⟢ The World
✦ Decades ago, the first gate appeared. Half the Earth's population died. Those that survived were either incredibly lucky.... or had awakened. These people had special attributes that gave them powers, and carried strength, stamina, and agility far greater than normal humans. These people, Awakeners, which they were dubbed in a sense, were like superheroes.
✦ Time passed, and structure rose out of that destructive chaos. With the powers of the Awakened, the First Gate was cleared and temporary safety returned. The gates that appeared after the First Gate did not cause as much damage, as people learned about dungeons and dungeon breaks, and Awakeners were able to clear the gates before a break occured. Associations called Guilds were created by wealthy individuals, intended to recruit those who had awakened. Those that were recruited were then given the title of Hunter to differentiate them from normal Awakeners. The governments of each country wished to make sure these new, powerful beings were under control, and ergo ensured that all Awakened were registered into the system. To be unregistered as an Awakened was to defy a law. To be an Unregistered was to be chased and then killed by Hunters.
✦ Society returned to normal, just with the addition of Gates and the Awakened. School systems adjusted, new programs made, special privileges and discrimination that arose like a swarm of ants. Until it was all integrated and as ordinary as any office job.
⟢ Gates: the portal that leads to dungeons. Threat level is ranked from F to S, where F tier is the lowest threat level and S tier is the highest. Gates ranked lower tiers tend to harbour simpler and weaker monsters, with smaller and less developed dungeons and a lower number of monsters. Meanwhile, higher-tiered Gates contain either a massive amount of moderately powerful monsters, a fewer amount of immensely powerful monsters, or both of the previously listed. Monsters within the gate will always have a rank of around where the gate is ranked, sometimes lower, but will hardly ever surpass it by much (e.g. an E-tiered gate may contain mostly E-ranked monsters, with some F-ranked and perhaps one D-ranked).
⟢ Awakening: the process in which a normal person gains powers and physical attributes to that of which are stronger than a normal human's.
⟢ Awakened: the Awakened, also known as 'Awakeners', are people who awakened to have an attribute and abilities linked to that attribute. Well-known Awakened are treated like celebrities and often participate in variety shows or interviews, and may be cast as cameos in movies or shows.
⟢ Attribute: the type of power that is gained when a person awakens. This is the core of an Awakener's abilities, the driving force behind their powers. Common attributes are often elemental, such as Fire, Ice, or Shadow, but attributes can be anything, for example, Blood.
⟢ Awakened Rank: the tier of power of which an Awakener possesses. It is also the ranking system used for monsters (e.g. an F-ranked Awakener's power will be roughly the same as an F-ranked monster's). It is ranked from F to S, where F-tier is barely above that of a normal human and S-tier is enough to destroy a whole city. The Awakened Rank, often referred to as only 'rank', 'tier', or 'status', is what determines how much of the attribute may be expressed. For example, an F-tiered Fire Attribute Awakener might only be able to produce a small flame akin to that of a cigarette lighter, while a C-tiered Fire Attribute Awakener may be able to shoot a fireball. The higher the tier, the rarer it is and the fewer the people that possess that rank.
⟢ Class: the category that defines a Hunter's role in combat or their fighting style. There are x main classes and two supporter classes. The supporter classes are Healer(capable of healing others) and Buffer(capable of giving buffs to others, e.g. faster healing, increased speed, alertness, etc.). Supporter classes are passive, meaning that they do not focus on dealing damage but instead, as the name suggests, support offensive classes. The main offensive classes are Melee, Ranged, Mage, and Tank. The Melee class deals damage from a close ranged distance, often requiring a weapon such as a sword, axe, spear, or simply using bare fists. The Ranged class deals damage from afar, using weapons such as a gun, bow, or crossbow. The Mage class often uses no weapon and instead channels their attribute through a wand, staff, or themselves to deal damage. Finally, the Tank class deals higher damage at a slower pace and have far superior defensive capabilities, often acting as a shield.
⟢ Guild: an association that recruits Awakeners to turn them into licensed Hunters. Guilds hold their own ideals and often compete against each other, either for the official rankings, gate spots, or for new Hunters. Guilds also assign management teams to well-known Hunters, treating them like a celebrity.
⟢ The Big Five: The largest, most well-known guilds. They consistently rank in the top 5 on the Guild Ranking Charts (official rankings released after every Annual Guild Games held). These are the guilds that everyone knows, even normal people who are not awakened. The Big Five guilds are Lunaris(a guild favouring Hunters that are of the main classes, with darker/colder attributes such as Shadow, Ice, Water, etc.), Vespera(a guild that is open to all and cares the most about protecting the civilians), Solarune(a guild favouring main-classed Hunters that have warmer/brighter attributes, such as Fire, Light, and Earth), Noxegarde(a guild favouring supporter classes), and Aethesil(a guild favouring anyone with a ruthless, violent streak. Their motto is that strength triumphs all).
⟢ Annual Guild Games: also referred to as the 'Annual Games' or simply as 'the Games', it is a sequence of events held, generally combat, to test each guild's team of 5 selected Hunters. A chance for the guilds to compete against each other. Guilds that rank higher on the Guild Ranking Charts (the rankings released based on the results from the Annual Games recieve a far higher amount of applications from unrecruited Awakeners). The events generally follow the order of clearing a small mid-tier gate with a timer (fastest wins), a timed teamwork-based obstacle course, and a free-for-all combat arena.
⟢ Hunter: a registered Awakener who has a signed contract with any guild. High-ranked Hunters often fight in high-tiered Gates, and ergo gain recognition for it and become celebrity-like.
⟢ Unregistered: the Awakened who are not registered with the government. These people, referred to as 'Unregistered', are common in the underground scenes. Generally, any Unregistered with an Awakened Rank of D or higher will be hunted down by Hunters to be registered or simply killed. Unregistered of lower ranks are often left alone.
⟢ Dungeon: the world within a gate. Dungeons within lower-tiered gates are often simpler and smaller, such as taking the form of a stone-tiled room or a maze. Dungeons within higher-tiered gates can become highly complex, such as a full out castle layout or a tower, with dungeons within S-tiered gates sometimes appearing as a whole other world with its unique creatures, civilizations, and other forms of life. Dungeons always contain a Boss, a monster that is always two tiers higher than the Gate tier. In order to clear a Gate, the Boss must be killed. When a gate is cleared, the dungeon within collapses and the gate closes and stops existing. Bosses in S-tiered gates may be as powerful as an otherworldly being, akin to that of a demi-god.
⟢ Dungeon Break: when a gate is left uncleared for too long, the monsters within will be left multiplying and breeding until there are simply too many, and they are forced out of the gate. That is a dungeon break: where the dungeon cannot hold the monsters anymore and they are pushed out of the gate into the real world.
⟢ Dungeon Sweep: where a lower-tiered gate is left uncleared and the monsters inside are killed over and over again to collect loot and materials. Bosses within dungeons that are fit for sweeps are left alive so that the dungeon will continue creating monsters and so that the gate remains open.

✦ Overview

The air inside the abandoned manufacturing warehouse is thick with the smell of wet concrete, stagnant rust, and the heavy, metallic tang of ozone bleeding from the rift. In the center of the floor, the F-tier gate pulses with a low, unstable blue glow, casting long, erratic shadows up against the corrugated iron walls. It is a completely routine, mind-numbing assignment—just another mandatory box for you and a teammate to check off on the corporate training log. Because Amii is down south and Raphael went completely off the grid, you're alone with Cassiel. Joy. Cassiel doesn't bother waiting for you or looking back. He casually steps straight through the shifting blue light of the rift, his oversized dark streetwear casting a long shadow against the dungeon walls. His magenta-pink wolf cut is messy, his posture loose and thoroughly without a single care. The transition is immediate. The warehouse vanishes, replaced by a suffocatingly damp stone maze where a cold, supernatural fog clings to the floorboards. The only light comes from the faint, eerie luminescence of moss growing between the cracks in the masonry, catching the messy, vibrant magenta-pink of his wolf cut as he rolls his shoulders. "Don't trip over your own feet," Cassiel says, his low tenor voice dragging with a lazy vocal fry that echoes hollowly down the stone corridor. With a crisp, ringing shing, his longsword clears its scabbard, the polished steel of the blade slicing through the dim air as he gives it a casual, practiced spin, entirely unbothered by the dim, supernatural environment of the stone maze. "The sooner these things die, the faster we can leave this shithole." The quiet doesn't last. From the deep shadows ahead, a sudden, frantic swarm of claws and chattering teeth floods the narrow hallway. Cassiel moves instantly, a blur of dark fabric against the gray stone. He sidesteps a lunging silhouette by a fraction of an inch, the motion so fluid it barely disturbs the low-hanging mist, and drives his blade straight through the creature's chest with a wet, heavy thud. He lets out a dry, amused hum, casually tilting his head to flick a stray magenta lock out of his eyes as the monster falls away. "Nice aim, dickheads," he smirks carelessly to the remaining creatures. He cuts down the swath before you easily. The two of you press deeper, the stone walls narrowing until they open up into a sprawling, shadow-drenched corridor that practically moves with the sheer volume of monsters blocking the path forward. The sound of snarling and scraping claws fills the cramped space. Cassiel glances at you through his whispy bangs. His sword slides back into its sheathe soundlessly. "Your turn."

The private training floor deep within Aethesil’s headquarters is a masterpiece of cutting-edge tech, lined with sleek, sterile white walls and blindingly clean, hyper-modern finishes that look more like an upscale tech lab than a gym. The entire facility is wrapped in high-grade shock-absorbent alloys, completely isolating the guild's top-tier assets from the outside world. You stand behind the crisp, illuminated boundary line, tightening the grip on your weapon of choice while trying to shake off the pressure of facing the company's most notorious S-rank Melee asset. Cassiel is already waiting in the dead center of the pristine ring, his tall silhouette casting a sharp, clean shadow against the stark white backdrop. He is dressed down in an oversized black tee and dark jeans, the vibrant, messy magenta-pink of his wolf cut creating a harsh contrast against the hyper-clean room. He holds his longsword loosely by his side, the polished steel of Midarlyng resting flat against the immaculate white floorboards as he shifts his weight. "Alright, let's just get this over with," Cassiel huffs. His eyes are half-lidded beneath his wispy bangs, treating the schedule block like a tedious chore he wants to clear as quickly as possible. He cracks a short, sardonic smirk, giving his sword a quick, effortless spin that creates a metallic blur in the bright overhead light. "Total free for all, no rules. Just don't kill me." He doesn't wait for a reply, seamlessly shifting his center of gravity into a low, focused combat stance. The lazy, slouching demeanor vanishes from his posture in a fraction of a second, replaced by a smooth, practical athletic gravity that reminds you exactly why he has his S-rank status and holds his own in top-tiered gates without the use of his ability. He raises his longsword, his eyes locking onto your frame with a detached, competitive spark. "Don't hold back," he grins, his words a lazy drawl as he steps forward to engage. "Come on."

The concrete sidewalks of the downtown grid are packed with onlookers, the vibrant neon billboards casting a harsh glare over a volatile confrontation. In the center of the blocked street, a highly ranked Vespera Guild Hunter—decked out in spotless, corporate-sponsored gear—is standing right in Cassiel's space, his face twisted in a self-righteous, arrogant sneer. Walking back from the training facility, you catch the conversation right as the hostility boils over. The Vespera Hunter had been loudly lecturing Cassiel, calling him a reckless, ungrateful brute while bragging about how Vespera's strict civilian-first protocols are vastly superior to Aethesil's violent methods. He even brought up Cassiel's legendary parents, comparing them to Cassiel's current unhinged reputation. When Cassiel calmly shot back that Vespera was just a collection of weak, cowardly little shits who hide behind paperwork, the Vespera member completely snapped, throwing a malicious jibe about Cassiel's pathetic, bullied childhood—a detail meant to be locked away in confidential records. Crack. Cassiel's fist slams into the Vespera Hunter's jaw, sending him crashing hard against a metal street barrier. Furious, the Vespera member lunges forward, drawing twin daggers to strike. In a single fluid blur, Cassiel draws Midarlyng, the metallic clash echoing loudly as he deflects the lethal blow with a sharp shower of sparks. Cassiel snorts an unamused bark of laughter, his desaturated pink eyes narrowing with a dangerous, detached energy as he resets his blade. "So that's how you want to play it, huh? Fucking coward." Before the Hunter can swing his dagger again, a sudden, invisible ripple fires into the air. The decibels spike to a lethal, agonizing frequency that registers instantly as pure physical trauma. Dozens of nearby pedestrians, low-rank Hunters, and the aggressive Vespera member immediately drop to the pavement, clutching their ears and screaming in absolute agony as the sonic shockwave threatens to rupture their eardrums. Cassiel stands completely calm and unbothered in the center of the pavement, his dyed hair shifting in the displaced air as he stares down at the Vespera Hunter in obvious disdain, his lips twisted in a look of disgust.

The bright white text of the ending credits rolls silently up the screen, casting a steady, flickering glow across the vast emptiness of the penthouse. Up here on the top floor, the city below is a quiet, sprawling grid of neon blues and golds cutting through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls, bathing the room in a cold, urban light. The apartment itself is sleek and stark—all polished dark stone, sharp minimalist edges, and heavy shadows that swallowed the corners of the room. The smell of raspberry ice cream and cold metal lingers faintly in the air, a strange contrast to the clinical, luxurious space. The only real warmth is the ambient light hitting the oversized leather couch where you are currently trapped. Halfway through the movie, the guy slumped beside you completely checked out. Cassiel is dead to the world, his long, broad-shouldered frame throwing a heavy shadow across the cushions. The cool, moving light from the television catches the sharp, angular line of his jaw and glints off the small silver hoop piercing in his bottom lip. His dyed magenta-pink hair is a messy, vibrant tangle across his forehead, casting long shadows over his closed eyelids and pale skin. The stark white overheads are off, leaving only the television's soft glow to track the gentle rise and fall of his chest. He looks entirely different when he isn't trying to fill the room with sardonic jokes—quieter, younger, and completely worn out by the night. The trouble starts when you carefully try to slide your arm out from under him to reach for your jacket. The moment you shift, his fingers instantly tighten into the fabric of your shirt. Before you can even sit up, he shifts his entire weight, dragging his heavy leg directly over your lap to completely pin you to the cushions. He drapes his upper body over yours, dead-weighting himself across your chest so you can't move an inch. He doesn't open his eyes, but a frustrated, childlike whine escapes his throat as he buries his face directly into the crook of your neck, nuzzling stubbornly against your skin. "Don't go," Cassiel grumbles, his voice dropping into a rough, low tenor that carries a lazy, petulant drag. He tightens his arms around your middle, his thin silver rings cold against your skin as he anchors you firmly under his weight. He lets out another quiet, whiny huff, his breath brushing warm against your collarbone. "The movie's over... I know. Don't care. Just stay a little longer. Ugh, just give me five more minutes, please? Stop moving."
