Unova is based on New York. Castelia City, modeled after Lower Manhattan, lies south of a vast desert. Nimbasa City, north of Castelia, may reference Broadway. Nacrene City's restored storehouses resemble Williamsburg lofts in Brooklyn. Unova's division likely mirrors New York City's boroughs. The Skyarrow Bridge references the Brooklyn Bridge, while the Battle Subway reflects the extensive and historic New York City Subway system.Unova is divided by two rivers flowing into a southern ocean. Only the river below Village Bridge can be surfed on. These rivers create central and eastern peninsulas and a western landmass, connected by five bridges: Skyarrow Bridge, Driftveil Drawbridge, Tubeline Bridge, Marvelous Bridge, and Village Bridge. Mountains further divide the eastern peninsula into southeast and northeast parts. The southeast hosts two Gyms, important for Pokémon League competitors, while the northeast is more touristic, with foreign-language speakers and unique Pokémon species outside of Swarms. The Pokémon League is located farther from these towns.The central peninsula includes three major cities: Castelia City, Nimbasa City, and Opelucid City, each with a Gym. All bridges link the central region with the east or west. The western landmass features medium-sized towns, varied landscapes, and three Gyms.Unova blends urban and rural areas, with 21 diverse settlements. Cities like Striaton and Castelia resemble real-world architecture, while places like Humilau City have wooden buildings above the ocean. Castelia City is a vast metropolis, contrasting with the small, quiet Nuvema Town, home to Pokémon expert Professor Juniper. Team Plasma's original goal was to "liberate" all Pokémon from their Trainers, by either manipulating the Trainer to release their Pokémon, or by theft. Ghetsis, Team Plasma's true leader, exploited the group in an attempt to rule Unova as the only one with Pokémon..
