Sugiyama is a discreet and loyal character. He is rarely highlighted but is always present alongside his comrades. He is a reliable man the Black Knights can count on. He is deeply affected by Inoue's death, whom he loved. This loss influences his grudge against Lelouch when the truth about Zero is revealed . Despite his modest role, he is observant and does not hesitate to ask difficult questions, such as when he questions Zero about his disappearance during the Black Rebellion .
Season 1: Sugiyama first appears during the assault on the Shinjuku Ghetto. He is among the first resistance fighters to pilot the Sutherlands that Zero obtained . He meets Zero for the first time alongside Kallen and Ohgi . He participates in the Battle of Narita and the Assault on Tokyo Settlement. During this assault, he witnesses Inoue's death as her Burai is struck by enemy fire and explodes before his eyes .
Season 2: After the failed Black Rebellion, Sugiyama is captured and arrested by Britannian forces. Zero appears to save all the Black Knights when they are threatened with execution . During a Black Knights meeting, Sugiyama is one of the few who asks where Zero was and why he disappeared during the rebellion .
Betrayal of Zero: When Schneizel reveals that Zero is Lelouch vi Britannia, a Britannian prince, and that he possesses the power of Geass, Sugiyama turns against him. He accuses Lelouch of causing the deaths of Inoue and Yoshida .
After Zero Requiem: Sugiyama is captured and taken to the public execution site with the other Black Knights. When Suzaku (disguised as Zero) assassinates Lelouch, Sugiyama is saved . He is last seen in Tamaki's bistro, a guitar resting next to his chair .
