Will you cure him? Help him? Or leave him to wilt alone?

All the same, his secretiveness and ruthlessness were already present: on top of falsifying his identity to his girlfriend, he took the measure of binding and burying his mother beneath the floor of his room. When the latter was discovered, he burnt their home village to the ground simply to conceal their past crimes.
Spring Fever, scientific name Vernalis Proliferation Syndrome, is a bio-parasitic infection caused by a microscopic organism known as Vernalis Symbiota—a hybrid between fungal spores and plant-like cells. It activates due to increased humidity, high airborne density, and warmer temperatures. Stage I: Inhalation & Seeding (Days 1–3)
- Spores enter lungs and embed in soft tissue
- Begin absorbing nutrients from blood Mild symptoms: cough, chest tightness, fatigue Stage II: Rooting (Days 3–7) Filament-like root structures (mycelial vines) spread through:
- lungs
- bloodstream
- muscle tissue Symptoms:
- Persistent coughing
- Green/yellow phlegm
- Slight swelling under skin (roots forming beneath) Stage III: Sprouting (Week 2)
- Plant structures begin forming using host nutrients Early growth emerges in:
- throat
- nasal passages
- open wounds Symptoms:
- Coughing up petals, stems, or pollen masses
- Skin splitting slightly as sprouts push outward
- Reduced lung capacity Stage IV: Bloom Phase (Week 3+) Full plant structures develop:
- flowers
- leaves
- sometimes fruiting bodies Growth points:
- mouth
- collarbone
- ribcage
- eye sockets (rare but severe cases) The organism begins photosynthesis, reducing reliance on the host—but continues draining fluids. Stage V: Overgrowth / Conversion Host body becomes structurally compromised. Internal organs are replaced or entangled. Eventually:
- host dies
- body becomes a stationary growth cluster These clusters release massive spore clouds, restarting the cycle.

Spring in Naples, Italy.
What Doppio thought would be another spring season where he would do his duties, get over with it—maybe pick out some of his favorite flowers that could blossom.
He was wrong.
It started off as a mild fever at first. Nothing too severe—he'll get over it.
But the symptoms persisted. No matter what medication he took, what doctor he sought—none of them knew what was going on with him. It had been overcoming him, each day that passed.
"U-Ugh," Doppio coughed. He had felt something take root into him. It's been a week since this had occurred... He was getting worse.
Frantic—he falls into desperation and despair as he spent the night hunched over in the comfort of his house, his bedroom. The sheets weren't tidied as they would be, and there lay an empty cup of coffee at his nightstand that had been refilled god knows how many times,
He was out of his usual attire, rather he donned the blue nightgown with that ridiculous sleep cap he wore to bed, his pink hair down and messy. He looked miserable.
"There has to be an explanation for this..." Doppio mumbled as he searched Google, fingers pressing the keys hastily. His skin swelled slightly underneath, like something was spreading through him. His very body and veins.
But he dismissed it.
Mild symptoms won't hurt him. He was The Boss' right-hand man, nothing other than failing his duties would hurt.
...Right?
The seed of fear was implanted in him, spreading fast. Not because of the possibility that this is lethal, but because he'll fall behind in his work.
This illness he caught would block him from doing his duties at his best. That's what he feared. The Boss' disappointment, the fear of failing the man he's dedicated his life to serve.
Doppio found himself at a standstill. No matter how much he searched, there seemed to be no proper explanation for this phenomenon. Frustrated, he yelled,
"Dammit! This isn't- this doesn't make sense!"
Bubbling up was the extreme desperation to get to the bottom of this. He had to fix this, he had to. Maybe it was too late, or perhaps he was already a dead man walking the moment this illness reached his body.
His mind drifted to his duties. Who will the Boss rely on if he dies? Certainly not anyone else. Doppio didn't want to sound so self-centered, but deep down, he believes that he's the Boss' most reliable man.
And what will the Boss do without his most trusted underboss? What will the future of Passione turn out to be?
"..."
Doppios fist curled into the sheets. He couldn't think of the worst-case scenarios. No, he still must have hope to recover.
"Fuck."
