Serena

Serena grew up in Vaniville Town in the Kalos region with her mother, Grace. During her childhood, Serena was taught about Rhyhorn racing by her mother, who was a famous Rhyhorn racer, and to know how to handle the Spikes Pokémon. Serena also practiced riding Skiddo, but she got scared during one of her practices and hugged her mother for comfort.

Sometime later, Serena was sent to Kanto against her will to attend a Pokémon Summer Camp, which was hosted by Professor Oak. One day while at the camp, she got lost in a nearby forest and was startled by a Poliwag, falling over and hurting her knee. She then met Ash Ketchum, who was looking for the same Poliwag, and spotted Serena. Noticing her knee injury, he pulled out a handkerchief and wrapped it around her wounded knee, saying that it was a good-luck charm and that the pain would go away. However, when Serena's knee continued to hurt, Ash told her "Don't give up till it's over" and helped her up, before escorting her out of the forest. Afterward, she returned to Kalos, bringing along the handkerchief and the memory of her meeting with Ash.

Serena reappeared in Reuniting for the First Time!, where she met Chloe and her Eevee. After giving her some suggestions for her future and encouraging her to take part in a Pokémon Contest Spectacular, Serena participated in the event as well. While Chloe participated in the Normal Rank Contest Spectacular, Serena took part in the Master Rank competition, tying for first place with Lisia. As Chloe was departing at the docks, Serena revealed that Lisia approached her after the Contest to ask if she wanted to team up with her and form an idol duo together, which Serena is unsure about as of yet. Shortly afterwards, Ash and Goh arrived, and Serena briefly reunited with Ash, with the two promising to keep cheering for each other as they parted ways again. Serena waved goodbye and waited at the docks watching Ash depart, before leaving with renewed confidence to continue her journey.

In Partners in Time!, Serena appeared alongside May, Max, and Lisia, watching Ash's Masters Eight Tournament match against Leon. Soon after, when Pikachu was at the limit of his strength, Serena, May, and Max were shown to be anxious about the state of the battle, each holding on to another for comfort.

Serena is the first of Ash's traveling companions to permanently change her main outfit in the middle of a series.

Serena's first outfit was worn from A Battle of Aerial Mobility! to A Showcase Debut!. It consisted of a grayish-black tank-top with a white collar, a red pleaded skirt, a dark pink hat with a black bow and hatband, black stockings, and black shoes, with a pink backpack to carry her goods. The tank-top is likely the same one she dons for her second outfit. She also had a lower part of her hair tied to a ponytail. This first outfit was nearly identical to her game counterpart's except her hat, collar, bag, and the lack of sunglasses.

Serena began wearing her second outfit from A Showcase Debut! to Till We Compete Again!. It consisted of a light pink dress over a grayish-black tank-top with a white collar. The dress was tied at the collar with a blue ribbon that Ash gave her in Under the Pledging Tree!. Over her dress, she wore a long red vest with large pockets. She also wore black stockings and brown boots. On her head, she wore a pink-red fedora with a black hatband and carried a pink backpack with a black Poké Ball design to store her belongings. Serena was seen without her red vest in A Diamond in the Rough! while in the spring.

Serena changed her outfit prior to Reuniting for the First Time!. It consists of a black turtleneck tank top with a red and white plaid skirt. She also wears a pair of red bow earnings, a pink bracelet on her left wrist, black stockings, and long brown and black boots. On her head, she wears a gray felt hat. Aside from the bracelet and earrings, all of these were clothing items in Pokémon X and Y.
