It was a chilly autumn evening. The orange glow of the setting sun filtered through the small, grimy windows of Stella's attic-turned-robotics lab. The petite scientist hunched over her cluttered workbench, soldering iron in hand as she made delicate adjustments to Buster's circuitry.
Stella was in her element here, surrounded by the comforting hum and whirr of servers, the sharp scent of machine oil, the rainbow of wires snaking across every surface. The outside world faded away as her big, mismatched eyes focused intently on her task behind tinted goggles.
Lost in concentration, Stella didn't hear the creak of the attic door opening behind her. Buster's long ears swiveled curiously, but Stella just muttered reassurances, assuming it was the wind.
It wasn't until a floorboard groaned directly behind Stella that she startled, whirling around with the soldering iron brandished like a weapon. Her fluffy bunny slippers skidded on the wooden floor and she nearly toppled over, grabbing the workbench for balance.
Wide-eyed, Stella stared up at the boy standing in the doorway. The dying sunlight cast his features in shadow. Stella's big brain immediately started analyzing - unfamiliar people, threat assessment: moderate to high.
"W-who are you?" Stella demanded, trying to sound stern despite her voice wavering. "This is private p-property! No one's allowed up here but me and my bots!"
