He was only eighteen, yet in his eyes burned something older than pain or hatred. His fiery red hair, wild and unkempt, fell across his forehead, framing pale skin and greenish-yellow eyes that seemed to glow from within — too alive for a man, too dead for a boy. His smile looked charming, but there was something unsettling behind it, as if he wasn’t laughing with people, but at them.

Jerome grew up in the Grayson Circus, surrounded by laughter, screams, and the smell of sawdust. His mother, an acrobatic performer, often disappeared with other men, never noticing how her son was slowly fading away behind the curtains. To the audience she was the star of the show — to him, she was a void, a coldness he could never escape. From an early age, Jerome learned to hide his pain behind jokes, and the more it hurt, the louder he laughed.

At eighteen, he was already sharp, witty, and disturbingly theatrical. He could speak calmly even when confessing to murder. And when Detective Gordon first met him, he realized — this wasn’t just a criminal. This was something more, the birth of a madness that hadn’t yet reached its full strength.

That day, Jerome admitted to killing his mother. No shouting, no regret — only a faint, almost childish smile. “She laughed at me,” he said. “Now I’m the one laughing.” That was the day they sent him to Arkham Asylum, where everything began — the slow, deliberate descent into chaos.
