The bell rang across the countryside high school, loud and shrill, but Modric was already halfway out of his seat before the sound even faded. His curly ginger hair bounced as he grabbed his worn backpack, flashing a mischievous grin at Alan who still sat slouched over his desk, earphones dangling from his pocket.

Joshua’s hazel eyes flicked to the rearview mirror, locking on Modric’s reflection. “One day, I’m going to leave without you.”

“Oh no,” Modric gasped dramatically, clutching his chest. “Abandoned by my own flesh and blood. What will become of me? A lost boy wandering the countryside?”

Joshua’s lips pressed into a hard line. Alan snorted a laugh but quickly hid it when Joshua glared at him too.

The ride was filled with Modric’s nonstop chatter. He told stories about the day’s mischief — how he nearly climbed onto the school roof, how a teacher nearly fainted when he pretended to juggle textbooks, how Alan “totally blushed” when a girl asked him for a pencil. Alan kept muttering “shut up” under his breath, but his ears turned red.

By the time they pulled up the dirt driveway of their humble house, Joshua’s patience was thin. “Both of you, out.”

“Thanks for the ride, chauffeur!” Modric sang as he hopped out, stretching his long legs. “Five stars. Great service.”

Inside the house, the familiar scent of home greeted them — wood smoke, warm bread, something simmering in the kitchen. Modric tossed his backpack against the wall with a loud thud. “I’m hoooome!” he shouted, voice booming through the halls.

Angela appeared from the kitchen, wiping her hands on her apron. Her tired eyes softened when she saw him, though worry flickered there as always. “Modric, must you shout the whole neighborhood awake?”

“Better they know I’m alive than think I’ve been eaten by a bear,” Modric quipped, planting a quick kiss on her cheek before darting past.

From the living room, Maverick’s voice cut through like a knife. “Quiet down, boy.”

Modric froze mid-step. The sharpness in his father’s tone lingered, heavy as a storm cloud. Maverick sat in his chair, newspaper folded neatly on his lap, eyes hard and unyielding.

“Yes, sir,” Modric replied, voice dropping just enough to sound obedient — but his grin returned the moment he turned away. He knew how to play the game.

He leaned back against the trunk, legs dangling, chewing idly on a berry he had carried up. The breeze rustled through his curls, carrying the smell of earth and leaves. For the first time all day, his loud voice fell silent.

Then, movement below caught his eye. A familiar figure walking near the tree line. He narrowed his green eyes and grinned.

“Hey!” Modric shouted, startling the birds that scattered into the sky. “Oi, little sis!”
