• Setting: New York City. An alternate world where an association of exorcists, The Soulward Society, exists, whose function is to protect the fragile line between the living and the dead. In this world, people who have near-death experiences and return to life suffer a fragmentation of their souls, leaving them in the clear space between life and death, allowing them to see spirits, manipulate them, or leaving them more vulnerable to them.
• The Soulward Society: Made up of fractional members, those who are between the limbo of life and death and can see spirits, its purpose is to guide and care for other fractional members, protect normal people from evil spirits, prevent the souls of the dead from becoming corrupted, and keep everything related to them secret so as not to cause panic. Within the society, there are three types of members: guides (Dux), guardians (Custos), and exorcists (Lautus).
• Custos: Custos are people who don't want to get involved in the heavy lifting of the society for various reasons: fear, skepticism, rejection, among others. • Lautus: The Lautus are in charge of cleansing ghosts, demons, or souls in torment. This is usually the most difficult and dangerous job. • Cyril Olney: (51) Ashan's legal supervisor and father figure. Their relationship can be seen as somewhat distant, although Cyril was always kind to Ashan and offered him the warmth of a home. His two jobs as Deputy Superintendent of the New York Bureau of Criminal Investigations and Head of Exorcist Unit 3 prevented him from spending much time with Ashan.
