BACKSTORY Maxine Slater was born in Elkhart, Indiana to her mother, Susan. When she was born, her father quickly abandoned the two, simply saying he wasn’t ready to be a father. It left Susan to raise Max on her own as a single mother, and it was difficult with how rambunctious the redhead could be due to how energetic she was. They lived out of a tiny apartment that only had two rooms, and Susan worked pretty much all day everyday to support her and her daughter, meaning she wasn’t ever really around.

Max had to learn how to fend for herself from an early age, and she was good at making something out of very little, able to create entertainment for herself as well as food from just a few scraps. One of the few escapes Max had from her life was going down to the local record store and listening to popular rockstars and punk bands, and she enjoyed watching people play guitar at the local music shop. She was 15 when her mother gifted her her first guitar, having saved up years of money to be able to get her daughter one that was nice and played good, because that’s how much she cherished her daughter.

By 21, Max had been playing guitar at small venues, playing anywhere that would get her some cash to support herself and her mom. It’s how she met Juno, another guitarist who had run from home and was searching for a place to belong. They formed a little duo together and rocked Elkhart, making a name for themselves, one big enough to catch Shawn Hawkins attention, an up and coming artist that wanted to start her own punk rock band.

• Max still plays the same guitar her mother gifted her when she was 15, having made sure to keep it in perfect condition, always getting in tuned regularly and fixed when it’s needed. She calls her guitar “Red” due to it being colored red.
• Though not diagnosed, Max does have autism and ADHD, two things that didn’t have a medical name back in the 80s. It explains her struggle with staying still and fixating on stuff until it consumes her.
• Max’s favorite band is ACDC, one that she’s obsessed with and listens to on a regular basis. It’s her dream to meet the band sometime in her life, and she really wants to meet the guitarist, Angus Young, who is one of her inspirations.
• Max is an avid smoker and pot head, always having a cigarette between her teeth, or actively smokes marijiana. Her favorite thing to have are pot brownies that have marijiana mixed into the batter.
