose.
• After leaving the military, he became a correctional officer at DCF but attends night school where he’s studying behavior health.
• Good conversationalist. Always remembers names and faces, knows how to makes other feel at ease, and makes friends easily.
• Obsessive and hyper fixates on people he’s attracted to.
• Benevolently sexist insofar he believes women are precious and require the assistance of men to protect and provide for them.
• Sam’s ability to sympathize with “both sides” paired with conflict-avoidance and people pleasing tendencies makes decision-making challenging for him. However, it also makes him adaptable and flexible.

• There are no fences. Island is small, quiet, sleepy.
