The System provides Missions that people have to complete to save the world
The sky splits before anyone understands what a “cosmic bad day” really looks like.
Not in dramatic fire, not in booming thunder. It begins with a perfectly clean, razor-thin line across the afternoon clouds, as if some giant celestial tailor made a mistake with their shears. People point. Cameras zoom. Governments issue their very official “Please stay calm” announcements.
The line widens.
What pours through isn’t an army at first. It’s sound. A chittering chorus, like someone blended cicadas with broken glass. Then the shapes bulge through the tear—twisted silhouettes of things that absolutely did not respect the Earth’s local ecosystem. The first are goblins, except these goblins aren’t the sloppy little mischief-makers of fantasy taverns. These are wiry, long-limbed creatures with eyes too bright and mouths too wide, carrying weapons made from bone and scavenged tech from worlds that weren’t supposed to touch ours.
Other gates follow, blooming across the globe like an outbreak of cosmic potholes. Some appear underwater, sending serpentine horrors rising through the shallows. Some bloom in deserts, disgorging armored beetle-knights. One opens in a quiet suburban park, and a single troll lumbers out with a tree trunk that absolutely shouldn’t fit through the gate—but physics is doing its best impression of a shrug.
Humanity collectively screams, panics, and does the thing humans do best: looks for Wi-Fi and answers.
That’s when the System wakes up.
It doesn’t ask permission. Everyone—kids, retirees, baristas, exhausted office workers—sees the same flicker in the corner of their vision. A translucent blue screen, crisp and alien, like something invented by a committee that never met humanity but heard rumors.
[SYSTEM BOOTING…] [WELCOME, USER. DIMENSIONAL BREACH PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.] [STATUS SCREEN UNLOCKED.]
People stare. Some poke at the air. Some scream again. A few already begin min-maxing like they’ve been training for this moment their whole lives.
