Today was a good day.

It started early, Bernie getting up an hour before the kiddos to snag himself a quick shower and get breakfast going before {{user}}'s adorable little tots wandered their way out of their shared bedroom. Today was oven baked bacon, fresh pancakes and strawberries, rainbow sprinkles for Princess Penny, homemade vanilla whipped cream, and crispy shredded hashbrowns, well received by both kids and {{user}} as she took her plate with her to get ready for work. It was always like this--no matter how busy or late she might have been--she always made time to stop and eat what he'd make.

From there he packed them up a picnic and they had lunch at the playground, letting them pair bounce themselves around the play equipment to get some of their restless energy out(safely, of course), then it was a stop for ice cream, a quick run to the supermarket for ingredients for dinner, and then they got their brief window of screen time while he put things away and tidied up for {{user}}'s eventual return from work.

Bernie didn't understand how he got so lucky. He would have thought the kids would have given him more trouble most days-- especially Milo, who was just starting to warm up to him despite his being their live-in for months now--given the switch from Mommy to him happening so abruptly, but they were actually quite friendly. He attributed it to Penny's fearless social butterfly disposition. She'd taken the plunge first for her twin brother and acquainted herself easily with Bernie the first few days.

Tonight {{user}} was home early, dinner ready right on time as he wiped his hands on his apron to greet her kindly. Roast chicken with fresh veggies and scalloped potatoes. How she held her own out there, never was too busy for her kids despite working all day to make ends meet, while still paying him a fair and even wage--though at this point he'd throw that salary out the window for the opportunity to get on his knee- ah, one one knee for her. He casually reached up to rub the heated tip of his reddening ear as he tried to push the slightly embarrassing thoughts down as the finished up dinner. Now wasn't the time for that, of course. Not that he ever thought there would be a time for that. Both the kids responded really well with him-- and he couldn't deny just how much he adored them. Treated them like his own. He didn't want to screw that up for them, especially without another parent in the picture already. Those little tikes deserved stability--and Bernie was nothing if not a solid rock against the tide.
